  • An Amber Attractions Production the Golden Days of Australian Bandstand a Musical Look at 60'S Culture
An Amber Attractions Production The Golden days of Australian Bandstand A musical look at 60's Culture Australia’s longest running TV pop show ran for 15 years on channel nine and was beamed into, two million Australian loungeroom’s each week. Hosted by the mild mannered Brian Henderson, it featured regular Australian singers who became known as the "Bandstand Family". The show popularised the talents of Col Joye, Little Patti, Bryan Davies, Judy Stone, The Seekers, Johnny Farnham and The Bee Gees to name a few. As the program grew in popularity the audience was introduced to many overseas stars such as Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Tom Jones, Hermans Hermits, Chubby Checker plus many more. While other pop shows presented screaming fans and long-haired beat groups, Bandstand somehow seemed to ignore the extreme trends in music that happened in the mid and late 1960s. Although it showcased a range of pop performers, it shied away from the brash and the scruffy, becoming a more family orientated programme than a show strictly for teenagers. Each episode featured the "Bandstand Ballet" who kept the audience up to date with the latest dance trends. The Audience will RE-LIVE those swinging days of BANDSTAND. Be transported back to their loungeroom's with memorable Film clips BOP along with the DANCERS on screen and sing their heart's out to those unforgettable songs. Produced and Presented by Australia's favourite entertainers, Eddie Daniels and Suzie Lee. BANDSTAND Playlist examples Happy Together - The Turtles Boom bang a Bang - Lulu Do

  • Cava of Toledo; Or, the Gothic Princess
Author: Augusta Amelia Stuart Title: Cava of Toledo; or, the Gothic Princess Place of publication: London Publisher: Printed at the Minerva-Press, for A. K. Newman and Co. Date of publication: 1812 Edition: 1st ed. Number of volumes: 5 CAVA OF TOLEDO. A ROMANCE. Lane, Darling, and Co. Leadenhall-Street. CAVA OF TOLEDO; OR, The Gothic Princess. A ROMANCE. IN FIVE VOLUMES BY AUGUSTA AMELIA STUART, AUTHOR OF LUDOVICO’S TALE; THE ENGLISH BROTHERS; EXILE OF PORTUGAL, &c. &c. Fierce wars, and faithful loves, And truths severe, in fairy fiction drest. VOL. I. LONDON: PRINTED AT THE Minerva Press, FOR A. K. NEWMAN AND CO. LEADENHALL-STREET. 1812. PREFACE. THE author of the following sheets, struck by the account historians have given of the fall of the Gothic empire in Spain, took the story of Cava for the foundation of a romance: whether she has succeeded or not in rendering it interesting, must be left to her readers to judge. She thinks it, however, necessary to say she has not falsified history; all relating to the war is exact: the real characters she has endeavoured to delineate such as they were; —Rodrigo—count Julian—don Palayo—Abdalesis, the Moor—queen Egilone—Musa—and Tariff, are drawn as the Spanish history represents them. Cava was never heard of from her quitting Spain with her father; of course, her adventures, from that period, are the coinage of the author’s brain. The enchanted palace, which Rodrigo broke into, is mentioned in history. Her fictitious characters she has moulded to her own will; and has found it a much more difficult task than she expected, to write an historical romance, and adhere to the truth, while she endeavoured to embellish it.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA^AAAAAAAAAAAAA DOUBLY GIFTED TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT The Annual Bell Jazz Lecture, 2009 Jeannie Lewis The Seventeenth Annual Bell Jazz Lecture Delivered 19 September 2009 Cctebrerfin^ ^^^ iS'O ye»« Waverley Library 1859-2009 © Jeannie Lewis ISBN 978-0-9757142-5-6 Published & printed by Waverley Library 32-48 Denison Street, Bondi Junction 2022 Telephone: (02) 9386 7777 Fax: (02) 9386 7700 Introduction Once again the Double Gifted Committee presents the Bell Jazz Lecture for the 17th consecutive year. The Bell Lecture was initiated by the late Hcirry Stein to honour the contribution given to Australian jazz by our best loved and most appreciated jazzman, Graeme Bell, who celebrates his 95th birthday this year. Thanks must be given to Waverley Library and to the Friends of Waver ley Library, without whose support the Committee would not be able to present a prominent and experienced member of Australia's jazz commu nity and to bring to us their individual view of jazz. This year the Lecture is being given by Jeannie Lewis, a woman who has been actively singing since the 1950s. She began as a blues singer and has remained faithful to that genre whilst developing a career in musical theatre and featuring the songs of women in many facets and in one woman shows. She has remarkable vocal abilities and has travelled and studied song in many areas of the world. This experience will, 1 am sure, enable Jeannie to present a fascinating and unique lecture. Kate Dunbar Doubly Gifted Committee Jeannie Lewis Jeannie Lewis' work on stage, in the recording studio and as a writer and teacher transcends boundaries of genre and culture.

