  • 371 – March 2018 (2)
THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Shaun Udal James Tomlinson NEWSLETTER No. 371 – MARCH 2018 (2) Wednesday 28 March 2018 – Meeting The society extends a warm welcome to this evening’s speaker, Adrian Aymes, on his return to the Society. He first addressed members in September 2000, during his benefit year. ADRIAN NIGEL AYMES was born in Southampton on 4 June 1964, and attended Bellemoor School. He came late to first-class cricket. He joined the Hampshire staff when 21 years of age in 1986 but did not gain a regular place until he finally displaced Bob Parks some four years later. He gave notice of what was to follow on his first-class debut against Surrey at The Oval in 1987. With Hampshire in trouble, he battled to 58 not out. Subsequently, no player in the first-class game during the 1990s sold his wicket more dearly. He was undefeated in a high proportion of his innings, which spoke volumes for his technique, temperament and sheer cussedness. With Robin Smith, he became the beating heart and consciousness of the Hampshire batting. If he took root and dug in, Hampshire were generally assured of a competitive total. All of his eight centuries were made in adversity. Of all Hampshire’s wicket-keepers, only his successor, Nic Pothas, has a higher batting average. He was a passionately proud professional, and never gave less than his best. He was fortunate to keep wicket to two of the genuinely great bowlers in the history of the game. At the start of his career, he stood back to the incomparable Malcolm Marshall; latterly, he kept to the unique Shane Warne.

  • 285 - November 2008
THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No. 285 - NOVEMBER 2008 Wednesday 12 November 2008 – Meeting This year’s beneficiary, JOHN CRAWLEY, makes a welcome return to the Society this evening. His first visit was in October 2005 when members enjoyed a most pleasant evening in his company. John Crawley has endeared himself to Hampshire supporters during his seven years with the County. He has reinforced his penchant for making high scores by being the only batsman in the County’s history to record two triple centuries, both at the expense of the Nottinghamshire bowlers. He made 301 not out at Trent Bridge in 2005 and then followed it up with an unbeaten 311 at The Rose Bowl a year later. Virtually all Hampshire supporters felt it was a great pity that Shane Warne declared when our speaker was tantalisingly close to Dick More’s record 316 for the County. When he last spoke to us he felt that the former innings was the best crafted and that, in respect of the latter, the emphasis had to be on winning the match, which Hampshire duly did. Moreover, he made 272 on his Hampshire debut at Canterbury in 2002; he has therefore recorded three of the six highest innings for the County. All three innings are the highest made for Hampshire in the last 70 years – a phenomenal achievement. He might even have made a triple century in the latter innings but was unluckily run out at the non-striker’s end when a Shaun Udal drive was deflected on to the stumps by Min Patel.

THE HA$flPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No. 33S - SUMMER 2014 PETER SAINSBURY TRIBUTE Photograph by lnnes Marlow Members will be aware that Peter Sainsbury died on 12 July, aged 80. Few men served Hampshire for so long. As player and then coach he was with Hampshire for a remarkable 38-year period. For a whole generation born in those years following \n //2, he was a virtual ever-present in their cricket watching lives. He made 758 appearances for Hampshire in first-class and limited overs cricket, a figure exceeded only by David Turner (791). Peter James Sainsbury was born in Chandlers Ford on 13 June 1934 and attended Bitteme Park School in Southampton. He made his Hampshire debut against Oxford University at The Parks in 1954 whilst on National Service. He had, in fact, been chosen for Hampshire a year earlier but he could not be released from his service duties. From the moment he left the army, until his retirement in 1976, he was a constant presence on the Hampshire scene as the County's first choice all-rounder. He was not a bits and pieces all-rounder; he was the genuine article, a man able to hold down a place as a batsman or bowler. He was a slow left-arm bowler who teased batsmen with drift, flight and changes of pace, a shrewd middle-order right- handed batsman who was always at his best in a crisis, and a quite magnificent fielder, particularly at backward short-leg. After his playing days, he was the county's coach until 1991.

THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No. 289 - MARCH 2009 MEETINGS Wednesday 11 March 2009 – Meeting Tonight’s speaker is the REVEREND CANON ALAN HAYDOCK. He is a member of the Nottinghamshire General Committee. He was ordained in the clergy on 13 June 1965 and was a minister for 42 years, 26 of which he spent serving the Borough of Rushcliffe. He has always been an enthusiastic cricketer. A left-handed batsman and wicket-keeper, he played over 300 games for Club and Clergy. Among his other activities are supporting Notts. Canon Haydock has visited a number of Cricket Societies this winter and the Society extends a warm welcome for his visit to Hampshire tonight. His address will be preceded by the Society’s Annual General Meeting. Wednesday 7 January 2009 – Report The evening in the company of Bob Herman and Richard Lewis was almost worthy of a book. As David Fish mentioned in his vote of thanks, the evening was akin to a warm fireside chat in the company of friends. The two ex- Hampshire cricketers spoke for over an hour and a half and one feels that, if time permitted, they would still be going some twelve hours later as the editor has sat down to draft his report.
