Interesting Novella in the Ring of Fire SeriesBy D. G. HulanThis is a novella in the 163x universe. It actually begins a few hours before the Ring of Fire occurs, and a party of three fleeing the sack of Magdeburg are near the border where part of Thuringia is replaced by Grantville and some of its environs. We get a view of the early days of the Ring of Fire from the POV of some different people, but the bulk of the story deals with a joint uptime-downtime maneuver to acquire the mining rights in the Ruhr Valley to start up a mass-production steel industry there, where Imperial Germany built its version in our universe. This isn’t a great story, but it’s an interesting one with decent prose and likeable characters. And it’s only $3.99 as an eBook, though it can be bought as a POD paper book for $10.99. I’d say it’s well worth the former but probably not the latter, since it’s only around 20-25,000 words.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. it may be boring to those who are not interested in background detailsBy Mark J. FingerAnother republishing of a series of articles from the Grantville Gazette. This is from the very early years of the 1632 universe (in fact it begins on the day that Grantville appears in 1632). It traces the beginning of Essen Steel and some of the early spread of mathematics (from the future) into the 1632 universe. These seemingly disconnected topics are united by some common characters. This essentially is a "back story" for some of the events in the main 1632 series, where Essen Steel and related developments (steam engines and early anti-biotics) are part of the main story line. The book is a little short. It could have been helped by including a couple more related stories, especially about the development of steam engines. Although reasonably well written, it may be boring to those who are not interested in background details.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Quick, light, entertainingBy J waltThe author certainly gets what the ROF books are all about, and avoids getting bogged down in excessive detail. This is written in a very Eric Flint pacing, with the story progressing quickly. In only 90 pages, there just isn't any great character development. In fact, we just barely get a chance to know them.It feels a lot like the first third of a novel, rather than a novella. I say that not so much as a slam, but in the hope that there is more to come. It's well written, and it captures the sense of adventure that makes this series great. What are The Crucibellus Manuscripts and who is Collette Dubois? Any mathematician living after the 17th century would have looked at you as though you were an idiot for asking. What did they have to do with the rise of industrial power in Europe? Read Kim's story and find out! A novel set in Eric Flint's 1632 Universe. This story was previously serialized in the Grantville Gazette. Five StarsBy Ron Ivins-McClearythis was a good book to add to my already extensive ring of fire collection The sixth rollicking, thought-provoking anthology of tales set in Eric Flint's phenomenal New York Times best-selling Ring of Fire series—all inspired and edited by the creator himself, Eric Flint. A cosmic accident sets the modern West Virginia town of Grantville down in war-torn seventeenth century Europe. It will take all the gumption of the resourceful, freedom-loving up-timers to find a way to flourish in mad and bloody end of medieval times. Are they up for it? You bet they are. Edited by Eric Flint, and inspired by his now-legendary 1632, this is the fun stuff that fills in the pieces of the Ring of Fire political, social and cultural puzzle as supporting characters we meet in the novels get their own lives, loves and life-changing stories.

XQTVB1HXJU \ The Grantville Gazette # Doc Th e Grantville Gazette By - Baen Books, United States, 2004. Book. Condition: New. Pbk.. Language: English . Brand New Book. The mysterious comic phenomena which the former West Virginians call the Ring of Fire hurled the town of Grantville back through time into the middle of the Thirty Years War. In spite of their advanced technology, the men and women of Grantville are greatly outnumbered- but they have no shortage of American courage and ingenuity. Eric Flint, creator of the Ring of Fire universe, presents a book of new fiction about the heroes of Grantville, as well as articles on the problems of bringing their technology to the 17th century. (Can you make penicillin from bread mold? Can you use literal horsepower to run a dynamo? Can you make a radio using 17th century glassware and metallurgy?) The Grantville Gazette is a fascinating exercise in alternate history and will be a must- by for everyone who read 1632 and 1633. The uptimers and their allies take on the Ottoman Empire at its height of power. The modern West Virginia town of Grantville has been displaced in time to continental Europe in 1632. Now four years have passed. The long-feared attack on Austria by the Ottoman Empire has begun. Armed with new weapons inspired by the time-displaced Americans of Grantville, the Turks are determined to do what they were unable to do in the universe the Americans came from: capture Vienna. The Ottomans have the advantage of being able to study the failings and errors of their own campaigns in a future they can now avoid. They are led by the young, dynamic, and ruthless Murad IV, the most capable emperor the Ottomans have produced in a century. They are equipped with weapons that would have seemed fantastical to the Turks of that other universe: airships, breech-loading rifles, rockets—even primitive tanks. And this time they won’t have to face massive reinforcements from Austria’s allies.

This is a graphic story of the gradual unveiling of the meaning of the Apocalypse in the light of the events of history. It traces this development through eighteen centuries, from the days of the apostolic and martyr Church to those of the mediaeval Church, the Reformed Church, and the Church of modern times. It is a history of the gradual evolution during eighteen centuries, under the influence of historical facts, of that system of interpretation which has commended itself to the most temperate and enlightened minds, including those of Sir Isaac Newton, and Jonathan Edwards in his history of Redemption, as in harmony with the Word and Providence of God.
