"We control it on our end, and now it's up to you" -- Exploitation, Empowerment, and Ethical Portrayals of the Pornography Industry Abstract Documentaries about pornography are beginning to constitute an entirely new subgenre of film. Big Hollywood names like James Franco and Rashida Jones are jumping on the bandwagon, using their influence and resources to invest in a type of audiovisual knowledge production far less mainstream than that in which they usually participate. The films that have resulted from this new movement are undoubtedly persuasive, no matter which side of the debate over pornography these directors have respectively chosen to represent. Moreover, regardless of the side(s) that audience members may have taken in the so-called “feminist porn debates,” one cannot ignore the rhetorical strength of the arguments presented in a wide variety of documentaries about pornography. -

Voices of Feminism Oral History Project Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College Northampton, MA AMBER HOLLIBAUGH Interviewed by KELLY ANDERSON December 15 and 16, 2003, January 20, 2004 New York, New York This interview was made possible with generous support from the Ford Foundation. © Sophia Smith Collection 2004 Narrator Amber Lynne Hollibaugh (b.1946), a “lesbian sex radical, ex-hooker, incest survivor, Gypsy child, poor-white-trash, high femme dyke,” grew up in a mixed-race, working-class family near Bakersfield, California. Hollibaugh’s movement politics date back to Freedom Summer in 1964 and she’s been a fulltime movement activist—whether New Left, feminist, or queer—ever since. For the past two decades, Hollibaugh has been at the center of feminist debate over sexuality and a leader in the fight against AIDS. She was the founding director of the Lesbian AIDS Project at the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, the first project of its kind in the nation, and produced an award- winning documentary on women living with AIDS, Heart of the Matter (1994). She is the author of My Dangerous Desires: A Queer Girl Dreaming Her Way Home (2000) and is currently the senior strategist with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Interviewer Kelly Anderson is an educator, historian, and community activist. She has an M.A. in women’s history from Sarah Lawrence College and is a Ph.D. candidate in U.S. History at the CUNY Graduate Center. COPENHAGEN BUSINESS SCHOOL Digital Infringements and the Responsibility of Digital Platforms by Christian Skettrup A master’s thesis written for the degree of Master of Business Administration and E-business Student ID: 117547 – Character count: 145.888 Supervisor: Nanna Bonde Thylstrup 15.05.2020 1 Abstract Private companies with digital platforms such as Facebook, are using discursive work and strategical positioning to situate themselves in a favorable position in the eyes of their users, advertisers, legislators and the general public. Despite repeatedly facilitating the distribution of some of the worst content that humanity has to offer, the society fails to hold them responsible for their part in the illegal activities. This is partly because most digital platforms are surrounded by a legal framework that exempt them from legal liability when their users conduct illegal activity, and partly because of secretive and opaque practices that makes it difficult to decipher the dynamics of commercial content moderation. With a grounded theory approach, this paper will show how digital platforms are not just neutral technological intermediaries that exist in a vacuum, but rather socio-technical objects that exist in complex political, economical and technological environments, from where they afford their users certain things. In practice they gain a quasi-legislative role, from which they can shape their users’ ability to exercise their fundamental rights. The Umbrella case provides a rare glimpse into the opaque and secretive regulation and moderation practices conducted by Facebook. Pleasure, pain and pornography: A gendered analysis of the influence of contemporary pornography on the lives of New Zealand emerging adults By Samantha Maree Keene A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Criminology Social and Cultural Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2019 i ii Abstract Historically, concerns have been raised about violence in pornography and the influence that such portrayals may have on levels of violence against women and children. Today, pornography is pervasively available on the internet and viewed by both men and women in ever-increasing numbers. In New Zealand, violence against women and children remains at alarmingly high levels, and concerns about pornography’s influence on gendered violence are a common refrain. Research remains inconclusive about the impacts of pornography on viewers’ sexual scripts, behaviours and attitudes, yet the voices of those most affected by pornography – viewers and their partners – are often omitted from pornography studies. Few New Zealand studies employ a gendered analysis of men’s and women’s experiences with pornography. To provide research specific to New Zealand about these experiences, this thesis explores the reported influences of mainstream pornography on the lives of a self-selecting sample of (primarily) heterosexual New Zealanders between the ages of 18 and 30. It adopts a uniquely gendered analysis and critically interrogates both men’s and women’s experiences with pornography in the digital age. The findings of this research suggest that pornography research necessitates a gendered appraisal both in terms of how pornography is experienced individually, but also within intimate relationships. -

