First, to analyze and evaluate the status of the "holiness" message today. In this analysis the problems raised by the preaching of holiness will be faced squarely. Then, a fresh examination of the Scriptures will be attempted upon which the holiness message is based. Finally, a constructive theological statement will be proposed in which, it is hoped, some of the most ser­ ious questions will find a satisfactory answer. This is not a book for the scholar primarily though it is hoped he will find it worth his time to examine either to approve, or, pref­ erably to be challenged to a more adequate work in this field. It is first of all a study for the thoughtful and questioning minister and lay­ men of whom there are so many, who, desirous of maintaining theological loyalty are beset by problems raised by the preaching of holiness. Many of our most gifted young people have felt that intellectual honesty required their withdrawal from the "holiness ranks", however emotionally reluctant they may have been, because of insurmountable rational problems. It is the conviction of the author that many of these problems have acceptable solutions. It is, also, a study undertaken in the interest of a more effective and dynamic presentation of the holiness message to this generation. We have lived in that message, breathed it, eaten it, slept through it, cut our teeth on it, received it, doubted it, analyzed it, put our faith in it, loved, preached and taught it for all the years appropriate to these things. When personal reactions have been exhausted and the vicarious 2 reactions of all sorts of persons have been added, it is felt that if familiarity qualifies one to speak about a matter, at least we are qualified in that respect. Fortunately paradox has become respectable. In most responsible thinking, two or more rather widely divergent ideas must be accepted and in some measure brought into a harmony that does not violate the integrity of either truth. There is paradox in holiness preaching and also in the experience of the analyst who attempts to commend the doc­ trine. The tension between a morally transforming personal religious experience and the tremendous intellectual problems involved in it, keeps the author facinated, fearful, prayerful and restless. That tension echoes the paradox between doctrine and living experience. Paradox and tension exist in all living situations. These are not things to be deplored. Creativity can only thrive in tension. The abortive demand for pre-mature intellectual peace is death to thinking. We are not attempting to solve difficulties but to restore them so that in the wholesome contest between doctrine and life, dynamic and pro­ ductive and sanctified Christian activity may thrive and expand. Perhaps, we had better explain this. Committed as deeply as the author is to that which the doctrine of holiness means to life, there is the most painful concern growing daily in respect of the limited hearing which the doctrine receives. We do not share the opinion of some that the holiness people have all the truth, even all the truth about holiness. We do feel that the doctrine of a "Deeper Spiritual Life", or "The Life Hid with Christ in God", or whatever name one pre*- fers, is more adequately delineated by holiness doctrine. But "The Life" itself is shared by Christians in every tradition. Hence, the 3 question, Why are we not better heard? More serious yet is the fact of a growing spiritual indifference among holiness people. Perhaps others also struggle against the weight of dis-interest but, to us, who, filled with the Holy Spirit presumably, ought to be the example of the world's solution to indifference, the lack is of particular seriousness. In a word, the problem seems to resolve itself into a statement such as this, the doctrine of holiness has not made adequate provision for the human element in life. The paradox between theory and life has been too easily solved and the tension relaxed so that the normal and desirable ability to recognize problems and grapple with difficulties has been relegated to other areas of life and the religious life left all but isolated from reality. That holiness teaching recognizes the life problem is not denied, but only that the doctrinal provision of it is missing. This is a harsh, bald statement but proposed here to stimulate thinking and to provide a piece de resistance with which to engage the reader and the author. This statement may not be true, but it has served to plunge the author into a fresh examination of the Scriptures. What does the Bible say about holiness? Does it resolve all tension? Can the Scriptures speak to our delemma? Is there a directive for practical problems? The study will first analyze the problem, as we see it. That is, where is the problem and why is it a problem? It is necessary before examining

To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation. And should we assume that the newer the translation the better? The book under review should give considerable help to those who are asking these and similar questions. In his Preface, Mr Macgregor gives his own experience: “As a young Christian I went to a church that used the Authorised Version (AV). However, on moving with my wife and family to a different area, we went to a church that used the Good News Bible (GNB) and the New International Version (NIV). This enticed me away from the AV for a while. At first these new versions appeared to be easier to read and understand. However, soon I began to notice serious discrepancies (that is, Old Testament references to Christ veiled or missing) in the GNB. This troubled me greatly. I stopped using it, but continued with the NIV, which seemed more reliable. However, as I studied it and compared it with the AV I had first used, I began to feel concerned. The NIV had verses missing, and later I found it had many words missing. Its rendering of some parts gave a completely different meaning. The more I read and compared, the more concerned I became. Also, like the GNB, the NIV was more difficult to commit to memory. I bought a Revised Authorised Version (called in the USA, and now here, the New King James Version (NKJV)).

    Study guide for Calvinism #not_fatalism Calvinism: Argued in Outline I. CALVINISM B. B. Warfield defines Calvinism as theism and evangelicalism come to their own. That is to say, quite simply, that God saves sinners. He does not merely provide the possibility or opportunity for them to be saved. He does not “do His part” and leave man to do his part to accomplish salvation. No, God actually saves sinners, and that salvation is all of Him. Cornelius Van Til says that Calvinism’s only system is to be open to the Scriptures. He adds, “The doctrines of Calvinism are not deduced in a priori fashion from one major principle such as the sovereignty of God.” This has been one of the most frequent arguments against Calvinism. The charge is that it fastens on to one Scripture principle, God’s sovereignty, and proceeds to develop a logical system based on that principle, with little or no regard to Scripture. As Van Til indicates, such a charge is groundless. Here is a fair statement of the Calvinistic position. We may here note the following Clarifications in particular: 1. The Five Points. What has just been said will make it clear that Calvinism is more than “five points.” The five points were actually answers to five points made by Arminians. Five-point Calvinism is frequently referred to as TULIP theology, using the T-U-L-I-P as an acrostic: Total Depravity; Unconditional Election; Limited Atonement (though Calvinists believe that Arminians, not they, limit the atonement; they prefer such terms as particular redemption or definite atonement); Irresistible Grace; Perseverance of the saints.

Arminius is taken as a representative of original Arminianism and Limborch is viewed as a representative of developed Remonstrantism. The problem of the dissertation is the nature of the relationship between Arminianism and Remonstrantism. Some argue that the two systems are the fundamentally the same, others argue that Arminianism logically entails Remonstrantism and others argue that they ought to be radically distinguished. The thesis of the dissertation is that the presuppositions of Arminianism and Remonstrantism are radically different. The thesis is limited to the doctrine of grace. There is no discussion of predestination. Rather, the thesis is based upon four categories of grace: (1) its need; (2) its nature; (3) its ground; and (4) its appropriation. The method of the dissertation is a careful, separate analysis of the two theologians.

The average churchman draws back from it, deplores and abhors it, longs for the day when "law and order" may prevail again. "Down with revolution!" he pleads and prays-perhaps in vain. It may seem strange, then, to relate John Wesley to revolution, but that is precisely what it is necessary to do if we are to talk about Wesleyan theology. And this is what we are attempting to do. We will not engage in the fascinating, formal, intricate, and abstract aspects of theology in this little book. Rather it is the fountain out of which flows the need for theology, namely, life, which we wish to explore. Christian doctrines, at least the central ones, were life experiences before they became statements of faith. They were life involvements and profound commitments before they were neat propositions packed into theology books. It is possible to enter theology through the gates of life, but life cannot be recaptured by mere theology. It is the life, the personal participation in grace, the spiritual dynamic of the Christian's interrelatedness with God, that captures our attention. Only in this dimension of the total theological enterprise known as Wesleyan theology can we find the key to its significance.
