Borooah* University of Ulster Donal Dineen** University of Limerick Nicola Lynch*** University of Limerick February 2010 Abstract This paper represents an investigation of the broad factors which underpin the success of feeder schools in terms of the proportion of their “sits” who proceed to third-level education and, also, in terms of the “quality” of their educational destinations. It distinguishes between three school types: public (non-fee paying, English language) private (fee paying, English language), and Gaelscoil (non-fee paying, Irish language). Both private schools and the Gaelscoileanna reported much better results than public schools. From this, the paper disentangles the nature of this advantage by investigating the extent to which private school and Gaelscoil advantage over public schools was predicated on better circumstances and/or on better responses to circumstances. Our results show that private schools and the Gaelscoileanna had a response advantage over public schools: if private schools and the Gaelscoileanna were constrained to responding to their circumstances in the manner in which public schools responded to theirs, the performance of private schools and the Gaelscoileanna would suffer. By constraining the coefficient responses of all three types of schools to be that of public schools, we arrive at a revised list of the "best performing" twenty five feeder schools in Ireland.

Sacred Heart College welcomes visitors from Lismore Trinity Catholic College, Trinity Beenleigh College, St Joseph’s College, Canberra Marist College and Assumption College Kilmore. You are all most welcome to our College and I hope that your time with us is both enjoyable and memorable. Such occasions bind us together as a larger part of the Marist family. These opportunities remind us all of the wonderful and special heritage which we cherish in being Catholic, Marist and Champagnat Colleges. St Marcellin is smiling down on us. A newsletter for Member Schools of Marist Schools Australia published fortnightly during term time From Dr Frank Malloy Dear Colleagues, As we mourn the victims of the massacre last Friday in Christchurch, the ubiquitous nature and capacity for influence of social media, poignantly arrests us as educators. Social media when used appropriately is a most natural and uplifting sharing of life and experience among family, friends, and colleagues. The live, uncensored, multi media nature of the platform and its incredible reach around the globe is compelling and powerful. It is a form of communication replete with good news and moments of joyous significance. However, as witnessed last Friday, social media can be used as a destructive tool for evil, inciting hatred and inflicting immense pain and suffering. Broadcasted murder of innocent, defenceless people praying to God, violently and indescribably shocks us. The massacre was the antithesis of love, nurture and care, God’s gifts to the unique nature of human kind. In this current global outpouring of grief, sympathy, questioning, and solidarity, what messages do we choose to amplify when listening and sharing with the young people in our care, many of whom are voracious users of social media? On Sunday at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in the presence of Muslim Leaders, Archbishop of Sydney Anthony Fisher OP, spoke to the alienated, resentful, and brutal mindset of the radicalised. MSA Newsletter A newsletter for Member Schools of Marist Schools Australia published fortnightly during term time From Brother Michael Green Dear Brothers, Colleagues and Friends A week after the powerful symbol of ashes was traced on our foreheads, and how are we doing in our time of Lenten renewal? Perhaps we might heed some advice from St Marcellin. The story goes that, just after Ash Wednesday one year at the Hermitage, some young trainee Brothers, full of youthful fervour for what they might do for Lent, came to Father Champagnat to request permission to join in the full fasting of Lent (something that was not usually allowed for any Brother under 21 years of age.) They were pleased when the Founder agreed, but rather surprised by what he said next. Yes, he told them, they could have permission to fast but only if they allowed him to determine the parameters for their fasting. What he then set out for them had little to do with skipping lunch, as they had imagined. He proposed a three-way fast. First, he said, they should have their eyes fast. By that he meant that, rather than engaging with every stimulus which came their way, they should make time and space to disengage, to be quiet, to be recollected. Second, he suggested that they should have their tongues fast, to listen rather than to speak. Third, they should fast from acting insensitively or impulsively, and being victim to every little whim or emotion. Additionally, he counselled the young Brothers that there was something from which they should never fast: they should not allow their souls to fast, never to neglect to nourish their inner selves.

MSA Newsletter A newsletter for Member Schools of Marist Schools Australia published fortnightly during term time From Brother Michael Green 18 October 2011 Dear Members of the Marist Family Even in deep Melbourne, a game of rugby was the cause of the normal evening prayer time of our community being abandoned. We are usually quite faithful to our Sunday evening pre-dinner ‘holy half-hour’ in front of the Blessed Sacrament, so the desertion of our spiritual duties was not done lightly. This was not just any game, of course; the Wallabies were taking on the All Blacks in the semi-final in the Rugby World Cup. National pride on the line, and all that. Code rivalry laid aside. One confrere had organised to supply each of the rest of us with little Aussie flags to wave as all the Australian tries were scored, and a large ensign was draped on the wall. We even had pies and sauce. All was set. We’ll get over it. In time. It is a good thing to have hopes and dreams, and ones that are even more important than desperately wanting our footy team to win. For us who spend our lives in the Christian the education of young people, the sowing of hope is the stuff of what we do. At this time of year, in particular, when graduation ceremonies and end-of-year rituals take place in our schools, there is a heightened experience of this. At the end of last term, most of our New South Wales colleagues celebrated the graduation of Year 12, and during Term 4 those in other parts of the country will do the same.
