Gabriele Corsani ABSTRACT Fra l’ultimo scorcio dell’Ottocento e i primi decenni del Novecento Firenze e i suoi dintorni sono il soggetto privilegiato di una grande quantità di descrizioni, note di diario, racconti, opera di scrittori stranieri, in particolare inglesi, che si radicano nell’approdo elettivo di quei luoghi. Il testo presenta la traccia letteraria del paesaggio fiorentino nelle opere di Vernon Lee e Janet Ross, due tipiche rappresentanti di questa tendenza che hanno vissuto, attraverso vicende biografiche in qualche modo parallele, un’esperienza di intensa identificazione con il paesaggio fiorentino. Di Janet Ross, viene commentato Old Florence and Modern Tuscany, volume che raccoglie una serie di articoli pubblicati su alcune riviste inglesi e fornisce una efficace panoramica sull’interesse molto concreto di Janet Ross per il mondo rurale che la vede addirittura impegnata nella gestione della fattoria di Castagnolo, a Lastra a Signa. Più sfaccettato è il commento alle opere di Vernon Lee, di cui sono commentati passi da Vanitas. Polite Stories, Genius Loci, Hortus Vitae and Limbo, in virtù della maggiore ampiezza e complessità del suo mondo culturale. George Meredith and His Circle: Intellectual Communities and Literary Networks List of Conference Abstracts (by panel) Panel A: Meredith and Literary Circles Tom Ue (University of Oxford & University College London, UK), ‘Gissing, Meredith, and the Intellectual’ “Tough” and “genius” are terms with which Meredith and his novels have been characterized by contemporary novelists and critics ranging as widely as Gissing and Conan Doyle. This paper will analyse Gissing’s writing on Meredith with the aim of exploring how Meredith’s difficulty and his intellectualism operate as an informing presence for Gissing and his contemporaries. The two writers met at the beginning of Gissing’s literary career when he had sent the manuscript to The Unclassed to Chapman & Hall: he was invited to discuss it with the publisher’s reader, and it was only later that evening when Gissing learns, from Frederic Harrison, that he had been discussing the novel with Meredith. Gissing values Meredith’s judgment in literary matters, and as he writes to his brother Algernon on 12 June 1884: “It is an excellent thing to have got his good word [about The Unclassed]. His own novels are of the superlatively tough species (almost matching Harbottle chops.) See, for instance, the beginning of ‘Diana’ in the current Fortnightly” (CL 2: 223). And on 23 June 1884: “And do not lose out of sight the fact that a man like Meredith can wholly praise this book [The Unclassed], a man whose own writing has nothing whatever ‘offensive’ in it, but yet is deeply intellectual” (CL 2: 228). With close attention to Gissing’s correspondence and his diary—their friendship last until the end of Gissing’s lifetime—this paper demonstrates how Meredith operates, paradoxically, as both a source of inspiration and a model from which Gissing ultimately moves away. -

NINETEENTH-CENTURY GENDER STUDIES ISSUE 11.3 (WINTER 2015) Special Issue: Relations: Literary Marketplaces, Affects, and Bodies of 18th- and 19th-Century Women Writers Guest Edited by Julia Fuller, Meechal Hoffman, and Livia Arndal Woods “Ashamed of the Inkpot”: Virginia Woolf, Lucy Clifford, and the Literary Marketplace By Mary Jean Corbett, Miami University The literary and artistic world is so ordered that those who enter it have an interest in disinterestedness. —Pierre Bourdieu, “The Field of Cultural Production, or: The Economic World Reversed” <1> Most critics working in the contested terrain of fin-de-siècle literary and cultural history would agree that Virginia Woolf’s essays, reviews, and first two novels diminished the achievements of both the male and female writers of that era. The version of literary history she knew—and, indeed, helped to construct—is far less varied, progressive, or inclusive than that constructed by scholars over the last several decades, in which the reaction against “Victorianism,” for instance, is seen to be already well under way at least a generation before the queen’s demise. Still, the motivating factors in this erasure have yet to be fully explored. It’s my belief that rethinking Woolf’s relationship to the immediate past in relation to new narratives about late-Victorian literary culture can lead us to new conclusions about where and how Woolf does or does not borrow from, resist, reframe, or reject the legacies of her precursors. As I’ve argued elsewhere, the active disavowal of what I call second-generation Victorian women writers, while certainly shaped in part by her familial context, is but one facet of Woolf’s broader and deeper drive to establish relations with an earlier, “greater” Victorian generation while bypassing an intermediate and, to her mind, imperfect one (Corbett). -

