I begin this project with an exploration of literatures of gay shame to illustrate how that concept is based on a specific, limited type of gay experience. Silvan Tomkins’s affect theory suggests that we should understand shame more broadly than it is conceived in the gay shame literature. I argue that Tomkins’s ideas regarding shame allow shame to maintain its utility even in a time of apparent social and political progress. viii I then explore literature on queer publics to show how those publics maintain a complex relationship with privacy. I do so in order to encourage the exploration of a type of queer public that has received only scant scholarly attention: LGBT choral organizations. Because LGBT choruses exist specifically to enact public performances, their relationship to privacy differs from those of other forms of queer publics. This project examines manifestations of gay shame and pride in the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus. Interviews with SDGMC members reveal a rift in thinking between members of the group, some of whom report not having experienced the kind of gay shame discussed by other members, but who, in the words of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, come to identify with those men and their personal accounts of shame. In the following two chapters I use analytic autoethnography to explore my experiences in SDGMC over the past five years; first, to discuss experience of performing a canonical gay shame narrative in front of audiences, and, second, to discuss performances of failed masculinity, performances enacted as part of my participation in choral activities. The dissertation ends with a discussion of the implications of identifying with shame and the current pride movement. I claim that the productive possibilities of shame are realized through interactions and performances facilitated by membership in a gay men’s chorus, where

  • Alexander the Great and Hephaestion
    2019-3337-AJHIS-HIS 1 Alexander the Great and Hephaestion: 2 Censorship and Bisexual Erasure in Post-Macedonian 3 Society 4 5 6 Same-sex relations were common in ancient Greece and having both male and female 7 physical relationships was a cultural norm. However, Alexander the Great is almost 8 always portrayed in modern depictions as heterosexual, and the disappearance of his 9 life-partner Hephaestion is all but complete in ancient literature. Five full primary 10 source biographies of Alexander have survived from antiquity, making it possible to 11 observe the way scholars, popular writers and filmmakers from the Victorian era 12 forward have interpreted this evidence. This research borrows an approach from 13 gender studies, using the phenomenon of bisexual erasure to contribute a new 14 understanding for missing information regarding the relationship between Alexander 15 and his life-partner Hephaestion. In Greek and Macedonian society, pederasty was the 16 norm, and boys and men did not have relations with others of the same age because 17 there was almost always a financial and power difference. Hephaestion was taller and 18 more handsome than Alexander, so it might have appeared that he held the power in 19 their relationship. The hypothesis put forward here suggests that writers have erased 20 the sexual partnership between Alexander and Hephaestion because their relationship 21 did not fit the norm of acceptable pederasty as practiced in Greek and Macedonian 22 culture or was no longer socially acceptable in the Roman contexts of the ancient 23 historians. Ancient biographers may have conducted censorship to conceal any 24 implication of femininity or submissiveness in this relationship.

    LeatherWalk aims to keep SF kinky Organizers of this year's LeatherWalk are challenging participants to ensure San Francisco doesn't lose its sexually subversive ways. The theme of the 25th annual fundraiser for a trio of local nonprofits is "Keep San Francisco Kinky." The official start to the city's Leather Week, the stroll through several gay neighborhoods will take place Sunday, September 18. The first walk was held in 1992 by Art Tomaszewski, a former AIDS Emergency Fund board president and former Bare Chest Calendar man and Mr. Headquarters Leather. In 2001, Sandy "Mama" Reinhardt, a longtime leather community member and fundraiser, took over production of the walk. Lance Holman, who has been a longtime walk volunteer for AEF and its sister organization the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund, assumed leadership of the walk in 2013. Last year Folsom Street Events, which produces the Folsom Street Fair, set to take place Sunday, September 25, and other parties and fairs, partnered with AEF/BCEF to put on the LeatherWalk in an effort to boost participation and increase the amount of money raised. Folsom Street Events is again taking a leadership role this year in organizing the walk, with the money raised again benefiting itself and the two emergency funds. AEF last month merged with Positive Resource Center, while BCEF is becoming its own standalone entity. The goal this year is to raise $20,000 through the walk. "We walk together to celebrate leather, kink, family and community - all while raising funds for three great agencies," noted Folsom Street Events in an email announcing this year's event.

June 5: World Environment Day By resolution 2994 (XXVII) of December 15, 1972, the General Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day, to deepen public awareness of the need to preserve and enhance the environment. That date was chosen because it was the opening day of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm1972), which led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Building on Heather Love's observation that queer communities possess a seemingly magical ability to transform shame into pride - queer alchemy - I argue that gay males have created a genre of fiction that draws on this alchemical power through their uses of the Fabulous: fabulous realism.
