Each video is under an hour in length and is designed to introduce the play to students in high school and college. The teacher’s guide that comes with each video gives – among other things – a brief analysis of the play, topics for discussion or essays, and a short list of recom- mended reading. Production Notes At the beginning and end of this blood- soaked tragic play Macbeth fights bravely: loyal to his King and true to himself. (It takes nothing away from his valour that in the final battle King and self are one.) But in between the first battle and the last Macbeth betrays and destroys King, country, and whatever is good in his own nature.

Some say that the play is cursed because of the way in which it portrays the witches and so tradition has it that the name of the play should not be spoken in theatre; instead it is referred to simply as ‘the Scottish play’. *** The Scottish play begins with the brief appearance of a trio of witches who act as the narrators for this version of the play, appearing between each scene. It then moves to a military camp, where the Scottish King Duncan hears the news that his generals, Macbeth, and Banquo, have defeated two separate invading armies—one from Ireland and one from Norway.

  • Shakespeare Macbeth
Synopsis Macbeth, set primarily in Scotland, mixes witchcraft, prophecy, and murder. Three “Weïrd Sisters” appear to Macbeth and his comrade Banquo after a battle and prophesy that Macbeth will be king and that the descendants of Banquo will also reign. When Macbeth arrives at his castle, he and Lady Macbeth plot to assassinate King Duncan, soon to be their guest, so that Macbeth can become king. After Macbeth murders Duncan, the king’s two sons flee, and Macbeth is crowned. Fearing that Banquo’s descendants will, according to the Weïrd Sisters’ predictions, take over the kingdom, Macbeth has Banquo killed. At a royal banquet that evening, Macbeth sees Banquo’s ghost appear covered in blood. Macbeth determines to consult the Weïrd Sisters again. They comfort him with ambiguous promises. Another nobleman, Macduff, rides to England to join Duncan’s older son, Malcolm. Macbeth has Macduff’s wife and children murdered. Malcolm and Macduff lead an army against Macbeth, as Lady Macbeth goes mad and commits suicide. Macbeth confronts Malcolm’s army, trusting in the Weïrd Sisters’ comforting promises. He learns that the promises are tricks, but continues to fight. Macduff kills Macbeth and Malcolm becomes Scotland’s king. They were people who had made a pact with the Devil in exchange for supernatural powers. If your cow was ill, it was easy to decide it had been cursed. If there was plague in your village, it was because of a witch. If the beans didn’t grow, it was because of a witch. Witches might have a familiar – a pet, or a toad, or a bird – which was supposed to be a demon advisor. People accused of being witches tended to be old, poor, single women. It is at this time that the idea of witches riding around on broomsticks (a common household implement in Elizabethan England) becomes popular. King James I became king in 1603. He was particularly superstitious about witches and even wrote a book on the subject. Shakespeare wrote Macbeth

New Media Shakespeares, of which YouTube is the most popular example, tend to be brief, quixotic, and lacking in high seriousness. We need look no further than the recent spate of Hamlet school parodies, of varying poetic and narratological merits, which set the plot of Shakespeare’s tragedy to Miley Cyrus’s song “Wrecking Ball.”1 Digital Humanities approaches to the Shakespearean text, as exemplified by textual corpora and authorship studies, work on a grand scale and are marked by methodological rigor. Emphasizing the material differences between these two kinds of digital work, however, obscures similarities that could let us see digitized Shakespeares of different kinds as co-existing along a continuum. Also, be prepared to be quizzed on these words. perturb: disturb, bother taper: candle note: our word taper that means to make gradually smaller (e.g., to taper someone off a medicine) probably comes from the sense of a taper (candle) gradually diminishing in size as it burns. guise: outward appearance note: think of the word disguise fortify: to strengthen pester: to annoy hew: to cut down abhor: hate, detest; to reject something very strongly Etymology: ab (away) + horror (to tremble; shudder) The word literally means to shrink back (away) in horror (trembling). Word is stronger than hate. II. Background Info: Moirai (3 Fates): In Greek Mythology, these are the three sisters who have the power to decide man’s destiny. The first of the sisters (Clotho) spun the thread of a person’s life and decided what the life would be like. The second (Lachesis) measured the thread of life. She decided how long it would be. The third (Atropos) is the one who cut the thread of life. Essentially, these three sisters determined the length of each person’s life as well as how much suffering. Their names in Roman Mythology are Nona, Decuma, and Morta. And Norse Mythology also has three goddesses of destiny. The exact details of these three goddesses differ in different stories and pieces of art. Most of our information comes from Hesiod’s Theogeny, although there are references in Homer’s Iliad and Plato’s Republic.
