PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Religious studies . Psychology . “A term used since the early 1970s to designate a subgenre of hard rock music…. During the 1960s, British hard rock bands and the American guitarist Jimi Hendrix developed a more distorted guitar sound and heavier drums and bass that led to a separation of heavy metal from other blues-based rock. Albums by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple in 1970 codified the new genre, which was marked by distorted guitar ‘power chords’, heavy riffs, wailing vocals and virtuosic solos by guitarists and drummers. During the 1970s performers such as AC/DC, Judas Priest, Kiss and Alice Cooper toured incessantly with elaborate stage shows, building a fan base for an internationally-successful style.” (Grove Music Online, “Heavy metal”) . “Heavy metal fans became known as ‘headbangers’ on account of the vigorous nodding motions that sometimes mark their appreciation of the music.” (Grove Music Online, “Heavy metal”) . Although known among die-hard, underground metal fans, Lilker's influence has been significant across many genres. From his signature heavily distorted bass tone to his unquenchable thirst to create forward- thinking, aggressive music, Lilker's musical drive has seen him at the forefront of New York hardcore, crossover, thrash, grindcore, and black metal. Perpetual Conversion is culled from extensive interviews conducted by author Dave Hofer with Lilker, his family, his peers, and his bandmates past and present, including personal accounts from Craig Setari of Sick of It All, Barney Greenway of Napalm Death, Dave Witte of Municipal Waste, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Gene Hoglan of Death/Dark Angel, Kevin Sharp of Brutal Truth, Digby Pearson of Earache Records, Fenriz of Darkthrone, Chris Reifert of Death/Autopsy, rapper Necro, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, Jacob Bannon of Converge, and many others. In addition, the book is supplemented with excerpts from historic interviews, key reviews, and dozens of previously unseen images.

LOUIS" FROM NEW YORK TO PARIS TEN YEARS AGO— HOW TO BUILD A SCALE MODEL OF LINDY'S PLANE By Jesse Davidson ON MAY 20-21 the entire aviation world commemorates the tenth anniversary of Charles A. Lindbergh's solo flight from New York to Paris. MODEL AIRPLANE NEWS also celebrates this anniversary by presenting plans and instructions for building a replica of this historic plane. * * * Ten years ago a mortal became a god— the god of the skies. Winging his solitary way from New York to Paris on May 20-21, 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh gave to aviation the momentum it had been waiting for, the impetus which only daring, courage and success can give. At the same time there came to a disillusioned people, spiritually starving on a post-war diet of sensationalism and rapidly changing morals, a manna of old fashioned virtue and character which Charles A. Lindbergh embodied, and to this young man a jaded, cynical, money-mad people gave heartfelt thanks for redeeming virtues it had discarded, and made of him a god. Aviation throughout the world was making normal progress during the post-war period when suddenly, it was jerked out of its horse-and-buggy pace.
