State of Rhode Island General Assembly 2002 -- S 2559 ======= LC02376 ======= STATE OF RHODE ISLAND IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2002 ____________ S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N CONGRATULATING THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS FOR THEIR SUPER BOWL VICTORY Introduced By: Senators Celona, Irons, Alves, Paiva-Weed, and Walaska Date Introduced: February 05, 2002 Referred To: Senate read and passed 1 WHEREAS, Dreams do come true. David slays Goliath again. The New England 2 Patriots, a team no prognosticator predicted would make the playoffs and the second biggest 3 underdog in Super Bowl history, stunned the sports world and defeated the heavily favored St. 4 Louis Rams 20-17 in a thrilling game; and 5 WHEREAS, The Patriots have had so many heroes this season, it's hard to decide where 6 to begin when listing this team's accomplishments. There is the defense, a unit that combined a 7 fierce run-stopping linebacker corps with a devastating pass rushing defensive line along with a 8 secondary that covered receivers like glue; and 9 WHEREAS, There was the leadership of Tom Brady leading the Patriots all season to 10 improbable win after win. Once again, when the chips were down, Brady leads New England on a 11 clutch drive late in the game to set up a game winning field goal; and 12 WHEREAS, New England's special teams play has been amongst the best in the League 13 all season. From Troy Brown's numerous returns for touchdowns or to set up scores, to Adam 14 Vinatieri's numerous clutch kicks to win games or keep New England alive in games, special 15 teams play has often been the difference between winning and losing all season for New England; 16 and 17 WHEREAS, Adam Vinatieri's dramatic 48-yard field goal to win the Super Bowl has 18 guaranteed a lifetime of treasured memories for New England Patriots' fans. From Troy Brown's 19 countless spectacular catches at wide receiver, to Willie McGinest chasing down yet another 20 opposing team's quarterback, to Drew Bledsoe's unselfish attitude and play as a back-up 1 quarterback, to Ty Law's spectacular coverage play at cornerback, this New England Patriots 2 Team will never be forgotten by their fans; and 3 WHEREAS, One cannot talk about this Patriots team and their miracle season without 4 mentioning the superb coaching and leadership they got from Head Coach Bill Belichick and his 5 outstanding staff. All season long from training camp to the Super Bowl, Belichick has been 6 preaching "team first, individual second." Perhaps nothing illustrated the unity of this Patriots' 7 team better than when they chose to eschew the traditional individual player introductions at the 8 Super Bowl and instead enter the stadium and be introduced as a team; now, therefore, be it 9 RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations 10 hereby congratulates the New England Patriots for their Super Bowl victory and thanks them for 11 giving New England residents and Patriots fans memories to cherish for a lifetime; and be it 12 further 13 RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to 14 transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the New England Patriots' owner Robert Kraft. ======= LC02376 ======= 2 .
