Lying and Asserting Andreas Stokke — penultimate version, published in Journal of Philosophy, CX(1), 2013, 33–60 — Abstract The paper argues that the correct definition of lying is that to lie is to assert some- thing one believes to be false, where assertion is understood in terms of the notion of the common ground of a conversation. It is shown that this definition makes the right pre- dictions for a number of cases involving irony, joking, and false implicature. In addition, the proposed account does not assume that intending to deceive is a necessary condition on lying, and hence counts so-called bald-faced lies as lies. 1 Introduction This paper argues for a definition of lying. The definition is that you lie when you assert something you believe to be false. This definition is not new, and many philosophers have held it. Yet these proposals differ from each other in relying on different views of assertion. I argue that the account of assertion needed to define lying is the one familiar from the work of Stalnaker (1978), (1998), (2002) according to which to assert that p is to propose that p become common ground. So my definition of lying is that you lie when you say something you believe to be false and thereby propose that it become common ground. Traditionally, many philosophers – e.g., Augustine (1952 [395]b), Bok (1978), Williams (2002), Frankfurt (2005 [1986]) – have defined lying as saying what you believe to be false with the intent to deceive. But as pointed out by Carson (2006), Sorensen (2007), Fallis (2009), and others, this definition fails to do justice to the phenomenon of what Sorensen calls bald- faced lies. -

Rule 801(a) de- fines hearsay by limiting it to words and conduct intended as an assertion, but the rule does not define the term assertion. Courts and legal scholars have focused relatively little attention on the nature and definition of assertion. That is unfortunate, because assertion is a robust concept that has been the subject of intense philosophic study over recent decades. -

Today, news outlets that openly proclaim a political perspective — conservative, progressive, centrist, or otherwise — are more central to American life than at any time since the first journalism schools opened their doors. Conservative audiences, in particular, express far less trust in mainstream news media than do their liberal counterparts. These divides have contributed to concerns of a “post-truth” age and fanned fears that members of opposing parties no longer agree on basic facts, let alone how to report and interpret the news of the day in a credible fashion. Renewed popularity and commercial viability of openly partisan media in the United States can be traced back to the rise of conservative talk radio in the late 1980s, but the expansion of partisan news outlets has accelerated most rapidly online. This expansion has coincided with debates within many digital newsrooms. Should the ideals journalists adopted in the 20th century be preserved in a digital news landscape? Or must today’s news workers forge new relationships with their publics and find alternatives to traditional notions of journalistic objectivity, fairness, and balance? Despite the centrality of these questions to digital newsrooms, little research on “innovation in journalism” or the “future of news” has explicitly addressed how digital journalists and editors in partisan news organizations are rethinking norms. -

TEACHING IGNORANCE: ON THE IMPORTANCE OF DEVELOPING PSYCHOANALYTIC SENSIBILITIES IN EDUCATION Jennifer Logue Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Lacan once remarked that there was “something quite ironic about Christ’s injunction to love thy neighbor as thyself because, actually, people hate themselves.”1 We might say, in observing the way people treat each other, perhaps they have always loved their neighbors as they’ve loved themselves: that is, “with a great deal of cruelty and disregard.”2 In his thorough engagement with Freud, Lacan theorizes that we are, at the core, ambivalent animals: wherever we love we hate, wherever we hate we love. Ambivalence does not, in the Freudian story (retold by Lacan, retold here by Adam Philips), mean mixed feelings, it means conflicting or contradictory feelings. Love and hate—too narrow concepts and so not quite accurate articulations—are the rudimentary sources, the most primary affects with which we try to make sense of our realities. They are mutually constituting in that you can’t have one without the other.3 Psychoanalytic inquiry encourages us to grapple with our often unrecognized yet structurally organizing ambivalences about anything and everything that matters to us, even as we carry on as if we are entirely rational, as if we are masters of our own house, so to speak. In other words, psychoanalytic insight informs us that we are often ignorant to our own affective (dis)investments. Since it came to prominence during the 2014 Gamergate controversy,1 this loosely- defined, puzzling movement has achieved mainstream recognition and has been the subject of discussion by journalists and scholars alike. Although the movement is notoriously difficult to define, a few overarching themes can be delineated: unequivocal rejections of immigration and multiculturalism among most, if not all, alt- right subgroups; an intense criticism of feminism, in particular within the manosphere community, which itself is divided into several clans with different goals and subcultures (men’s rights activists, Men Going Their Own Way, pick-up artists, incels).2 Demographically speaking, an overwhelming majority of alt-righters are white heterosexual males, one of the major social categories who feel dispossessed and resentful, as pointed out as early as in the mid-20th century by Daniel Bell, and more recently by Michael Kimmel (Angry White Men 2013) and Dick Howard (Les Ombres de l’Amérique 2017). -

BOOK REVIEWS | 179 Matthews’s arguments dovetail nicely with the tenets of critical race theory, which simultaneously point to the permanence of racism and white supremacy but also shine a light on potential transformation leverage points. For example, according to critical race theory, small gains in racial justice are possible when they overlap with the interests of the powerful. The language of implicit bias and unconscious racism may provide an opening narrative that can strategi- cally engage providers and policymakers to listen, reflect, and act in the service of racial justice. The Biased Care Model provides a model for necessary intersectional knowledge projects that examine how implicit bias and uncon- scious racism may be experienced and manifested differently depending on the particular configuration of structural race-gender-class inequality at play in a given local municipality or rural. Finally, the policy prescriptions allude to a way forward for cultivating synergies by stakeholder groups, including social scientists, providers, lawyers, and policymakers, as well as patients, to work together to eradicate implicit bias dovetails nicely with community-based participatory research methods in public health and potentially research practice partnerships in education, criminal justice, and other policy arenas. Just Medicine is necessary reading for all who envision a society in which health equity is a moral imperative. I would place Matthew’s contributions on the scale of Michelle Alexander’s transformational book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in a Time of Colorblindness (2010). Matthew not only documents the problem of color-blind racism but also provides solution- oriented road maps for a way forward. -

This is particularly the case with climate science denial, which has resulted in strong polarization around a non-controversial scientific issue, and prolific dissemination of climate misinformation. This in turn has had the effect of reducing public acceptance of climate change, and eroding support for policies to mitigate climate change. In order to develop effective responses to science denial, it is necessary to first understand the drivers of science denial, which leads to deeper understanding of the techniques employed to cast doubt on the reality of climate change. Analysis of denialist techniques can inform development of interventions that neutralize misinformation. Inoculation has been shown to be an effective way to preemptively reduce the influence of climate science denial. Two methods to practically implement inoculation are misconception-based learning (teaching science by addressing scientific misconceptions) and techno- cognition (an interdisciplinary approach that implements psychological principles in the design of technological solutions to misinformation). Interventions and procedures developed for the counter- ing of climate misinformation may also be applied to other scientific topics rife with misinformation, such as vaccination and evolution. Hobby Lobby, courts considered religious freedom arguments regarding general regulations of for-profit businesses. A close reading reveals a key reason why one of these arguments succeeded where the other failed: judges in each case drew upon different assumptions about the nature of religion and religiosity. The work of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler can be used to frame this issue in terms of the constitution of religion and religious subjectivity. Modes of religiosity are constituted through their ongoing enactment, and the particular forms of religiosity that can or will be enacted are influenced by jurisprudence that recognizes some forms of religion over others for legal protection.
