Results Book Gymnastic Artistic 6 - 16 August Version History Artistic Gymnastics Ginástica artística / Gymnastique artistique Competition Format and Rules Formato e regras da competição / Format et régles de la compétition Olympic competition format There are 14 artistic gymnastics events at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, including men’s and women’s individual apparatus events, team events and all-around events. Men’s events Women’s events floor exercise vault pommel horse uneven bars still rings balance beam vault floor exercise parallel bars individual all-around horizontal bar team competition individual all-around team competition There are two competition phases: qualifications and finals. Qualifications All gymnasts compete as part of a team or as individuals and the results of this phase are used to qualify gymnasts for the team, individual all-around and the apparatus finals. No scores are carried over from the qualification phase to the finals. Team finals The top eight men’s and top eight women’s teams from the qualification phase proceed to the team finals. They compete again on all apparatus and the teams with the highest total scores are awarded the medals. All-around finals The top 24 men and top 24 women from the qualification phase (maximum two per NOC) proceed to the individual all- around finals. The gymnasts perform again on all apparatus and those with the highest scores are awarded the medals. The individual all-around title is considered to be the premium achievement in gymnastics. Apparatus finals The eight men and eight women who placed highest on each apparatus in the qualification phase (maximum two per NOC) proceed to the apparatus finals. The gymnasts perform again on each apparatus and those with the highest scores are awarded the individual medals for each apparatus. Differences between the FIG World Championships and the Olympic Games There are fewer competitors at the Olympic Games than at the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Championships. Only 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams and a designated number of NOCs with individuals, who qualified at the world championships in the previous year or at the second qualifying event, can participate at the Olympic Games, whereas the world championships are open to all FIG member federations. Ties will not be broken in the finals at the world championships, but will be in the finals of the Olympic Games. Artistic Gymnastics Ginástica artística / Gymnastique artistique Changes since the London 2012 Olympic Games A previous requirement that individual apparatus medallists from the qualifying world championships must have competed on a certain number of apparatus in order to be eligible for the Olympic Games has been eliminated. Sport rules and procedures Judging A panel of nine judges preside over each apparatus in artistic gymnastics. They are divided into two panels to calculate the F (final score). Two judges calculate the D (difficulty) score based on the content of the routine and five judges determine the E (execution) deductions from the maximum possible score (10.00), based on the gymnast’s execution of the routine. The other two members of the judging panel are reference judges, introduced to establish an automatic and time-saving correction of the execution score in case of problems. If the difference between the marks of the two reference judges exceeds pre-defined tolerances, the reference score is not taken into account at all. Calculation of scores Definitions: D-score: The D-score is the score the gymnast receives based on the content value of the routine. It is based on the difficulty of the elements a gymnast performs. E-score: The judges’ scores for execution are averaged after the highest and lowest marks from the E-judges panel have been deleted. RE-score: The reference score is calculated by taking the average of the two R judges' marks. Gap: The E-score and the RE-score are compared according to the Reference Judges System (RJS). 1. The highest and lowest of the five E judges' scores are dropped and the average of the three remaining scores is used to calculate the execution judges' score (E-score). 2. If the gap between the E-score and the RE-score exceeds the pre-defined tolerances, the E-score will be replaced by the average of the RE-score and the E-score. Otherwise the execution judges' score will remain unchanged. D + E (- penalties if any) = F. Example: D-score: 6.00 E-score: 9.30 (calculated from: 9.10, 9.20, 9.60, 9.30, 9.40) F-score: 6.00 + 9.30 = 15.30 Tiebreak rules The FIG tiebreaking rules are presented in the FIG Technical Regulations and define how to determine which gymnast or group should prevail in case of equality of points. In artistic gymnastics, the main principles are: Artistic Gymnastics Ginástica artística / Gymnastique artistique Qualification for the all-around finals, and the all-around finals In case of a tie for any place, ties will be broken by the following criteria: 1. The highest sum of the final apparatus scores (i.e. the total of the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 highest final apparatus scores for men/the total of the 3, 2, 1 highest final apparatus scores for women). 2. The highest total execution score by adding all apparatus. 3. The highest total difficulty score by adding all apparatus. 4. If the gymnasts remain tied they will share the same classification. Qualification for the apparatus finals (except vault), and the apparatus finals (except vault) If a tie occurs on any apparatus, except vault, ties will be broken by the following criteria: 1. The highest execution score. 2. The highest difficulty score. 3. If the gymnasts remain tied they will share the same classification. Qualification for the apparatus finals for vault, and the apparatus finals for vault If a tie occurs on vault, ties will be broken by the following criteria: 1. The highest score between the two vaults before the average for the final score. 2. The highest execution score from either vault. 3. The highest difficulty score from either vault. 4. If the gymnasts remain tied they will share the same classification. Qualification for the team finals, and the team finals In case of a tie at any place, ties will be broken by the following criteria: 1. The highest sum of the team apparatus counting scores (i.e. the total of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 highest apparatus team scores for men / the total of 3, 2, 1 highest apparatus team scores for women). 2. If the teams remain tied they will share the same classification. Penalties/disqualification rules Penalties can be imposed on either an individual gymnast or on a team as a whole, depending on the infraction: • Individual penalties can include going out of bounds on the floor exercise, exceeding the time limit for a routine, exceeding the time limit for warm up, or exceeding the allowable time to resume an exercise after having fallen from an apparatus. (These types of penalties are deducted from the gymnast’s score for the apparatus). • More general penalties can include wearing inappropriate attire, and are deducted from the gymnast’s apparatus score. • Exceeding team warm-up time, non-identical leotards (for gymnasts of the same team), incorrect advertising, or team gymnasts competing in the incorrect order are deducted from the team score on the apparatus concerned. There are two types of disqualification (DSQ): • Disqualification as a result of a breach of the FIG technical rules and regulations (decisions are taken by the competition jury). • Disqualification as a result of infringing recognised sport ethics and rules (e.g. positive doping control). Decisions are taken by the IOC and FIG authorities. If a gymnast is disqualified from any phase of the competition, in individual and/or team events, his/her score and rank will be removed and his/her name will be displayed on the results system with the IRM DSQ in place of total score. Artistic Gymnastics Ginástica artística / Gymnastique artistique Disqualification from qualification means the gymnast may not proceed to any finals. Disqualification from all-around final means that the gymnast receives no results in all-around final, but the gymnast may compete in the team and/or apparatus finals if qualified. In any of the above situations, the affected results output(s) will be produced and marked as "REVISED" with an explanation. Expulsion from competition: A gymnast can be expelled from the competition. In case of an expulsion, the gymnast in question will not be allowed to continue the competition. The scores achieved to the point of expulsion will count and remain as part of the results for individuals or teams. Protests/appeals A written inquiry may be submitted to the jury only regarding the value of the D scores.
