I did not take due care in setting up a trip to the Red River Motorcycle Park in Bulcher, Texas. We were two hours from home, loaded Twith camping gear and motorbikes on a cold December day facing the locked gate of the park. (Somebody forgot to make reservations and pay the membership fees. One has to have already purchased a membership and obtained the gate code.) Kyle’s dad, Jeff, hopped the gate, hiked the park, found a rider, got the cell phone number of the owner, called her and con- vinced her to give us the code to the gate. We had 10 motorcycles on display in a phenomenal location. Lee Pearl brought a full suitcase, packed with his A1970 CT90. Because he packed so well, Lee snuck in a second bike for our display. He hosts the annual VJLA Tech Day event for small Honda tiddlers in spring, sponsored by Dratv.com, that includes tech sessions and a slow street course on Saturday and trail ride on Sunday. Chris Lagaris brought his 1973 Kawasaki H1 500 Mach III. He bought the bike about nine years ago from the original owner, complete with 13,000 miles on the odometer. In six months, the bike looked like it just came off the showroom floor in 1973. Since then, over 2000 16 www.vjmc.org April 2011 carefree miles have been put on the bike and it continues to win high acclaim at all the shows where it is displayed. Dennis Reppel brought his 1982 CT110. He likes to be dif- ferent, by applying his unique talent to bike restoration, as seen with the multi-colored seat on his red machine. Dennis likes to collect and ride vintage scram- bler and dual-sport Japanese motorcycles. Randall Baselt brought his 1963 CR93, and numerous spectators wanted to take it for a ride. He began his riding career, with a Honda Sport 50cc CA110 in 1963. Steve Davenport brought a 1963 Honda CL72 250 Scrambler that was praised by just about everyone walking by the booth. The former basket case had been crashed in ’67, but the frame and engine numbers matched and all the parts were there, including two aluminum fenders. After one year, the bike was restored to like-new condition. John Pera brought in his 1979 Yamaha XS400F; John was 15 in the 1981 photo and was very proud to be chauffer- ing his favorite Gramma. John has owned his current XS400F for 5 years; it is unrestored with only 985 original miles on the odometer. Michael George brought his 1975 Suzuki GT250 that was owned by singer Pat Boone, who bought it for his father to ride around Nashville. What made the purchase so easy is that, Michael has been his bass player for about 20 years. Nice gig. Tom Carroll brought in his 1971 Yamaha R-5. This year’s Mid-America Las Vegas mo- torcycle auction, Jan. 6-8, featured a unique and significant selection of vintage, racing and custom bikes. The event started on a late Thursday evening after a dinner and recep- tion and continued from morning to night on Friday and Saturday. This year, the VJMC had a booth set up in the main auction hall to receive members and recruit new ones. The people at Mid-America treat the VJMC well when it comes to the event. The club is always accommodated with a space in a busy area. I have worked the show the last few years and enjoy meeting members from all over. This year I took an informal count of the existing members who visited the booth to say hello. I personally spoke with more far away as Tampa, Fla., and Boston. t’s hard to believe that this stock 1978 Yamaha XS650 Special can be transformed into this flat-track replica racer of days gone by. This restoration project came to me one day when I was visiting a friend I of mine. I had only known Ingo a short time. I walked into his beautiful, overstuffed motorcycle part crammed garage and he pulled the cover off what was a rolling frame of the XS650 in the process of becoming a street- legal tracker. Conversion I saw the finished wheels, tires and gas tank and I fell in love with the bike at first sight, not knowing exactly what a tracker was at the time (or even what an Omar was). My friend explained how he had started the project two years prior of a Special and was losing interest … music to my ears. About a month later we struck a deal. 1978 XS650 to street tracker The bike’s paint scheme is inspired by

Kenny Roberts’ Yamaha racing colors in the 1970s. The XS650 did not produce the same power as other bikes, but at the time the XS650 was the most modern bike using overhead cams where the others still used push rods. The XS was produced globally from 1968 through 1985 with a designation from TX650 to XS650. Yamaha produced an estimated 250,000-plus units in the 17-year production run. The bike made 53hp at 7,000 rpm and weighted 450lbs. The large num- bers of these bikes spawned many aftermarket 22 www.vjmc.org April 2011 parts. Mikesxs.com has almost single-handedly brought these bikes back from obsolescence. If you have an XS650 frame and a block, you can pretty much build another bike from their reproduction parts. Whenever I start a project, I get it done as fast as I can, then go back and tweak it so I don’t lose interest or become overwhelmed. So when I bought the bike, I had about 75 percent of the parts I needed to complete it. About two weeks later I had the bike together and running, and that was just the start. A local painter did a great job creating period hand painted graphics and incorporating his own flare. The bike looked great, but did not run anywhere near as good as it looked. It took me about two years to go back through this bike and sort out some drivability problems. Omar’s kits (omarsdtr.com)at the time were increased height, the tail lamp came in contact track tires to choose from. What I found is all more about building show bikes then for actual with the tire. those tires were too large for the rim width. riders. I would have none of that. This was one of the two largest problems When motorcycle tire manufactures make I had to sort out. I had gotten the bike with the frame already modified and painted to accept the custom dirt track tail section. The forks were polished and Race Tech springs were installed. The rear shocks were replaced with Works shocks about an inch taller to help compensate for the lower rear tail fender section and brake light. Omars offers two style brake lights, one that mounts to the bottom of the fender and one that mounts off to the side on the axle or shock mount. I later had to use the one off to the side because despite the April 2011 www.vjmc.org 23 COVER STORY

Just installed is a Pirelli Scorpion MT 90 AT 120/80-18, with a nice chunky DOT tread pattern, coupled with an 18-inch 2.5 Excel aluminum shouldered and dimpled rim from Buchanan’s with polished stainless spokes and nipples. I was left with a second major problem. At 5,000 rpm, the bike would abruptly buck then come back on as if it was running lean. I never rode an XS650 before, so I did not know what to expect for power. The bike seemed as though it had not much pull throughout the power band and fell off at top end completely. After a week of jetting the bike after work and not finding a solution, I reached out to the amount of back pressure so the stock carbs rust clogs up the air vent causing the fuel not to some club board guys on the XS650 Garage can work properly. flow and the bike will lose power and shut off (xs650temp.proboards.com). ver the winter of 2010, I had the privilege of representing the VJMC again at the Interna- tional Bike Show in N.Y.C. with fellow membersO Forrest Engelmann and Mike Parish. We all talked vintage bikes for three days with attendees about their old memories and some were looking for clubs like the VJMC for their own events. At the event, we were approached by a fellow vintage bike enthusiast to participate in a show in N.J. The event was The Art of the Bike and bluegrass festival in Frenchtown. I contacted a few VJMC members in the area and got Gary Renna and his Yamaha flat- tracker and his beautiful H1 along with my Z1s and my Z fighter to the show in May. The day started out rainy, but the turnout was fantastic. There was as much a show in the parking areas as there where in the display field. There was music by some great bands. The 2011 event is scheduled for June 18 (June 19 rain date) at Tinicum Park in Erwinna, Pa. Get more info at www.artofthebike.com. ●
