Reporting Time: 8:30AM Location: First Day – Report to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center Main Hospital Building located at 836 W. Wellington Avenue in . The Coordinator of Medical Student Affairs will email you the Reporting Instructions one week prior to the start of your rotation outlining the details of your mandatory orientation. Please note - If your first day falls on a legal holiday, you are required to contact Maria Garcia for a new orientation date.

Surgery Clerkship is an eight-week rotation offered to University of Illinois of Chicago College of Medicine (UIC), Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, Chicago (CMS) and Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) medical students only.

Rotations will be CANCELLED if completed forms and information are not received and approved by the Coordinator, Medical Student Affairs a minimum of four (4) weeks prior to the start of the rotation.

Rotation Description: Students will split their time between a general surgery service, a specialty service, and a trauma service over the course of the 8 weeks. Students will not be on a rotating call schedule, rather they will get all of their call experience on a night float schedule where they are assigned 5-6 nights in a row, followed by a day off from all clinical and educational responsibilities associated with the rotation (during night float, they are expected to arrive at 6:00 pm and leave after morning report at 7:00 am the next day).

Each student will be assigned to a surgical team with so that they can work alongside residents and an attending surgeon. Students will start every day with residents for morning rounds and are expected to be informed about the patients and record patient progress. In addition to attending clinics and participating in surgical procedures, students will attend all lectures and conferences. Students will not be scheduled for all cases on the daily OR schedule, allowing time for the students to round with an attending and residents on their patients and attend clinic.

Rotation Objectives: • Students will observe the concept of managing surgical patients within a larger context and system of health care. • Students will learn how to acquire, analyze, integrate, and apply current established medical knowledge in order to understand the diagnoses and treatment plans for surgical diseases. • Students will understand and implement the appropriate diagnostic work-up with indicated

5/15 Surgery Clerkship Reporting Instructions laboratory and imaging studies. • Students will demonstrate the interpersonal and communication skills to effectively convey health information to patients, patients’ families, and other healthcare professionals of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. • Students will learn to apply evidence based medicine to their surgical experiences.

Things to know • You will receive a hospital ID on your first day. This MUST be worn above the waist and visible • View mandatory Universal Protocol “Time out Video.” Video MUST be viewed before rotation start date. Students not complying with this protocol will not be allowed to continue their rotation. • Mandatory - Complete the CareConnection (Web-Based Patient Access Database) computer- based training. MUST be viewed before rotation start date. • Mandatory - Neptune Surgical Fluid Waste Management System – View PowerPoint before rotation start date. Students not complying with this protocol will not be allowed to continue their rotation. • Morning Report is Mandatory • O.R. Orientation is held on Monday and Wednesday at 2PM ONLY • Scrubs are available in OR locker room. Scrub Policy will be included in Orientation packet emailed to students before their first day of rotation. • OR locker - will be assigned by the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education • Student is assigned to 2 different Surgical Services and Trauma during the 8 week rotation. • A call room is available • Call room key - will be issued by Site Coordinator • A pager - will be assigned by Site Coordinator • Meal Card will be provided (when on-call) issued by Site Coordinator • Students wear long lab coats during the entire rotation, provided by Surgery Department. • Scheduled absences require prior approval by Site Preceptor before beginning of rotation • Any unplanned absences must be reported to Site Coordinator at (773) 296-7465

On final day of rotation: The Student Clearance Form is to be completed and returned to the Site Student Coordinator along with ID badge, Meal Card, Pager, Long Lab Coat, call room key, and parking permit hang tag if applicable.
