Are you new? Welcome! Letter from our Pastor

Dear Friends in Christ,

A few weeks ago in my bulletin column I mentioned Pius XI’s en- cyclical on racism that was never published because he died before it saw the light of day. This underrated pontiff knew all too well that the Europe of the 1920s and 30s was coming apart at the seams with fascism, nationalism, communism and socialism. While he bravely denounced the social ills of the day, he did much more than just write and talk about them. He prayed over them, and even gave the entire Church a new feast which would be a vehicle for teaching truths about the public order.

The Feast of was instituted in 1925 with the powerful Quas primas (https:// www.papalencyclicals.net/pius11/p11prima.htm). Pius chose the last Saturday of October for the feast, and it was associated with the much older celebrations of All Saints and All Souls in November to remind peo- ple that the Church has three forms: the Church Militant here on earth (Christ the King), the Church Tri- umphant in heaven (All Saints) and the Church Suffering in Purgatory (All Souls). This Triduum of feasts re- minded Catholics that, even though we are not of the world, we are still in the world, and that we have a duty to take our place in the public square and transform the society of wherever we live with the principles of the Gospel. This feast, and the encyclical which proclaims it, is a powerful corrective to those various ideologies that deceived people into believing that political orders could or should stand while destroying human life by racial injustice, economic coercion or eugenics. The message of this feast is just as relevant today as it was then, and I urge you to read the encyclical before you go out to vote on 3 November.

In 1970, the liturgical reform transferred the Feast of Christ the King to the last Sunday of the , as the crown of . There was a deliberate attempt to reinterpret the feast away from the engagement of the Church Militant in this world to emphasize the eschatological aspect of the Church: namely, that the reign of Christ will not be fully realized ever in this valley of tears, and will be accomplished only at the end of time, when Christ comes as the Judge of the Living and the Dead. Now, both aspects of this feast (the temporal and the eternal) are valid. Because our parish is named after the Prince of Peace, this feast of the sovereignty of Christ has particular meaning. Since we have both forms of the , we celebrate both dates, which is a great opportunity to reflect on the various levels of meaning this feasts occasions for us all.

feast of sts simon and jude 28 October: Feast of Saints Simon and Jude. Today the Church celebrates the feast of Saints Simon and Jude whose names occur together in the Canon of the Mass. These Apostles of Jesus were both early missionaries of the Church. Saint Jude, also named Judas Thaddaeus or just Thaddaeus, had the abbreviated forename of “Jude” to be clearly distinguished from Judas Iscariot. Saint Jude was the Apostle who asked the Lord at the Last Supper why He had manifested Himself only to His disciples and not to the whole world (John 14:22). Tradition holds that Saint Jude preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Syria, Mesopotamia and Libya. The Apos- tles Jude and Bartholomew are believed to have been the first to bring Christianity to Armenia. St. Bridget of Sweden and St. Ber- nard had visions from God in which they were shown St. Jude as “The Patron Saint of the Impossible.” Saint Simon, also known as Simon the Zealot or Simon the Canaanite, was one of the most ob- scure among the apostles of Jesus. Not much is known about him; but he is thought to have been a fisher- man. Born at Cana in Galilee, St. Simon was surnamed the Zealot because of his affiliation with “the Zeal- ots” (a Jewish political party in opposition to pagan Rome). After , Simon preached the Gospel in Persia, Asian Minor, and Egypt. He joined St. Jude in Syria and they were martyred there together. Simon is represented in art with a saw, the instrument of his martyrdom. Ancient tradition says St. Simon was sawed in half and St. Jude was beheaded with an axe. Saint Simon is the patron saint of curriers, sawyers, sawmen and tanners. Saint Jude is the patron saint of desperate situations, lost or impossible causes, hospitals and hospital workers.

