MaineDOT Work Plan Calendar Years 2019-2020-2021 February 2019 February 21, 2019 MaineDOT Customers and Partners: On behalf of the 2,000 valued employees of the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT), I am privileged to present this 2019 Edition of our Work Plan for the three Calendar Years 2019, 2020 and 2021. Implementation of this plan allows us to achieve our mission of responsibly providing our customers with the safest and most reliable transportation system possible, given available resources. Like all recent editions, this Work Plan includes all capital projects and programs, maintenance and operations activities, planning initiatives, and administrative functions. This plan contains 2,193 individual work items with a total value of $2.44 billion, consisting principally of work to be delivered or coordinated through MaineDOT, but also including funding and work delivered by other transportation agencies that receive federal funds directly including airports and transit agencies. Although I have the pleasure of presenting this plan, it is really the product of staff efforts dating back to the summer of last year.

  • Chapter 3 Bath's Historical and Geographical Setting
    CHAPTER 3 BATH’S HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL SETTING INTRODUCTION Shaped by historical and geological events, Bath, Maine is a slim needle of a city, pulled north and south along the western bank of the Kennebec River. This needle—about 5 miles long and 1 mile wide—formed of homes, farms, businesses and industries has sewn the inhabitants of Bath into centuries of American history with the threads of the many ships built here. This chapter examines the historical and geographical setting of the City of Ships. But any examination of this history that numbers so few pages cannot possibly present all the important events, individuals and groups. The following provides illustrative examples and aspects, but does not do justice to the rich history of this community and those that have peopled it. THE GEOLOGIC SETTING OF THE CITY Bath’s suitability as a shipbuilding port was, in a sense, created by the ancient geologic forces that molded the entire east coast of the United States. The folding, faulting, and crumpling of the earth’s crust formed the Appalachian Mountains and its associated chains. Two-hundred million years of uplift and river erosion, followed by two-million years of glacial erosion, shaped the New England landscape. During the glacial epoch the weight of the ice depressed the crust, allowing flooding of the valleys upon the melting of the glacial ice. The valleys of the drowned coastline became bays and inlets; the higher ridges producing the peninsulas and islands of the midcoast region. Through eons the geologic landscape evolved into local topography that encouraged our maritime industry.

    History of Sagadahoc County: Nine Towns and One City The long and rich history of Sagadahoc County and its ten communities, a history still portrayed in current structures, road patterns and land uses, is the focus of the Sagadahoc History and Genealogy Room’s collecting mission. 1858 Sagadahoc County Map. Sagadahoc County Following the melting of the last ice sheet, about 12,000 years ago, the area we now know as Sagadahoc County was inhabited by various Native American tribes generally called the Abenaki. Then, in the early 17th Century, European explorers, most notably Samuel de Champlain, sailed the coast of “Maine” and began to map it in detail, including the major bays and estuaries, such as the Kennebec River, then known by various names (e.g., Sagadahoc). Initially part of York County, the area now known as Sagadahoc County became part of Lincoln County in 1760 and then its own county in 1854, thirty-four years after Maine became a state in 1820. City of Bath Population: 8,020 in 1850; 8,514 in 2010 Bath, along with the West Bath area, became its own town in 1781, shortly after separating from Georgetown as the Second Parish. Then, in 1847 Bath became a city, three years after West Bath became an independent municipality. In 1854, with the establishment of Sagadahoc County, Bath became the County Seat.

As determined during this months-long process, this Work Plan reflects three focus areas: safety, innovation, and downtown improvements. First and foremost, safety continues to be the top priority in all MaineDOT activities.
