Candace Ming Prof. Besser 4/19/11 Handling Complex Media The Legend of Zelda: Hey Listen! This Needs to be Preserved! I. The Legend of Zelda (1987) In 1985 Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) to the American market. The Legend of Zelda was released in 1987 and has since become one of the most popular series of all time. Taking its cue from the early VCS Adventure game the first Legend of Zelda was a side-scrolling platformer that allowed players to explore an environment and then move off-screen to another environment. The player controlled a boy named Link who must collect the pieces of an object known as the Triforce in order to save Princess Zelda. The game uses a simple controller layout consisting of a directional pad (or d-pad) and an A and B button. The Start button allowed players to pause the game. The Select button showed the players inventory. The gameplay consisted of moving Link around a series of environments, encountering enemies, and solving dungeon puzzles. Link is armed only with a sword at first, but more weapons are available as the game progresses. Once Link recovers all the pieces of the Triforce he faces the final boss and in defeating him saves Hyrule. The game difficulty increases as Link finds more dungeons: enemies become more difficult to kill and puzzles become harder. If Link dies he is returned to the point he starts in the game, or if in a dungeon, the start of the dungeon. Depending on the players skill the game can take several hours or days to complete.

Game Review | The Legend of Zelda file:///Users/denadebry/Desktop/HPSresearch/PapersFromGreen... Matt Waddell STS 145: Game Review Table of Contents: Da Game Story Line & Game-play Technical Stuff Game Design Success Endnotes In 1984 President Hiroshi Yamauchi asked apprentice game designer Sigeru Miyamoto to oversee R&D4, a new research and development team for Nintendo Co., Ltd. Miyamoto's group, Joho Kaihatsu, had one assignment: "to come up with the most imaginative video games ever." 1 On February 21, 1986, Nintendo Co., Ltd. published The Legend of Zelda (hereafter abbreviated LoZ) for the Famicom in Japan. It was Miyamoto's first autonomous attempt at game design. In July 1987, Nintendo of America published LoZ for the Nintendo Entertainment System in the United States, this time with a shiny gold cartridge. Origins: where did LoZ come from? Miyamoto admits that LoZ is partly based on Ridley Scott's movie Legend. Indeed, Miyamoto's video game shares more than just a title with Scott's 1985 production. But Miyamoto's fundamental inspiration for LoZ remains his childhood home, with its maze of rooms, sliding shoji screens, and "hallways, from which there seemed to be a medieval castle's supply of hidden rooms." 2 Story Line: a brief synopsis. In the land of Hyrule, the legend of the "Triforce" was being passed down from generation to generation; golden triangles possessing mystical powers. One day, an evil army attacked Hyrule and stole the Triforce of Power. This army was led by Gannon, the powerful Prince of Darkness. Fearing his wicked rule, Zelda, the princess of Hyrule, split the remaining Triforce of Wisdom into eight fragments and hid them throughout the land.

  • Case History: Historical Perspective on the Legend of Zelda
Case History: Historical Perspective on The Legend of Zelda By Sean Sylvis Professor Lowood STS 145: History of Computer Game Design Introduction The Legend of Zelda, arguably the most popular series of adventure games for any gaming system, includes eight games on four consoles (three on the Game Boy (Color)) and spans a period of 15 years, with another installment going to be released for Nintendo’s next console, the Gamecube. My focus in this paper, a historical perspective on the development of the Legend of Zelda series, will focus on three of those games, The Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), A Link to the Past for the Super NES (SNES), and Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64 (N64). Nearly every game in the Legend of Zelda series has some elements that qualifies it as a Legend of Zelda game: the hero is a young elf-boy named Link who is trying to save his princess Zelda from the clutches of the evil villain, Ganon, who Link must vanquish to finish the game. In order to defeat Ganon, Link has to collect several pieces of the Triforce, which are scattered throughout Hyrule, the virtual world of the Zelda games. There are a few exceptions to these rules, such as Majora’s Mask for the Nintendo 64, but the game play always follows a couple of rules. You can expect the environment to be expansive and immersive, taking many days to explore for the latest Zelda game. There will also be many sub-adventures, or mini-quests, in addition to the primary task of rescuing Zelda, which must be completed before confronting Ganon.

  • (Re-)Balancing the Triforce: Gender Representation and Androgynous Masculinity in the Legend of Zelda Series
ISSN: 1795-6889 www.humantechnology.jyu.fi Volume 15(3), November 2019, 367–389 (RE-)BALANCING THE TRIFORCE: GENDER REPRESENTATION AND ANDROGYNOUS MASCULINITY IN THE LEGEND OF ZELDA SERIES Sarah M. Stang York University Canada Abstract: The Legend of Zelda series is one of the most beloved and acclaimed Japanese video game franchises in the world. The series’ protagonist is an androgynous male character, though recent conversations between Nintendo and players have focused on gender representation in the newest title in the series, Breath of the Wild. Considering these discussions, this article provides an analysis of Link, the protagonist and player character of The Legend of Zelda series. This analysis includes a discussion of the character’s androgynous design, its historical context, official Nintendo paratextual material, developer interviews, and commentary from fans and critics of the series. As an iconic androgynous character in an incredibly successful and popular video game series, Link is an important case study for gender-based game scholarship, and the controversies surrounding his design highlight a cultural moment in which gender representation in the series became a central topic of discussion among players and developers. Keywords: video games, feminism, gender, Legend of Zelda, Nintendo, androgyny. ©2019 Sarah M. DigiPen Institute of Technology 1 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Book Report The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ======================================= Game Title: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Platform: Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, iQue Player, Virtual Console Genre: Action-adventure Release Date: November 21, 1998 Developer: Nintendo EAD Publisher: Nintendo Designer(s): Eji Aonuma, Yoshiaki Koizumi By: Justin Biller Overview The game begins when Navi, a fairy, awakens Link from his sleep. Link was having a nightmare which was foreshadowing his encounter with the main villain Ganondorf. Navi then brings Link to meet with the leader of the Kokiris, the Great Deku Tree. Link saves the Great Deku Tree from a curse (placed on him by Ganondorf), and receives a spiritual stone known as the Kokiri’s Emerald. He is then sent to Hyrule Castle to speak with Princess Zelda. Link meets with Zelda, who has been having dreams about Hyrule’s future as well as Link’s arrival. She reveals that Ganondorf is attempting to obtain the Triforce, a holy relic of great power. Zelda requests that Link obtain all three spiritual stones so they can enter the Sacred Realm and claim the Triforce before Ganondorf can. Link then obtains the Goron’s Ruby from the Darunia as a reward for slaying King Dodongo, and obtains the Zora’s Sapphire as a reward for rescuing the Zora Princess from inside the stomach of a massive whale. Link then returns to the castle, where Ganondorf is seen chasing Zelda from the castle. Zelda throws Link the Ocarina of Time, and telepathically teaches him the ‘Song of Time’.
