ABSTRACT Title of Document: VAUDEVIVAL: Old is the new New Emily Kate Oleson, M.F.A., 2012 Directed By: Assistant Professor Miriam Phillips, School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies Vaudevival: Old is the new New was an evening-length concert performed October 20th & 21st, 2011 at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in partial fulfillment of the M.F.A. degree in Dance from the University of Maryland’s School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies. Vaudevival was a “trad” dance theater project that challenged concepts of aesthetic hierarchies in popular culture. The show ricocheted through twentieth-century vernacular dance to create a vibrant statement about the cyclical nature of art and society, with live music and multi-media projections. This paper is a written account of theoretical and practical problems of identity politics and appropriation that unfolded during the choreographic process. Envisioning a creative utopia free of exploitative hierarchies – both on the stage and on the page, Vaudevival invokes the old to reinvent the new through the intertextuality of American dances, bringing scholarship to the theater, and bringing some theater to scholarship. Oleson 2012 Acknowledgements I need to thank most of all my husband Matthew Olwell, who has taught me many dances and many things about life, and fostered my inner child’s love of tap dancing. Thanks also to my actual child Lydia Jade Olwell who joined us in the show and was so patient especially during the writing of this paper. A very early formative influence in this project was a class on Vaudeville Songs at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, West Virginia taught by Rhiannon Giddens, whose instruction and dialogue has been a guiding light in remembering why I want to do research and make art. Her band the Carolina Chocolate Drops, along with The Wiyos, The Woodshedders and Luminescent Orchestrii have been guiding posts to finding the music and dance I now love best, for this I am eternally grateful. Greg C. Adams taught me more about how to be a scholar and a collaborator than any other artist I have met, keeping us all laughing the whole time. Ann Kilkelly, who took me under her wing with kind encouragement and patience and then generously shared time, information and dances, is the true definition of a mentor. I could not have done this project without the caring guidance of many other teachers as well: Aysha Upchurch and Gesel Mason, set intellectually and physically challenging pieces on me that expanded my capabilities as a performer. Leslie Felbain and Brandon Barnette offered coaching that made huge differences to me to this day. Kwame Opare, Deidre Dawkins, Sylvia Soumah, Dawn Springer, Patrik Widrig, Adrian Galvin, Junious “House” Brickhouse, Russell “Ironman” Campbell, Rashaad Pearson, LaTasha Barnes, Emily Wessell, and other dancers at Urban ii Artistry have helped me to find new information about myself along the journey of this project through their excellent classes. The opportunity to study with these masters has been an honor. The dancers who worked with me on this concert, and therefore in research for this writing, have given me the profound gift of their prior skills, willingness to experiment, and trust in navigating our way through some very potentially uncomfortable moments. For honest conversation and feedback, and myriad personal sacrifices to be part of this process, I thank the cast from the bottom of my heart. I was incredibly lucky to count these individuals among my collaborators: Raha Behnam, Michele Chia, Chelsea Freeman, Adrian Galvin, Marianne Goris, Ashley Haymaker, Shanna Lim, James Maisu, Catherine Marafino, Lydia Olwell, Matthew Olwell, Amy Scheer, Connor Voss, and David Yates. The dancers from far away places or times that have helped me through their You Tube presence, particularly Al Minns and Leon James, are our special heroes. Choreographers of dances that others have passed on, Brenda Bufalino, Leonard Reed, possibly Marilyn Miller and Joe E. Brown, are all treasures, and we appreciate having access to their genius. Allison Robbins, Josephine Stewart, Kate Spanos, Becky Hill, Megan Downes, Eileen Carson-Schatz, Jeff Booth, and my dance partner of many years Meg Madden, though not appearing in the show, have all either contributed directly or been instrumental in my learning skills that were important in my work for this project. Abisola Kusimo, thank you for bringing your brilliant strength and clarity to this conversation, you were a shining star in the stage production and a courageous iii and patient partner in collaboration. The reliable, accommodating and delightful costume designer Rebecca DeLapp was magically always available every time I needed her help. My committee, Paul Jackson, Alvin Mayes, Karen Bradley, Ann Kilkelly, and my chair Miriam Phillips, have been wonderfully patient and supportive, giving me space and also kindly accommodating me in every way. Working with Sara Pearson and Patrik Widrig has also been life changing; their superior listening skills, deep compassion as teachers, and commitment as artists modeled the way to find the material that would sustain me through this project. Adrienne Clancy allowed us to practice empowered learning that helped me realized what I wanted out of my own work. Lastly, but far from least, thank you to the musicians who joined us for process and product, giving just the right amount of suggestion, keeping an open mind, and bringing an immense amount of skill and musical prowess. Working with Joseph “Joebass” DeJarnette, Jabari Exum, Lydia Martin, Sarah Alden, Greg C. Adams, Aimee Curl, Morgan Morrison and Danny Knicely was literally a dream come true. You made it a party.
