  • 264 Julian Strube Until Quite Recently “Nazi Occultism”
264 book reviews Julian Strube Vril: Eine okkulte Urkraft in Theosophie und esoterischen Neonazismus, München: Wilhelm Fink 2013. 222 pp. isbn: 978-3-7705-5515-4. Until quite recently “Nazi occultism” has mainly been a topic confined to spec- tacular crypto-or pseudo-history and popular fiction, while serious scholarly research has been, to say the least, scarce. Almost 30 years after Goodrick- Clarke’s seminal The Occult Roots of Nazism it seems that academia is slowly beginning to acknowledge this as a field worthy of exploration. This is not because of its historical qualities—as the concept per se is highly question- able—but with regard to the substantial impact it has had on post-war popular culture and right-wing political movements, thereby also on collective memo- ries of the Nazi era. In fact, many—if not most—popular narratives of “Nazi occultism” are founded on dubious revisionist concepts of history, not only by falsifying and/or distorting well-documented historical facts. Although not revisionist in the sense of Holocaust deniers, several of them are certainly triv- ializing the Nazi crimes and racist ideology in an ethically highly questionable way by “explaining” this as basically being the evil deeds of black magicians. Consequently, the victims are reduced to commodities, mere objects used in human sacrifice, thus once again dehumanized and bereft of their dignity. The lack of serious scholarly attention has certainly contributed to the success of this Nazi exploitation genre, as one of its main arguments is precisely that academia is neglecting the occult aspects of Nazi Germany.

  • The Coming Race
Edward Bulwer-Lytton The Coming Race Edward Bulwer-Lytton The Coming Race INSCRIBED TO MAX MÜLLER IN TRIBUTE OF RESPECT AND ADMIRATION CHAPTER I. I am a native of ——, in the United States of America. My ancestors migrated from England in the reign of Charles II.; and my grandfather was not undis- tinguished in the War of Independence. My family, therefore, enjoyed a somewhat high social position in right of birth; and being also opulent, they were con- sidered disqualified for the public service. My father once ran for Congress, but was signally defeated by his tailor. After that event he interfered little in politics, and lived much in his library. I was the eldest of three sons, and sent at the age of sixteen to the old coun- try, partly to complete my literary education, partly to commence my commercial training in a mercantile firm at Liverpool. My father died shortly after I was twenty-one; and being left well off, and having a taste for travel and adventure, I resigned, for a time, all pur- suit of the almighty dollar, and became a desultory wanderer over the face of the earth. In the year 18—, happening to be in ——, I was invited by a professional engineer, with whom I had — 6 — made acquaintance, to visit the recesses of the —— mine, upon which he was employed. The reader will understand, ere he close this nar- rative, my reason for concealing all clue to the dis- trict of which I write, and will perhaps thank me for refraining from any description that may tend to its discovery.

(His name as assigned at birth was Edward George Earle Bulwer.) The Reverend William Emerson, pastor of the 1st Church of Boston, attended the Election Day sermon of another reverend and then dined with the governor of Massachusetts. When he returned to his parsonage he was informed of the women’s business of that day: his wife Ruth Haskins Emerson had been giving birth in Boston and the apparently healthy infant had been a manchild. The baby would be christened Ralph, after a remote uncle, and Waldo, after a family into which the Emerson family had married in the 17th century.1 (That family had been so named because it had originated with some Waldensians who had become London merchants — but in the current religious preoccupations of the Emerson family there was no trace remaining of the tradition of that Waldensianism.) Modern Theosophy by Claude Falls Wright Modern Theosophy An Outline of Its Principles by Claude Falls Wright, FTS Published in 1894 This work was originally written for a well-known publishing house in New York. Prolonged delays in issuing the work and the eventual assignment of the house forced the author to withdraw the manuscript. It is now issued with some slight additions. February 1894 - Claude Falls Wright CLAUDE FALLS WRIGHT last visited Toronto in August, 1922. He was called in the January following to Nicaragua on a business trip, and left with the expectation of returning within a short time. He left his personal effects in his New York lodgings, and after his death by accidental drowning, as no one claimed his property and time passed on, his landlady sold what there was for the rent due. Among these effects were many books and manuscripts. The story of their dispersion may be told another time, but we are only concerned with Mr. Wright's book, Modern Theosophy. It was published in 1894, or attempted to be published, but only a few copies comparatively got into circulation. Most of them were destroyed in a fire. Mr. Wright had every intention of republishing the book with revisions, and we talked it over with him on his last visit to Toronto. Mr. Roy Mitchell, who was naturally interested in the sale of Mr. Wright's books and papers, when he heard where they were being disposed of, went and examined them and was fortunate enough to find a ragged old book with a cover pasted over it with the title "Gupta Vidya" taken from another volume.

It is therefore unnecessary to add more fantasies to the genuine historical facts in the field of Nazi occultism, especially when it comes to their weird expeditions and their pseudo-scientific researches. The true amateur of sensational and strange stories can still be fully satisfied with Himmler's Witch Project, or the Hollow Earth Theory, or the various moons of the World Ice Theory that fell on our planet and drowned the Atlanteans. This is real history and some high-ranking Nazis did believe in these theories, no matter how sensational they may sound to modern ears. It does not add anything to the uncanny spell of such stories to pollute them with material that cannot be verified or, even worse, with pure lies coming straight out of the imagination of poor authors in search of quick money and fame.
