It is a primarily residential district characterized by distinctive homes constructed from the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century, but also includes a small number of commercial and institutional properties dating from the same period. The district retains a high degree of integrity in both its architecture and setting, and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places as the North End Historic District on December 17, 1982 (5EP.333, 82001017). This nomination changes the name of the district to its commonly used name, provides additional documentation of the Old North End’s history and significance, modifies the areas of significance, expands the period of significance, increases the district boundary to include additional contributing properties, and excludes a small number of properties that have lost historic integrity. The amended district is bounded on the north by the Denver and Rio Grande railroad tracks, on the south by Uintah Street, on the east by the alley between Nevada Avenue and Weber Street, and on the west by Monument Valley Park. The amended district shares the historically defined boundary of the Old North End neighborhood on the north, south, and west. The eastern boundary excludes the easternmost blocks of the neighborhood. Approximately six blocks of this area, in the southeast corner of the neighborhood, have been previously listed in the North Weber Street-Wahsatch Avenue Historic Residential District (5EP.348, 85000205, National Register listed February 8, 1985). The remainder of the eastern boundary of the Old North End Historic District borders a portion of the neighborhood that contains a high number of properties that are non-contributing due to loss of integrity or construction dates outside of the period of significance. With this amendment, the district will be approximately 392 acres in size and will consist of 1001 buildings, exclusive of outbuildings, including 903 contributing buildings and 98 non-contributing buildings. ______________________________________________________________________________ Narrative Description Setting To the north of the Old North End Historic District boundary is the neighborhood of Roswell. Formerly known as the town of Roswell, the community was a nineteenth century railroad junction settlement that was incorporated as a part of Colorado Springs through a series of annexations ending in 1967. The southern boundary of the historic district borders the campus of Colorado College, a private liberal arts college founded in 1874. The eastern boundary borders the North Weber Street-Wahsatch Avenue Historic Residential District on its southern end and a predominantly non-contributing mixed residential/commercial area on its northern end. The western boundary of the district follows the contours of Monument Valley Park. The heavily wooded city park opened in 1907, and is also listed in the National Register (5EP.613, 06001287, January 25, 2007). The Old North End neighborhood is generally laid out in a grid pattern of broad north/south avenues and narrower east/west streets, creating rectangular blocks bisected by north/south Section 8 page 5 United States Department of the Interior National Park Service / National Register of Historic Places Registration Form NPS Form 10-900 OMB No. 1024-0018 Old North

  • Artus and Anne Van Briggle and Colorado College
ARTUS AND ANNE VAN BRIGGLE AND COLORADO COLLEGE CHAPTER TEN ARTUS AND ANNE VAN BRIGGLE AND COLORADO COLLEGE1 by R. Laurie and Thomas H. Simmons Editor’s Note: What a story we have to tell! It is a tale of: 1) A young man who goes on a quest to create a beautiful pottery glaze. 2) Star-crossed lovers who meet – where else? – in Paris. 3) A kindly college professor who uses his scientific knowledge to guide the young man, working in the basement of a historic college building, to the perfection of the pottery glaze. 4) A secret formula that is locked in a bank vault for ten years. 5) A young widow who rises above adversity to build an enduring memorial to her late husband. Many people know the importance of Van Briggle pottery in the history of Colorado Springs, but very few know that Colorado College and a number of its people played a major role in that history. Here, excerpted from an application for designation of the Van Briggle Memorial Pottery Building as a national historic place, is the story. The founder of one of the nation’s longest-lived, most highly acclaimed art pottery companies, Artus Van Briggle, was born on March 21, 1869, in Felicity, Ohio. His family tree reportedly included Sixteenth Century Flemish painters Pieter and Jan Brughel. The young Van Briggle displayed artistic talents at an early age. At seventeen, he moved to Cincinnati to work and study, finding a position painting faces on china dolls at the Arnold Fairyland Doll Store.

I-25 Improvements Through the Colorado Springs Urbanized Area Environmental Assessment Appendix 6, Historic Resources Survey Report Volume I FEBRUARY 2004 UPDATE ON RESOURCE ELIGIBILITY The February 2004 information below supercedes the May 2003 information that is found in this Interstate 25 Environmental Assessment Historic Resources Survey Report, History and Survey Results, Volume II regarding the following two resources: Colorado College (5EP611) The December 2003 information in this report indicates that that Colorado College was evaluated as being not eligible for listing to the National Register of Historic Places. In February 2004, the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) commented that the College may be eligible. Additional investigation would be needed to determine eligibility. However, since the SHPO found that the I-25 Proposed Action would result in a finding of “no historic properties affected” for this resource, a determination of eligibility is not required for the I-25 Environmental Assessment. Stratton Meadows (5EP4224) The December 2003 information in this report indicates that the Stratton Meadows neighborhood was evaluated as being not eligible for listing to the National Register of Historic Places. In February 2004, the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) commented that this neighborhood may be eligible, and additional investigation would be needed to determine eligibility. However, since the SHPO found that the I-25 Proposed Action would result in a finding of “no historic properties affected” for this resource, a determination of eligibility is not required for the I-25 Environmental Assessment. • The Artistry of Artus & Anne Van Briggle
From Paris to the Plains: The Artistry of Artus & Anne Van Briggle When Artus Van Briggle stepped off the train at the Colorado Springs station in March 1899, he carried a secret formula. After years of study and experimentation, Van Briggle successfully devised a matte glaze that was in contrast to the traditional High-Gloss pottery of the Victorian Era. Coming west to seek a cure for his tuberculosis, Van Briggle founded a pottery that combined his innovative glaze, unique artistic vision and inspiration drawn from our natural setting to revolutionize American ceramics. Prior to arriving in Colorado Springs, Artus Van Briggle studied art in Paris from 1893 to 1896. His experiences there transformed both his personal and professional lives. Artus studied at the Julian Academy and often visited the Louvre and Sévres Ceramics Museums in Paris. There he admired the delicate, dead or matte glazes of China’s Ming Dynasty. Inspired to rediscover the long-lost formula for these beautifully soft finishes, Artus began his life’s work. It was also in Paris that Van Briggle met his fiancé, fellow art student Anne Lawrence Gregory. Anne joined Artus in Colorado Springs in1900 and the couple married two years later. Van Briggle Art Pottery produced award winning ceramics in the Art Nouveau style. Understood largely as a response to the mechanization and urbanization of the industrial age, Art Nouveau (new art in French) was an international style in vogue from 1890-1910. Incorporating natural decorative motifs such as plants and animals, artists stressed harmony between the object and its decoration.
