He is one of two head men’s basketball coaches with doctorates, joining Lehigh’s Brett Reed. Education He was introduced as the 18th head coach in the 79-year history of Explorer men's B.A., Psychology, North Central (1984) basketball on August 23, 2004. The late-summer appointment made recruiting efforts M.Ed, Physical Education, North Texas (1986) impossible, leaving Giannini with a team consisting of only a handful of available scholar- Ph.D., Illinois, Kinesiology, (1992) ship players for most of the season. Giannini quickly turned La Salle into a conference contender as two years later in 2005-06, the Explorers posted their most wins (18) in 14 years and a third place finish in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the school's highest showing since it joined the league for the 1995-96 season. The 18-10 finish set records for most Atlantic 10 wins in a season (10), most Atlantic 10 road wins in a single season (four) and delivered a winning season to the La Salle com- munity for the first time since the 1992-93 season. For his efforts, Giannini was named a Jim Phelan Award candidate for National Coach of the Year. Giannini followed that impressive performance by recruiting one of the deepest and most highly-regarded incoming classes which included five freshmen who would have an immediate impact on the program. The Explorers experienced growing pains as five of the top seven players in the 2006-07 rotation were freshman. That group meshed together in 2008-09, winning 18 games and finishing in the top half of the Atlantic 10 for the third time in four seasons. La Salle entered 2009-10 with high expectations, including a preseason fourth pick in the Atlantic 10 coaches poll, but injuries decimated the roster. Seniors Ruben Guillandeaux, Kimmani Barrett and Yves Mekongo missed a combined 46 games and the Explorers over 2,800 points on the bench were the most sidelined in the nation at one time. In 2010-11, the Explorers were one of eight A-10 teams to make it to Atlantic City, N.J. for the conference tournament and for the fourth time in the previous five years placed a player on the A-10 All-Rookie team. Academics and community service are also tenets of Giannini's coaching philosophy. Mekongo and Steve Weingarten have earned the past two Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year awards. Mekongo was also a two-time Academic All-American and NACDA I-AAA Scholar Athlete of the Year, while Weingarten earned Academic All-District recognition twice. La Salle was the only team in the country to have two players named to the NACDA I-AAA Scholar-Athlete Team in Mekongo and Weingarten. 2011-12 LA SALLE EXPLORERS No. Name Cl. Pos. Ht. Wt. He was inducted into the CONSECUTIVE DOUBLE-FIGURE Philadelphia Big 5 and La Salle Hall of Athletes in 2010. SCORING GAMES EXPLORERS PLAYING OVERSEAS Player La Salle has several players competing overseas. Here is the list: Sam Mills...... 4 Ukraine: Earl Pettis ...... 4 Rodney Green, Vernon Goodridge Devon White ...... 1 Spain: Yves Mekongo, WEEKLY AWARDS Ruben Guillandeaux, Kimmani Barrett Greece: Steven Smith Tyreek Duren Germany: Jerrell Williams Atlantic 10 Honor Roll (11/14, 11/21) Denmark: Mike St. John Big 5 Honor Roll (11/21) WHY ARE WE THE EXPLORERS? La Salle University’s nickname—the Explorers—was announced by the Collegian in March 1932 as the winning entry to a student contest. However, in the fall of 1931, a Baltimore sportswriter covering the La Salle/St. John’s (Md.) football game erroneous- ly alluded to La Salle as being named for the French explorer La Salle, not St. John Baptist de La Salle. Were the two events related? We’ll never know for sure. PHILADELPHIA BIG 5 The Explorers are a proud member of the Philadelphia Big 5, which is comprised of La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph’s, Temple and Villanova. The annual round-robin series is one of the great traditions in Philadelphia sports and college basketball. Big 5 Schedule Nov. 15 at Villanova 76-69, VU Jan. 10 at Penn Feb. 4 vs. Saint Joseph’s (Palestra) Feb. 22 vs. Temple MAKING HIS MARK With 45 Atlantic 10 wins Dr. John Giannini has more Atlantic 10 Conference wins than any other La Salle coach.

GIANNINI AUTHORS BOOK Court Sense, written by Explorers head coach Dr. John Giannini, was released by Human Kinetics, the worldwide leader in publish- ing books on sports and fitness. HK’s catalogue also features other titles from the likes of John Wooden, Pete Newell and others. The book has been released worldwide. The impetus for the book grew from a series of conversations Giannini had with Human Kinetics Vice President Ted Miller, about the poor performance of United States national teams in international competition and the general decline of fundamentals and team play. Notre Dame’s Mike Brey wrote the foreword. WHAT A FALL! It is not basketball related, but La Salle has had an outstanding fall season. Men’s and women’s cross country each won the Atlantic 10 Championship. Women’s soccer won the regular season A-10 title and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Men’s soccer and field hockey both reached the conference tournament, making La Salle the only school with three teams in the A-10 postseason. NEXT UP: NORTHEASTERN After this weekend’s Philly Hoop Group Classic, La Salle will host Northeastern on Wednesday at 7 PM. THE LAST TIME LA SALLE... THE LAST TIME AN EXPLORER...
