  • Sandra Oh Sandra Oh Is a Major Reason Why
30 INTERVIEW EDGE n Thursday nights in America, life simply stops for somewhere between 10 inte rview Oand 20 million television viewers as they settle in for the newest episode of Grey’s Anatomy . Sandra Oh Sandra Oh is a major reason why. As Dr. Cristina Yang, she plays opposite the series’ title character, Dr. Meredith Grey, who is portrayed by Ellen Pompeo. They lead an ensemble cast that has become a second family to fans since the show first aired seven seasons ago. As J.M. Stewart discovered in this interview, Oh’s knack for creating signature characters (think Arli$$ and Sideways ) comes from an astonishingly honest place. Sandra’s greatest talent, however, may be the ability to keep her head and value her craft in a world where performers are measured by SAG Awards and Emmy Nominations. Of which she has plenty, by the way. EDGE: How was it conveyed to you that Grey’s Anatomy was a different kind of medical drama? s e g a m I It was never said or expressed SO: y t t e formally. Donald Trump Shoots the Match1 Sharon Mazer The day I realized it can be smart to be shallow was, for me, a deep experience. —Donald J. Trump (2004; in Remnick 2017:19) I don’t care if it’s real or not. Kill him! Kill him! 2 He’s currently President of the USA, but a scant 10 years ago, Donald Trump stepped into the squared circle, facing off against WWE owner and quintessential heel Mr. McMahon3 in the “Battle of the Billionaires” (WrestleMania XXIII). The stakes were high. The loser would have his head shaved by the winner. (Spoiler alert: Trump won.) Both Trump and McMahon kept their suits on—oversized, with exceptionally long ties—in a way that made their heads appear to hover, disproportionately small, over their bulky (Trump) and bulked up (McMahon) bodies. As avatars of capitalist, patriarchal power, they left the heavy lifting to the gleamingly exposed, hypermasculinist bodies of their pro-wrestler surrogates. McMahon performed an expert heel turn: a craven villain, egging the audience to taunt him as a clueless, elitist frontman as he did the job of casting Trump as an (unlikely) babyface, the crowd’s champion. For his part, Trump seemed more mark than smart. Where McMahon and the other wrestlers were working around him, like ham actors in an outsized play, Trump was shooting the match: that is, not so much acting naturally as neglecting to act at all. He soaked up the cheers, stalked the ring, took a fall, threw a sucker punch, and claimed victory as if he (and he alone) had fought the good fight (WWE 2013b).

(2018) Fear – Trump in the White House. London: Simon & Schuster (HB, pp xxii + 420, £12,29, ISBN: 978-1-4711-8129-0) Bob Woodward’s book Fear: Trump in the White House was one of the most awaited, hyped, and talked about books of 2018 – and understandably so. Woodward has authored or coauthored 18 books, several of which have portrayed American presidents and topped the national bestseller-lists. His previous work, not least with Carl Bernstein at the Washington Post, has earned him fame and acclaim, and has, among other things, been instrumental in starting a process that brought a former president down (e.g. Bernstein and Woodward, 1974). In 1973, the Washington Post received a Pulitzer Price for public service for the reporting Woodward and Bernstein did on the Watergate break-in. Here, they revealed how the scandal had ties all the way to the White House, implicating President Nixon who had to resign, as the nefarious details were uncovered. Woodward’s role in shaping America’s recent political history explains the hype and anticipation leading up to the publication of his latest book on Trump in the White House. And it perhaps also explains some of the mild disappointment generated in reading the book – at least for readers who had expected (or hoped for) consequences that merely gestured in the direction of those generated by the disclosure of the Watergate-scandal.

BASIC ARKANSAS INTESTATE SUCCESSION, RIGHTS OF SURVIVING SPOUSES, AND RELATED CURATIVE TECHNIQUES FOR LAWYERS AND LANDMEN BY 1 J. MARK ROBINETTE JR. I. Introduction Mineral interests may lay dormant for decades before becoming productive. In the interim, however, the owners of these interests do not lay dormant. They live long lives, marry, have children, and eventually, they die. Some of these persons have well-laid estate plans, know the nature and extent of their property, and upon their departure to the hereafter, leave their affairs in meticulous order with no question of who is entitled to what and where. Others depart this life leaving little more than a treasure map and their descendants. Generations and many lines of persons descended from one severed mineral owner repeat the cycle of life—marriage, children, and death with or without consideration for what happens to their property upon their passing. Over many generations with such variations in the handling of final affairs among members of a family, the ownership of the original mineral owner’s interest today can resemble a bowl of spaghetti. When confronted with such fragmented and splintered ownership, a lawyer or landman can untangle a family history and determine the true owners of a severed interest by simply knowing the basics of intestate succession, the rights of surviving spouses, and how to cure title issues generated by by the former. These course materials are intended as a refresher course for lawyers and as a general guide for landmen. This course will begin with an overview of intestate succession in Arkansas.

Diagnosing Drama: Grey’s Anatomy, Blind Casting, and the Politics of Representation AMY LONG N FEBRUARY 5, 2006 NEARLY THIRTY-EIGHT MILLION VIEWERS CHOSE TO forego post-Super Bowl celebrations in favor of tuning in to a Omuch-hyped episode of ABC’s hit medical melodrama Grey’s Anatomy. The episode thus constitutes ‘‘the best scripted-series perfor- mance since the series finale of Friends’’ in 2004 and ‘‘the best per- formance of an ABC show since an episode of Home Improvement in 1994’’ (‘‘Grey’s Scores Big’’). Grey’s Anatomy and its multiracial ensem- ble stand in marked contrast to the all-white casts of both aforemen- tioned shows, a fact that has not been lost on media observers. When civil rights groups issued their annual ‘‘diversity report cards’’ for 2006, ABC garnered the highest overall grade of the four major net- works (an A-), thanks in part to shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, and Ugly Betty (‘‘Grey’s Leads Charge’’). Its diverse cast and the production practices through which it was assembled have been the major focus of the media attention conferred upon Grey’s, second only to stories con- cerning the colossal audiences it routinely snags.1 The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes (currently the only African American woman ‘‘showrunner’’ in network television), gives the credit for her show’s diversity to her ‘‘race-blind’’ casting methods. In her Time Magazine profile of the writer and producer, Jeanne McDowell notes that ‘‘[Rhimes’] script for the pilot had no physical descriptions [of its characters] other than gender,’’ a statement repeated in almost all of the popular press coverage the show receives.2 As Rhimes herself affirmed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, ‘‘We really read every color actor for every single part.