Prayer O God, who by the blessed Apostles have brought us to acknowledge your name, graciously grant, through the intercession of Saints Simon and Jude, that the Church may constantly grow by increase of the peoples who believe in you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (from The Roman Missal)

Ideas for celebrating this feast day at home: • An idea for making “Apostle Cookies” can be found here. • Recipes for Egyptian foods (remembering the work these saints did in Egypt) can be found here. Another recipe for Koshari (an Egyptian comfort food) is here. As a nod to Simon the fisherman, fish would be another fitting menu idea for today. • Remembering the zeal and missionary work of Saints Jude and Simon, discuss these questions around your family table: What does service to Christ mean? How can each of us serve others in the name of Jesus? What small sacrifices can we make for the happiness of others? Can we work together toward a common good as Simon and Jude did? • In honor of Saint Jude and his powerful intercession, make a family “Prayer Board” – a place where eve- ryone in the family can put prayer requests in a visible spot. Prayer board ideas here. • Pray a novena to St. Jude: bring him your biggest, most stressful concerns. • The word apostle means ‘one sent on a mission’ or ‘a person who first advocates an important belief.’ How can you be a Christian apostle? Use this feast day as a reminder to boldly share your faith; possibly with someone you already know.

All Hallow’s Eve:

In England, saints or holy people are called "hallowed” (deriving from the Old English word meaning holy or sanctified). Hence the name “All Hallows’ Day” for the Feast of All Saints. The evening before the feast be- came popularly known as “All Hallows' Eve” or even shorter, “Hallowe'en”. Many recipes and traditions have come down for this evening, such as pancakes, boxty bread, barm- brack (Irish fruit bread), colcannon (cabbage and boiled potatoes). This was also known as “Nutcrack Night” in England, where family gathered around the hearth to enjoy cider, nuts, and apples. “Soul cakes” are another traditional food. People would go begging for a “soul cake” and in exchange would promise to pray for the donor’s departed friends and family: an early version of today’s “Trick or Treat.”

Catholic Facts…..Did you know???

• The true substance of Halloween belongs to the Catholic Church. • Halloween is a derivative of All Hallow's Eve. It is the vigil of All Saints (All Hallows) Day. All Saints Day is a , and thus a major feast on the Church's liturgical calendar. • Halloween is indeed connected with All Saints Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls Day (Nov. 2). These three days together are the "Days of the Dead," a triduum of feasts also called , Hallowtide, or Hallowmas ("Hallow" means to honor as holy). • Halloween is, therefore, the first day of Allhallowtide, the time of year when the living (i.e. the Church Militant) honor all the dead in Christ: the saints in heaven (i.e. the Church Triumphant) as well as all the holy souls detained in purgatory on their way to heaven (i.e. the Church Suffering). It is a beautiful cele- bration of the Communion of Saints! • Catholics historically believed that on these "Days of the Dead," the veil between heaven, hell, and pur- gatory is the thinnest. • Halloween begins the celebration of these Christian holy days to remind the Faithful of the reality of heaven and hell; the saints and the damned; demons and angels; and the holy souls suffering in purgato- ry. • In the year 844 A.D. Pope Gregory III transferred the Feast of All Saints (which particularly honors the unknown martyrs and "hidden" saints whom we do not know by name) from its former day of May 13th to November 1st to coincide with the foundation of a chapel in St. Peter's Basilica which he dedi- cated to all the saints in heaven. His successor, Pope Gregory IV, extended the feast of the dedication to the universal Church. • In medieval times, churches often displayed the bones and relics of their saints on Halloween (i.e. the vigil of All Saints Day) for public veneration. • Halloween is a Catholic holiday and does not have origins in paganism, Samhain, Celtic/Druidic festivals, the occult, or Satanism. This common misconception is modern anti-Catholic propaganda, with roots going back to the Protestant Reformation, and has no basis in historical fact. • To avoid superstition and negative evil influences, Halloween should not be honored or celebrated apart from Catholic truth. (In the same way, we should keep the birth of Christ at the center of Christ- mas, and the Resurrection of Christ at the center of ). • Halloween is a day to reflect on Christ's triumph over sin, death, and Satan; to meditate on our own mortality and duties to God; to shun sin and the devil; to give honor to the saints in heaven; and to pray for the souls of the faithful departed in purgatory. And, of course, to have fun with joyful feasting and merriment.
