DOCUMENT ARTISTIC AWAKENING IN ANKARA (1953)1 BÜLent ecevit Until very recently, we Ankara residents were as jealous of Istanbul’s artistic awareness as we were of its sea and its trees. Our trees have yet to reach maturity, and we are as distant from the sea as ever, but an artistic awakening has now begun in Ankara as well. Concert tickets have begun to sell out in the blink of an eye, as soon as they are available. Curiously enough, tickets to the opening night of the opera reportedly sometimes sell out even before they are released.2 I say “reportedly” because this is a story I heard from one of the people interested in opening nights at the opera. Our opera no longer admits people to the concert hall who are ungroomed or who lack a formal dinner jacket. There are frequent balls at the opera. You’d think you’re in 18th-century Vienna. Because, as far as we know, this kind of dandyism no longer exists in any 20th-century city. But while he performed the first canonisation on U.S. soil in Washington and celebrated mass in front of two million faithful in Philadelphia, the attention focused less on the religious aspects of the trip than on the Pope’s vis- its to the sacred halls of political power. On these occasions, the Pope acted less in the role of head of the Church, and therefore Christian E. Rieck a spiritual one, and more in the role of diplomatic actor. POPE JOHN XXIII AND THE IDEA OF AN ECUMENICAL COUNCIL Joseph A. Komonchak On January 25, 1959, just three months after he had assumed the papacy, Pope John XXIII informed a group of Cardinals at St. Paul's outside the Walls that he intended to convoke an ecumenical council. The announcement appeared towards the end of a speech closing that year's celebration of the Chair of Unity Octave, which the Pope used in order to comment on his initial experiences as Pope and to meet the desire to know the main lines his pontificate would follow.1 The first section offered what might be called a pastoral assessment of the challenges he faced both as Bishop of Rome and as supreme Pastor of the universal Church. The reference to his responsibilities as Bishop of Rome is already significant, given that this local episcopal role had been greatly eclipsed in recent centuries, most of the care for the city having been assigned to a Cardinal Vicar, while the pope focused on universal problems. Shortly after his election, Pope John had told Cardinal Tardini that he intended to be Pope "quatenus episcopus Romae, as Bishop of Rome." With regard to the city, the Pope noted all the changes that had taken place since in the forty years since he had worked there as a young priest. He noted the great growth in the size and population of Rome and the new challenges it placed on those responsible for its spiritual well-being. Turning to the worldwide situation, the Pope briefly noted that there was much to be joyful about. -

TURKISH PRESIDENT TURGUT ÖZAL’S IMPACT ON NURSULTAN NAZARBAYEV’S PERCEPTION OF TURKEY* Nursultan Nazarbayev'ın Türkiye Algısına Tugut Özal'ın Etkisi Din Muhammed AMETBEK** Abstract Nursultan Nazarbayev as the founding President of Kazakhstan played a determinant role in the formation of Kazakh foreign policy. In this respect, the article examines Nazarbayev’s perception of Turkey as a decision maker in foreign policy are based on observation rather than realities. Nazarbayev is aware of the fact that the national identity of Kazakhstan is divided between two competing poles; Russian and Kazakh, in a broader sense; Slavic and Turkic. From this perspective, Nazarbayev’s perception of Turkey is significant as it is not only related to foreign policy but at the same time the national identity of Kazakhstan. The study argues that the President of Republic of Turkey of early 1990s Turgut Özal with his active diplomacy towards Kazakhstan contributed to the positive image of Turkey. The research concludes that close and reliable relations between Nazarbayev and Özal became the basis of a strategic part- nership between Kazakhstan and Turkey. The in vivo stability of PBN is very low and when administered systemically, it has a mean plasma half life of about three hours. Therefore, formulations which are able to prolong the plasma residence time of PBN are of major interest, because oxygen radicals are usually continuously formed under pathologi- cal conditions. -

Australian eJournal of Theology 8 (October 2006) Divine Discontent: Betty Friedan and Pope John XIII in Conversation Sophie McGrath RSM Abstract: This paper is about ideas, values and attitudes in the turbulent times of the 1960s. It brings into conversation the feminist Betty Friedan and Pope John XIII in critiquing contemporary academic disciplines as well as authority, feminism, marriage, relationships between men and women, motherhood, the family, sexuality, and human dignity. It juxtaposes a secular and a Catholic tradition. Though the literary devise of the dinner party is used to facilitate the participants speaking in their own words and to highlight their humanity, this essay is essentially an academic exercise. It is designed to challenge readers to reconsider popular perceptions of feminism and the papacy in general and Betty Friedan and Pope John XXIII in particular.1 Key Words: Betty Frieden; John XXIII; feminism and Catholicism; The Feminine Mystique; gender relations; sexuality; authority; family life he period of prosperity accompanying post-war reconstruction in Europe, USA and the Pacific area in the late 1940s and into the 1950s brought with it a consumer culture generated by technological advances in industry. Factories churned out the goods and the burgeoning advertising industry, through newspaper, radio and TV, influenced the buying habits and life-style of the public. The prominent philosophy of atheistic existentialism encouraged an ever-increasing challenging of authority. In the post-war period of prosperity the West was less threatened by the menace of communism at home, but the aggressive foreign policy of Russia generated considerable fear among both secular and Church leaders.
