The Olympic 500M Speed Skating
448 Statistica Neerlandica (2010) Vol. 64, nr. 4, pp. 448–459 doi:10.1111/j.1467-9574.2010.00457.x The Olympic 500-m speed skating; the inner–outer lane difference Richard Kamst Department of Operations, University of Groningen, PO Box 800, 9700 AV Groningen, The Netherlands Gerard H. Kuper Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance, University of Groningen, PO Box 800, 9700 AV Groningen, The Netherlands Gerard Sierksma* Department of Operations, University of Groningen, PO Box 800, 9700 AV Groningen, The Netherlands In 1998, the International Skating Union and the International Olympic Committee decided to skate the 500-m twice during World Single Distances Championships, Olympic Games, and World Cups. The decision was based on a study by the Norwegian statistician N. L. Hjort, who showed that in the period 1984–1994, there was a signifi- cant difference between 500-m times skated with a start in the inner and outer lanes. Since the introduction of the clap skate in the season 1997–1998, however, there has been a general feeling that this differ- ence is no longer significant. In this article we show that this is, in fact, the case. Keywords and Phrases: sports, clap skate, statistics. 1 Inner–outer lane problem A 500-m speed skating race is performed by pairs of skaters. A draw decides whether a skater starts in either the inner or the outer lane of the 400-m rink; see Figure 1. After the first curve, skaters change lanes at the ‘crossing line’. The second curve is the major cause of the difference in time between inner and outer starts. -

The large 400m ice rink which is situated in the Coastal Cluster has a capacity of 8000 and is the equivalent of three football fields laid end to end, with the overall area of the three tracks equivalent to three ice hockey rinks. There are 179 competitors from 23 countries listed and with six Ladies’ and six Men’s Speed Skating Events at the Olympics, Speed Skating is one of the world’s most medaled Winter Olympic sports, but the race to the podium is high-paced and a hundredth of a second can separate gold from silver. Today will feature the 5000m, where Sven Kramer is the favorite for the gold. The defending Olympic champion seldom gets beaten. He will skate in the 10th pair today and will set the pace before his closest rivals take to the ice. Jorrit Bergsma (NED) is a strong contender for a medal. Jan Blokhuijsen (NED) is another favorite and the Netherlands are hoping for a clean sweep in the first speed skating event at Sochi. Before the three Dutchman enter the Adler Arena, Ivan Skobrev and Denis Yuskov (RUS) will try to impress the home crowd. -

Skaters who start in the inner lane on the first day will start in the outer lane on the second day and vice versa to have equal circumstances for everyone. Times are calculated based on the 500m so the 1000m time will be divided by 2 to give points that can be added up to a fair ranking. In such short distances minor mistakes can have grave consequences. The competition will start 17:30 local time on Saturday and 18.30 local time on Sunday. With an altitude of 348 meters, Alau is not a highland rink. Therefore it is unlikely that the Championships record of 148.015 (ladies) and 136.790 (men) set in Nagano’s M-wave will be broken. The current track records date back to 2013, and for the ladies’ sprint distances they are 37.27 (Sang-Hwa Lee, KOR) and 1.14,22 (Heather Richardson, USA) and for the men 34.69 (Keiichiro Nagashima, JPN) and 1:08.66 (Shani Davis, USA). -

In both long distances the track record was broken a few times and a total of six skaters set a personal best. The record for the oldest World Cup participant was broken by Martin Hänggi (SUI). The 46-year-old skated in the 5000m in the B-division. Sven Kramer (NED) take 5000m gold and Aleksandr Rumyantsev (RUS) surprises by taking the silver Olympic Champion Sven Kramer won the 5000m as expected, but Russian Aleksandr Rumyantsev took the silver to avert a much-feared all-Dutch pedestal. Wouter Olde Heuvel (NED) found his way back to the World Cup podium for the first time since 2011. Rumyantsev grabbed his first podium finish when he came third in last season’s final 5000m World Cup race in Heerenveen. The 27-year-old Russian confirmed his status as an elite skater when he left manifold medalist Bob de Jong (NED) 2.4 seconds behind in the fifth pair. Rumyantsev managed to keep his lap times below 30 seconds until the final two laps, where he missed a stroke and tiredness became visible. -
