Students will acquire knowledge of the chronology of events and movements as well as develop the ability to analyze historical documents and express historical understanding in writing. They will examine the origins and consequences of the Industrial Revolution, nineteenth century political reform in Western Europe, and imperialism in Africa, Asia, and South America. They will explain the causes and consequences of the great military and economic events of the past century, including the World Wars, the Great Depression, the Cold War, and the Russian and Chinese Revolutions. Finally, students will study the rise of nationalism and the continuing persistence of political, ethnic, and religious conflict in many parts of the world. Relevant Tennessee connections will be part of the curriculum, as well as appropriate primary source documents. Students will explore geographic influences on history, with attention given to political boundaries that developed with the evolution of nations from 1750 to the present and the subsequent human geographic issues that dominate the global community. THE LONDON ORATORY SCHOOL HISTORY DEPARTMENT Interesting times; a pandemic, economic challenges, entertainment curtailed, centres of learning impacted, public worship suspended, travel severely limited, people confined, families divided, food shortages, innovative ideas, scientific discoveries, technological advances, reappraisal of values, societal shifts, truth and lies…………….. Is this 2020, or 1348 or 1665 or 1918 – or all of them perhaps? All, many or some of the above descriptions fit throughout history. Not much is ‘new’ then; and yet so much is. Our world is not the fourteenth century or the seventeenth; we live very different lives in a very different world…. and yet we wonder at the similarities while we contemplate the changes. History, the past, is ever present. This is what makes it such a fascinating, illuminating, useful and rewarding subject. The History department have been sharing their ideas for how to use the time in ‘lockdown’ to explore the subject more widely on a variety of levels. Leading by Example If You Want a Hint on Success in Recruiting, You Might As Well Ask Someone Whose Recent Successes Have Caught the Nation’S Attention

Hill South Dakota 99.69 Leading by Example If you want a hint on success in recruiting, you might as well ask someone whose recent successes have caught the nation’s attention. Commander Bob Brandt of Chapter 32 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was recently named the DAV’s Recruiter of the Year after signing 131 eligible veterans to the DAV. One might say, on different levels, that Commander Brandt has an unfair advantage. After all, he dedicates some 40 hours a week to his chapter as an unpaid volunteer. A former Navy Corpsman, in addition to commanding his chapter he serves as one of his Department’s most renowned service officers. Many of his recruits come from his service work and many more come from referrals. Above and beyond focusing on recruiting alone, Commander Brandt takes an active role in proliferating the DAV brand in his community. His chapter is the biggest in the department, and it is growing constantly because the DAV is a known quantity – largely thanks to Commander Brandt’s constant involvement. His energy and dedication have created momentum. By providing such high quality service work and constantly finding opportunities to be in the public eye, he has become a subject matter expertly sought by Guard and Reserve units to provide pre- and post-deployment transition assistance work. If there’s one lesson we can take away from this stellar veteran, it’s that success breeds success. -

By using his smart tactics, Hitler persuaded the people of Germany, when all were lost from the hope of having any success from World War I and the great depression. Hitler created a political party called the Nazi party. This party was originally known as the National German Workers Party (Barrett). He created the design for the flags and banners which had an ancient symbol on it called the swastika. Soon enough he became appointed chancellor and then he became known as Führer, a dictatorial leader after Chancellor Hindenburg died. Hitler gave Germany confidence and lifted their spirits up. He gave jobs to the jobless and built up the economy by introducing the Autobahn, Volkswagen and the People Radio (Bartoletti). Unfortunately, he had an insidious plan. His plan was to practically brainwash the people, racially cleans Germany, and start a war which was later known as World War II. He did this because he was power hungry and wanted to rule over the world. Adolf Hitler was one of the most egregious leaders of the 20th century who is best known for his tragic actions during World War II. He began his leadership triumphantly by helping Germany grow economically (Barrett). He was best known for all of his destructive actions during World War II and for all the deaths that this man caused, and the families destroyed. Adolf Hitler was born on August 20, 1889, in Austria. -
