  • The Rhythms of Rhythm
The rhythms of rhythm Dafydd Gibbon Universität Bielefeld, Bielefeld, Germany & Jinan University, Guangzhou, China [email protected] The low frequency (LF) spectral analysis or ‘rhythm spectrum’ approach to the quanti- tative analysis and comparison of speech rhythms is extended beyond syllable or word rhythms to ‘rhetorical rhythms’ in read-aloud narratives, in a selection of exploratory scenarios, with the aim of developing a unified theory of speech rhythms. Current method- ologies in the field are first discussed, then the choice of data is motivated and the MODULATION-THEORETIC rhythm spectrum and rhythm spectrogram approach is applied to the amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) of speech. New concepts of RHYTHM FORMANT, RHYTHM SPECTROGRAM and RHYTHM FORMANT TRAJECTORY are introduced in the RHYTHM FORMANT THEORY (RFT) framework with its associated methodology RHYTHM FORMANT ANALYSIS (RFA) in order to capture second order regularities in the temporal variation of rhythms. The interaction of AM and FM rhythm factors is explored, contrasting English with Mandarin Chinese. The LF rhythm spectrogram is introduced in order to recover temporal information about long-term rhythms, and to investigate the configurative function of rhythm. The trajectory of highest magnitude frequencies through the component spectra of the LF spectrogram is extracted and applied in classifying readings in different languages and individual speaking styles using distance-based hierarchical clustering, and the existence of long-term second order ‘rhythms of rhythm’ in long narratives is shown. In the conclusion, pointers are given to the extension of this exploratory RFT rhythm approach for future quantitative confirmatory investigations. 1 Speech rhythms 1.1 Time domain and frequency domain methods Speech rhythms have been a field of enquiry since antiquity, yet there are still many open questions.

AIDS Awareness Week / Wodd AIDS Day EDUCATION SERVICES RICK MARCHAND, MANAGER ACTIVE VOLUNTEERS, DEPARTMENT TOTAL: 151 EDUCATION SERVICES Department Manager's Annual Report, 1992 1992 was a year of change and expansion for Education Services; it was a year spent developing a new vision for AIDS education. We assessed our community involvement, and strengthened our commitment to supporting the gay community. We collaborated with persons living with HIV and AIDS to provide more direct educational and training opportunities for an increasingly diverse HN population. We made a commitIilent to provide more effective education services for women. We shared our resources and experience with representatives from Asian, Latin and Deaf communities. In this year of reevaluating our direction and priorities, health promotion emerged as the guiding influence for our program planning and delivery. Health promotion gives us a way of understanding the role of education in treatment and prevention. Access to relevant and appropriate information and experience provide the basis for individuals to manage their own health. We want to renew our emphasis on community development and action. Individuals are looking for opportunities that enable them to have more personal control over their lives. For many, education can provide a pathway to empowerment. A decade ago, the gay and lesbian community founded AIDS Vancouver as a community-based organization to address an emerging epidemic that most of society preferred to ignore.

  • Popular Music Analysis and Musicology: Bridging the Gap
Popular Music (1993) Volume 12/2. Copyright © 1993 Cambridge University Press Popular music analysis and musicology: bridging the gap RICHARD MIDDLETON Since their beginnings, popular music studies have conducted an implicit (some- times explicit) dialogue with musicology. To be sure, the musicological side of this conversation has more often than not been marked by insult, incomprehension or silence; and popular music scholars for their part have tended to concentrate on musicology's deficiencies. But musicology is changing (more about this later); at the same time, recent work on popular music suggests a new confidence, manifest- ing itself in part in a willingness to engage with and adapt mainstream methods.11 believe each needs the other. Within the sphere of analysis, the main problem felt to attach to mainstream methods has been the tendency to formalism. In contrast, popular music analysis has insisted (rightly, I think) on the priority of meaning. Much of the best work has been semiotic or interpretative (Laing, Tagg, Bradby, Grossberg) or has pursued theories of social and cultural homology (Hebdige, Shepherd). However imposing this body of work, though, there is a suspicion that sometimes insufficient atten- tion has been paid to the sounds themselves - to the intra-musical structures of what I call the 'primary' level of signification (Middleton 1990, p. 220). Somehow, we need to find ways of bringing the patterns created in the sounds themselves back into the foreground, without as a consequence retreating into an inappropri- ate formalism. And if we can do this, we may well find that we are contributing to an advance in general musical analysis.