  • Countdown and Cult Music Television Programmes
Giuffre, Liz Countdown and Cult Music Television Programmes Countdown and cult music television programmes: an Australian case study Liz Giuffre Abstract Music television programs, programs that focus on music for their core content, have been produced all over the world for all types of markets. However there remains little sustained work on them beyond studies of key production periods, franchise waves or biography-like narratives. This article shows that theories of Cult TV can be applied to music television programs to help explore this neglected form, as well as helping to expand Cult TV’s theoretical reach beyond its traditional fare of narrative driven, fiction series. This article offers 1970s and ‘80s Australian music television program Countdown as a prime example of Cult TV, first in the context of its initial production and consumption in 1970s and ‘80s Australia, and also in terms of its subsequent influence on contemporary audiences from a historical perspective. The Cult TV frame extends to the program itself in its original incarnation, as well as additional recontextualisations in new music television programs, and the continued work of its former host, Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum. Introduction1 Music television is an unusual type of programming. It provides both regular entertainment that is watched intensely while on air, and produces key moments that survive well in audience collective memory. ‘Live’ music performance and interview series Countdown remains an icon of the Australian television and music industries.2 Created by the national public service broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC),3 the show was broadcast from 1974 to 1987 on Sunday evenings and was highly influential with television audiences and the broader music industry.4 Countdown provided opportunities for music artists and audiences to engage with each other in a way that had not previously been possible.

No part of this work covered by the copyright hereon may be reproduced or used in any form or by any means graphic, electronic, or mechanical, including photocopying, recording, taping, Web distribution or information storage retrieval systems without the written permission of the publisher. Summary Don Juan is a unique approach to the already popular legend of the philandering womanizer immortalized in literary and operatic works. Byron’s Don Juan, the name comically anglicized to rhyme with “new one” and “true one,” is a passive character, in many ways a victim of predatory women, and more of a picaresque hero in his unwitting roguishness. Not only is he not the seductive, ruthless Don Juan of legend, he is also not a Byronic hero. That role falls more to the narrator of the comic epic, the two characters being more clearly distinguished than in Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. In Beppo: A Venetian Story, Byron discovered the appropriateness of ottava rima to his own particular style and literary needs. This Italian stanzaic form had been exploited in the burlesque tales of Luigi Pulci, Francesco Berni, and Giovanni Battista Casti, but it was John Hookham Frere’s (1817-1818) that revealed to Byron the seriocomic potential for this flexible form in the satirical piece he was planning. The colloquial, conversational style of ottava rima worked well with both the narrative line of Byron’s mock epic and the serious digressions in which Byron rails against tyranny, hypocrisy, cant, sexual repression, and literary mercenaries.

The thesis explores the relationship between the Australian folk revival and Australian Trade Unions. It provides a detailed study of events in the post war history of the union movement and the folk revival as evidence of a long relationship between them. Through a series of interviews with songwriters, and a discussion of folk revival magazines and folk song books, the thesis investigates the details of the connections between the two movements, and the social and political effects of these movements on changes that have occurred in Australia since the end of World War 2.
