Yanahan University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign During the Pleistocene, glacial advances left a small gap in the northwestern corner of Illinois, southwestern Wisconsin, and northeastern Iowa, which were never covered by the advancing Pleistocene glaciers (Taylor et al. 2009, p. 8, fig. 2.2). This is the Driftless Area – and it is one of Illinois’ most unique natural regions, comprising little more than 1% of the state. Illinois’ Driftless Area harbors more than 30 threatened or endangered plant species, and several unique habitat types. Among these habitats are talus, or scree, slopes, some of which retain ice throughout the year. The talus slopes that retain ice through the summer, and thus form a habitat which rarely exceeds 50 °F, even when the surrounding air temperature is in the 90’s °F, are known as “algific slopes.” While there are numerous examples of algific slopes in Iowa and Wisconsin, this habitat is very rare in Illinois (fewer than ten truly algific sites are known in the state). -

In particular, the position 15 of Cicindelidae (tiger beetles) appears problematic, as recent studies have found them either 16 within the Hydradephaga based on mitogenomes, or together with several unlikely relatives 17 in Geadeadephaga based on 18S rRNA genes. We newly sequenced nine mitogenomes of 18 representatives of Cicindelidae and three ground beetles (Carabidae), and conducted 19 phylogenetic analyses together with 29 existing mitogenomes of Adephaga. Our results 20 support a basal split of Geadephaga and Hydradephaga, and reveal Cicindelidae, together 21 with Trachypachidae, as sister to all other Geadephaga, supporting their status as Family. We 22 show that alternative arrangements of basal adephagan relationships coincide with increased 23 rates of evolutionary change and with nucleotide compositional bias, but these confounding 24 factors were overcome by the CAT-Poisson model of PhyloBayes. The mitogenome + 18S 25 rRNA combined matrix supports the same topology only after removal of the hypervariable 26 expansion segments. -

Forty-three complete or partial mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) from this family have been published in GenBank to date. In this study, we sequenced a nearly complete mitogenome of Amara aulica (Carabidae), using a next-generation sequencing method. This mitogenome was 16,646 bp in length, which encoded the typical 13 mitochondrial protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a putative control region. Combining with the published mitogenomes of Carabidae and five outgroup species from Trachypachidae, Gyrinidae and Dytiscidae, we performed phylogenetic estimates under maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference criteria to investigate the phylogenetic relationships of carabid beetles. The results showed that the family Carabidae was a non- monophyletic assemblage. The subfamilies Cicindelinae, Elaphrinae, Carabinae, Trechinae and Harpalinae were recovered as monophyletic groups. Moreover, the clade (Trechinae + (Brachininae + Harpalinae)) was consistently recovered in all analyses. Keywords: ground beetle; mitogenome; next-generation sequencing; phylogeny 1. The fauna of Carabidae in Azarbaijan, Iran, is very diverse and has not been studied thoroughly. In the following paper, this group of beneficial predators is studied, using samples taken through 2007–2010 across Azarbaijan. Species belonging to 12 subfamilies were collected from 24 different localities. Allopatric speciation and paleoclimatical events are the major drivers for species diversification in the tropics, especially for páramo species which show high diversity and endemicity. This dissertation elucidates speciation and diversification patterns of widely distributed species of beetles from isolated páramo patches across Ecuador, to provide insight into basic evolutionary processes for Andean insect species. Sampling targeted 17 sites in the páramo ecosystem (3500 – 4000 m), with pitfall trapping, hand collecting and leaf litter sampling. -

The ground beetle (Carabidae) fauna of Timor is reviewed based on recent collecting by the Australian Museum, in Timor Leste. 53 species were collected, of which the following nine species are described as new: Mecyclothorax timorensis sp. nov. The remaining material is identified to species, or at least to genus, and discussed according to the current classification of Carabidae. Several species and genera are newly recorded for Timor. In spite of the rather small number of species contained, the sample allows some insight into the relations of the Carabid fauna of Timor to the Oriental and Australopapuan Regions, with about two thirds of the species belonging to the Oriental fauna, and one third to the Australopapuan fauna. -