EQUITY RESEARCH | October 4, 2016 MUSIC IN THE AIR PAINT IT BLACK Avoiding the prisoner’s dilemma and assessing the risks to music’s UBLE DO M nascent turnaround ALBU The complicated web of competing interests in the music industry poses a threat to the budding turnaround that we expect to almost double global music revenue over the next 15 years. In this second of a “double album“ on the music industry’s return to growth, we assess the risks and scenarios that could derail our thesis, from the risk of “windowing” and exclusivity turning off fans to an acceleration in declines for physical CDs and downloads that would come too fast for streaming to fill the void in the near term. Rhythms of rhythm Dafydd Gibbon (2020-10-06, rev. 2021-01-10) Abstract The low frequency (LF) spectral analysis or ‘rhythm spectrum’ approach to the quantitative analysis and comparison of speech rhythms is extended beyond syllable or word rhythms to ‘rhetorical rhythms’ in read-aloud narratives, in a selection of exploratory scenarios. Current methodologies in the field are first discussed, then the choice of data is motivated and the rhythm spectrum approach is applied on modulation-theoretic grounds to both amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) of speech. The interaction of AM and FM rhythm factors is explored, contrasting LF spectral features of the accent similarity constraint in English with those of arbitrary sequences of lexical tones in Mandarin Chinese. The LF rhythm spectrogram is introduced in order to recover temporal information about long-term rhythms, and to investigate signal-to-symbol mapping between LF spectrogram patterns and morphophonological patterns. The trajectory of highest magnitude frequencies through the component spectra of the LF spectrogram is extracted and applied in classifying readings in different languages using distance-based hierarchical clustering, following the practice in dialectometry and stylometry, but with speech signals, not texts, and the existence of long-term second order ‘rhythms of rhythm’ in long narratives is shown. In the conclusion, pointers are given to the extension of this exploratory rhythms of rhythm approach for future quantitative confirmatory investigations.

  • Measurement of Multiparametric Quantities at Perception of Sensory Information by Living Creatures
EPJ Web of Conferences 77, 00016 ( 2014) DOI: 10.1051/epjconf/20147700016 C Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2014 Measurement of multiparametric quantities at perception of sensory information by living creatures Roald Taymanov and Kseniia Sapozhnikovaa D.I. Mendeleyev Institute for Metrology, 190005 19 Moskovsky pr., St.Petersburg, Russian Federation Abstract. In the paper it is shown that at present the problem of measurements of emotions as multidimensional (multiparametric) quantities is of interest. A measurement model developed by the authors is presented. It enables signals-stimuli generating emotions in sound combinations and their series to be selected and quantitatively estimated. The measurement model provides an adjusted delay (short-time memory) and joint non-linear conversion of audible and delayed acoustical signals, selection of infrasound signals-stimuli as well as identification of emotional images including the ensembles of signals-stimuli and their series. It is demonstrated how the “mechanism” of emotional perception of sound impacts was developed in the process of evolution. Possibilities to decode the emotional content of biolinguistic signals of animals are considered. Future trends of investigations are indicated. 1 Introduction investigations are multidimensional (multiparametric). To make a transfer to their measurement it is necessary to The analysis of publications in various branches of ground and develop corresponding measurement models. science [1, 2] demonstrates that the interest in The measurement model in biology, psychology, measurements of quantities related to man, his memory, economics or other sciences related to animals, humans talents, level of knowledge, etc. grows significantly faster and their activities, as a rule, reflects the idea of a model than that in measurements related to inanimate nature.
