1 WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES December 31, 2018 MONDAY Section Four End of some eras, start of others marked 2018 By the Daily Times staff In 2018, some storied eras came to a close while others were just beginning. For the Green Bay Packers, a second straight season miss- ing the playoffs cost longtime head coach Mike McCarthy his job. His tenure will be best re- membered for the team’s fourth Super Bowl championship won in 2010. The downward slide could be attributed to injuries, underperforming draft picks over a long period of time or coaching, or all of them. Re- gardless, back-to-back seasons of missing the playoffs with one of the best quarterbacks in the game in Aaron Rodgers was unacceptable in Titletown. The Badgers took a step back both on the men’s basketball court and the gridiron. Wiscon- sin’s football team is used to playing in January bowl games and finished last season last year with a late December bowl game. The same was true this year. For anyone who remem- bers Badger football before Barry Alvarez arrived in 1993, these are still the good days with a high bar. The men’s basketball team enjoyed a run similar to the football team but finally saw its run of NCAA Tournament appearances come to a close in DAILY TIMES 2018. INTRODUCTION Collegiate athletics has become big business in America, generating billions of dollars each year. Division I-A' football and men's basketball are among the most popular sports in America, and they are the revenue generators in collegiate athletics. Central Broadcasting Systems (CBS) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) are currently under an eleven-year, $6 billion contract for the television broadcast rights for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.2 Fox is paying $330 million for the right to broadcast the Fiesta, Sugar, and Orange Bowls from 2007-2010 and the right to broadcast the college football national championship games from 2007-2009. 3 With so much money spent on collegiate football and men's basketball, it appears that successful programs in these sports offer universities an opportunity to generate significant revenue.
