News Release 1 November 2012 TSONGA, TIPSAREVIC COMPLETE SINGLES FIELD AT 2012 BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS LONDON – Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Janko Tipsarevic will complete the singles field at the 2012 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 5-12 November. The Frenchman and the Serb’s places at the season-ending showdown were confirmed following results at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris on Thursday, where they both advanced to the quarter-finals. Tsonga and Tipsarevic join Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro in the singles line-up, as the world’s best players battle for the last title of the season at The O2. Tsonga has captured two ATP World Tour titles in 2012, at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha and at the Moselle Open in Metz. The current ATP World No. 7 will be making his third career appearance at the season finale. “It’s really important for me to have qualified. With the big four at the moment, it’s not easy to get rewards in tennis, so for me this is one of my rewards. THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE IDENTIFYING OPTIMAL TENNIS BETTING PORTFOLIOS BASED ON VARYING RISK TOLERANCES OF BETTORS NIMAY GODBOLE SPRING 2020 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Finance with honors in Finance Reviewed and approved* by the following: Dr. Robert Novack Associate Professor of Business Logistics Thesis Supervisor Dr. Brian Davis Clinical Assistant Professor of Finance Honors Adviser * Electronic approvals are on file. i ABSTRACT This thesis assesses the risk versus return relationship in tennis betting among the different tournaments that exist within the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour, the main men’s tennis governing body. To do so, betting data is gathered from a website well-known for this data collection, http://www.tennis-data.co.uk/. The purpose of this thesis is to identify optimal betting portfolios for bettors with varying levels of risk aversion. Expected returns and standard deviations of Grand Slam, Masters 1000, ATP 500, and ATP 250 tournaments were analyzed to create an optimal risky portfolio using Markowtiz’s Portfolio Theory. Once that was created, optimal betting portfolios were created by betting a portion of the money in the tennis betting market and investing the rest in Vanguard’s Prime Money Market Fund, VMMXX. The key finding is significant; at a risk aversion level of A = 4, the portfolio yields a return of 11.02 percent and a standard deviation of 15.02 percent, which is a higher return and lower standard deviation than the historical average of the S&P 500.

On that day in 2015, the top seed was upset by 6-foot-11 Ivo Karlovic. Undeterred, Djokovic has reached the final in all 15 tournaments that he has played thereafter, the longest finals streak since Roger Federer appeared in 17 straight from to June 2005 to August 2006. Djokovic would inch within one of Federer’s mark with a win over No. 8 seed Leonardo Mayer on Thursday and another in the semi-finals on Friday. Like Djokovic, Rafael Nadal was eliminated early at the 2015 Qatar ExxonMobil Open, suffering a first-round loss to qualifier Michael Berrer. Unlike Djokovic, Nadal is looking to end – not extend – a streak this week. The No. 2 seed has gone 18 hard-court tournaments since winning his last title on the surface, which came at Doha in 2014. In Thursday’s quarter-finals, Nadal faces 79th-ranked Andrey Kuznetsov, whom he defeated in straight sets at Roland Garros last May.