Si trattava di una coesa compagine che veniva a formare sorta una sorta di pacifica colonia che della “Mother Country” manteneva la lingua, gli usi e i costumi, ma ibridandoli in misure diverse con quelli fiorentini; al punto da dare origine al neologismo “Anglo-fiorentini,” termine nel quale si compendia un’identità multipla: da un lato il debito nei confronti delle radici britanniche o americane, dall’altro la sopravvenuta inscindibilità dell’appartenenza a Firenze.1 Alcuni “Anglo-fiorentini,” pur soggiornando a lungo a Firenze, vissero ospiti in casa d’altri, o in pensioni. -

Redemptive Portrayals of the Fallen Woman in Nineteenth Century British Sensation Fiction Hannah Lacey Bryant Rigby “A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature.” Chapel Hill 2011 Approved by: Dr. Laurie Langbauer Dr. Allan Life Dr. Thomas Reinert Dr. Beverly Taylor Dr. James Thompson © 2011 Hannah Lacey Bryant Rigby ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT HANNAH LACEY BRYANT RIGBY: Redemptive Portrayals of the Fallen Woman in Nineteenth Century British Sensation Fiction (Under the direction of Laurie Langbauer) A study of portrayals of fallenness in the nineteenth-century sensation novels, including those written by Wilkie Collins, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and Ouida, my dissertation locates the genre of sensation fiction front and center in allotting its heroines— bigamists, prostitutes, and the divorced—a potential for redemption unavailable to their counterparts in realist fiction. Novels became best-selling sensations because of their risqué subject material, predominantly their positioning of women in places of power, even sexual power; content—which created a sensation in the titillated reader—became synonymous with this literary form. The sensation novelists were under no compunction to reiterate overwrought clichés to argue for a correspondence between sexual purity and moral goodness like their more conventional and canonical counterparts. I argue that because sensation novels allow sexual and powerful women admission into the institution of marriage, all the while insisting their fallen heroines’ moral fitness to be wives, the novels actively challenged Victorian ideals of femininity and female virtue and in doing so became a crucial component in the unmasking of nineteenth-century sexual hypocrisy. -

There are, however, additional biographies of authors not included in the sample or in Bevis' list. An asterisk indicates authors in the sample. *Amherst, Baroness Mary Rothes Margaret Cecil (1857-1919), trav eller, amateur archaeologist and collector of Egyptian antiquities. Eldest daughter of Lord Amherst and Margaret Susan Mitford; married Lord William Cecil. Margaret Cecil occasionally published in the Annales du Service des Antiquities. She is best known for her travel-book, Birds Notes from the Nile (1904). *Arbuthnot, Lady Ann (n.d., 1882), traveller, daughter of Field marshal Sir John Fitzgerald; married Sir Robert Arbuthnot; lived intermittently in Egypt. 'Lady Arbuthnot chamber' inside the Great Pyramid, at Gizah, is named after her. *Baillie, E. L. C. (n.d.), traveller and writer of religious tracts and prescriptive books, toured the Middle East in the 1870s and published A Sale to Smyrna, or an Englishwoman's journal, based on her travels (1873). Baker, Florence (n.d.), explorer, wife of Samuel Baker- discoverer of the Nile's sources, and gold medalist of the Royal Geographical Society. Born in Hungary as Florence Ninian Von Sass; married Baker in 1865 (legend has it that he bought her at a slave-market, somewhere in the Balkans). Joined him on the voyage to Albert Nyanza, which they discovered together. *Beaufort, Emily Anne, Lady Strangford (n.d., 1887), traveller, philanthropist, nurse and hospital reformer, wife of Percy E. F. W. Sydney Smythe, eighth viscount of Strangford, oriental scholar, and expert on the Balkans. -
