  • 5.07: “Separation of Powers” Guest: Michael Hyatt [Intro Music]
The West Wing Weekly 5.07: “Separation of Powers” Guest: Michael Hyatt [Intro Music] JOSH: You're listening to The West Wing Weekly. I'm Joshua Malina HRISHI: And I’m Hrishikesh Hirway, and today we're talking about Separation of Powers; it's episode seven from season five. JOSH: This episode was written by Paul Redford and directed by Alex Graves. It first aired on November twelfth in the year 2003. So this is interesting - Paul Redford was involved with Sports Night and then he was involved with West Wing, both of these as a producer, for a long time. He had many co-written credits on The West Wing prior to this; this is his first solo writing credit. It must be very freeing to have worked with Aaron, and for Aaron, and on this staff in the collaborative way they did in providing material for Aaron to ultimately write things; then all of a sudden to be handed the reins and say, “OK go ahead now...now it's your turn.” HRISHI: Yeah, it's like Scottie Pippen after Jordan left the Bulls. Coming up later in this episode we're going to be joined by special guest Michael Hyatt who plays Angela Blake. So there are three main stories in this episode; there's a budget stalemate between the White House and the congressional Republican leaders, the negotiation is being handled by Angela Blake and Toby’s not too happy about it and she needs some additional help to get the work done and she manages to get Donna on her team.

  • Talk Nerdymichael Hyatt May Not Be a Name That You Recognize from Any
Michael Hyatt may not be a name that you recognize from any of the shows that you may watch, but it should be. Michael is a unique individual with a lot of positive energy who is very passionate about what she does. She was born in England to Jamaican parents and comes from a family of entertainers. In the past, you may have seen her in Dharma & Greg, The West Wing, Ally McBeal, 24, Veronica Mars, Grey’s Anatomy, ER, The Big Bang Theory, Criminal Minds, Bones, Medium, Glee, The Mindy Project, Castle, Shameless, True Detective, Ray Donovan and more. In the midst of her busy schedule, she took the time to speak with us about her recurring role on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend as Dr. Akopian, the therapist that main character, Rebecca Bunch, turns to when absolutely nothing is going her way. I have to ask…how’d you get your name? “(laughs) It’s funny. I got it when I was in high school and I was an avid fan, a Michael Jackson fan, and my friends would call me Michael. And I liked it, so I kept it. That’s it. That’s all it is.” That is awesome! I knew there had to be a story. “I like being different. I’m not a very traditional person. I just really liked the weirdness of it.” Understood. So what made you decide to get into acting? “Acting has been in my blood. It’s just who I was supposed to be or what I was supposed to do.

  • 'Snowfall' (And 'West Wing' and 'Wire') Actress Michael Hyatt by Stacy Lambe 11:30 AM PDT, July 5, 2017
FEATURES Why You Should Know 'Snowfall' (and 'West Wing' and 'Wire') Actress Michael Hyatt By Stacy Lambe 11:30 AM PDT, July 5, 2017 Photo: Getty Images Playing tough-loving single mother Cissy Saint on Snowfall, filmmaker John Singleton’s new drama about the origins of the crack epidemic in America, Michael Hyatt got the part the way she’s gotten countless others: Auditioning. “I’m a working actor,” Hyatt tells ET. The explanation is so matter-of-fact that the question of how she got the role on the new FX series almost seems ridiculous -- but that’s to say she sees it that way. The opportunity for the part came along and “I auditioned for it.” Such is the life of Hyatt, who has built an acting career largely filled with playing familiar faces on various award- winning TV series. There’s Angela Blake on season five of The West Wing, Brianna Barksdale on The Wire, Judge Sheffield on Franklin & Bash, Katherine Davis on the second installment of True Detective, Det. Muncie on Ray Donovan and Dr. Akopian on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, who was most recently seen on the season two episode “Can Josh Take a Leap of Faith?” Ad “The majority of my career has been doing these recurring roles,” Hyatt says, acknowledging that it’s every actor’s dream to work consistently (or “be a series regular”). But she’s grateful for the work that she does get. “I know lots of people who would love to be where I am,” she says, adding that it hasn’t come without its disappointments or struggles.

  • TV's Hardest Working Actress
Michael Hyatt: TV’s Hardest Working Actress Samantha Ofole-Prince, Caribpress News-Magazine, Interview, 06/13/16 Hyatt plays detective Sheila Muncie on the Showtime series “Ray Donovan.” If Michael Hyatt’s face is a familiar one, it’s because you’ve seen her in several television dramas. Whether it’s “The Wire,” “Shameless,” “Castle,” “CSI,” “Dexter,” “The West Wing” “True Detective,” “Ray Donovan” or more recently belting out a song on the musical comedy “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” she is television’s hardest working actress having been on more than 50 shows. “I am a limitless energy,” laughs the genial performer who we caught up via phone from her Los Angeles home. “There’s a lot of stuff I have learned from the women that I’ve played and there are aspects of these women in me,” says Hyatt actress whose screen roles have largely been authoritarian. “If there is a role that’s offered to me that doesn’t speak to my spirit I just don’t do it.” On CW’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” Hyatt plays the unconventional Dr. Akopian, a straight-laced no nonsense doc who is always armed with a dose of reality for her patients. “She’s very hippy on page, is very liberal and very clear. She is not the kind of doctor that would prescribe medication to get over what it is you are going through, but wants to talk about it,” shares the actress who carefully seeks out her screen roles. “I am not so interested in the type of character, but in the story that is being told and the message and overall writing of the character and story.