Caswell, Chair This master’s thesis explores the stability and ramifications of two emergent categories of pornography: namely, feminist pornography and queer pornography. Though these terms— feminist and queer—have histories that connote resistance and disruption, they have been controlled and institutionalized in pornography to create a broader visibility and a deeper impact. These terms are analyzed in relation to two institutions that seek to control their meanings—the Feminist Porn Awards (FPAs) and PinkLabel.tv—and fourteen pornography studios that identify with either or both labels. I collected data from preexisting documents by implementing a content analysis. Two crucial findings suggest that 1) despite the foundational tenets of feminist and queer porn, as outlined by the FPAs and PinkLabel.tv, the studios did not always abide by them, and 2) strategic essentialism is a mode of temporarily fixing these categories to wield power in resistance to the naturalized mainstream power. -

Introduction Caffeine makes you sexy! This absurd slogan can be seen in the shop win- dows of a popular Brussels coffee chain— its bold pink lettering indicat- ing how they are mainly targeting female customers. It is one of the silli- est examples of something that is both very common and very worrisome nowadays, namely, the constant call on women to look “hot” and conform to the standards of sexiness as they are projected in the media, entertain- ment industry, and advertising. But what exactly is wrong with this state of affairs and what can be done about it? In a recent essay entitled “Sex Objects and Sexy Subjects” Sheila Lintott and Sherri Irvin (2016) take up this pressing issue and make an elaborate case for what they call a “feminist reclamation” of sexiness. In what follows, we will investigate the merits and shortcomings of their proposal (Sections 10.2 and 10.3), present an alternative account (Section 10.4), and conclude by considering how pornography may be part of the problem but also part of the solution in this matter (Sections 10.5 and 10.6). 10.2. A Critique of Sexiness According to Lintott and Irvin (L&I) there are two problems with sexi- ness today. The frst is that women are considered sexy in accordance with an externally dictated conception of sexiness. -

Women’s sexuality, specifically, is expected to be proficient and perpetually practising. We examine what the mainstreaming of porn- ography means for sexual desire and agency among 27 young women negotiating hetero- sex. Participants’ accounts of sexuality and pornography are reflected in a (dis)ordering porn interpretive repertoire. Porn is positioned alternately as: ridiculous and recapitulated performance; a (contested) arousal tool; pedagogy and pictogram;and(resisted) re-enactment pressure. Pornography’s regulatory effects are both rejected and recapitulated. WHITNEY STRUB Sanitizing the Seventies Pornography, Home Video, and the Editing of Sexual Memory ABSTRACT During the 1980s US feminist sex wars, pornography edited its own history, leav- ing a distorted record both less problematic and less queer than scholars have yet recognized. Academic inquiry into pornography coincided with home-video boom years, and research often took place in adult backrooms, necessarily because pornography was so poorly archived. Yet even as access has shifted from VHS to digital, the field has yet to reckon with how its interpre- tive frameworks were shaped by a material history in which the films that scholars watched were often altered from the versions patrons had seen in theaters. Gone from both straight and gay films were many transgressive sex acts that had frequently been staples of the genre, affecting the perceived oeuvre of nearly every hardcore filmmaker of the era. This article recov- ers the lost history of sexual media editing, arguing for a more carefully historicized interro- gation of the commercial sources of our porn archives. KEYWORDS censorship, home video, new video studies, pornography, sex wars At the height of the s feminist sex wars, pornography edited its own history. Few noticed and no official archives recorded or preserved this change, but the interpretive stakes were, and remain, high. Scenes disappeared, and with them the social meanings of texts, resulting in a disconnect between embodied histori- cal experiences and the later textual interpretations of those works. The pornog- raphy industry sanitized its s iterations, leaving a distorted record that narrowed the scope of its erotic imaginary in ways that left it both less misogy- nistic and less expansive, a triumph of the banal and the genital that necessitates intervention, since the “porno chic” that scholars have inherited is in large part an industrial memory production of the sands, as pornography’shis- tory was quietly disciplined and revised over the course of its various platform adaptations.
