Thompson, Acting Governor Commissioner Ex-Officio, State Division of Conservation Sir: I have the honor to submit herewith Georgia Geological Survey Bulletin No. 54, "Geology and Mineral Resources of the Paleozoic Area in North­ west Georgia," by Charles Butts and Benjamin Gildersleeve. The publica­ tion of this bulletin at this time fills an urgent and long-felt need for an up-to-date treatise upon the geology and mineral resources in one of Georgia's most active commercial mining areas. The report contains a manuscript on the geology and stratigraphy, a companion manuscript on the economic minerals of the area, a mineral map and a geologic map, both of which are on a scale large enough to be of practical use. It is believed that this report will be received with universal approval and utilization by both geologists and industrialists. One unusual economic feature is the inclusion in the bulletin of complete chemical analyses made on representative samples of all the limestone in northwest Georgia. This will enable the industrialist to determine before­ hand the approximate location of the type of limestone for which he may have need in his manufacturing process. Another unusual feature of the report is the publication for the first time in a Georgia Geological Survey bulletin of a representative group of fossil plates and pictures. The manner of preparing and publishing this report is another example of the value of cooperation between a federal and a state agency. The Department of Mines, Mining and Geology did not have available the personnel or the facilities for doing the field work and preparing the bulletin and the maps alone. Due to a working agreement which has existed between this department and the Tennessee Valley Authority. we were able to obtain the cooperation of the Minerals Research Section of the Commerce Department of the 'I'ennessee Valley Authority. This cooperation included the revision of existing geologic manuscripts and maps, the preparation of the economic section of the report, the preparation of illustrations and fossil plates, and the publishing of the two large-scale maps referred to above. Without this cooperation, it would h<ive been utterly impracticable for this department to have undertaken such a ramified project alone. It is our belief that the publication of this excellent report at this time will serve to stimulate increased activity leading toward a more proper development and utilization of the mineral resources of northwest Georgia.     Late Carboniferous bryozoans from La Hermida, Spain Andrej Ernst and Elke Minwegen Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 51 (3), 2006: 569-588 Fifteen bryozoan species belonging to thirteen genera have been identified from an outcrop of the Picos de Europa Formation (Moscovian, Upper Carboniferous) at La Hermida in northern Spain. Three species and one genus are new Coscinium hermidensis sp. nov., Cystodictya pustulosa sp. nov., and Cystocladia hispanica gen. et sp. nov. Rhabdomesid bryozoans are the most diverse order with seven species, followed by cystoporids (four species), fenestellids (three species) and trepostomids (one species). Bryozoans with erect branched or reticulate colonies dominate in the studied assemblage; only two species possess encrusting colonies. Together with associated crinoids, the bryozoan assemblage indicates a subtidal environment below the zone of vigorous water movement. The La Hermida bryozoan fauna confirms the Upper Carboniferous age of the Picos de Europa Formation and allows various biogeographical interpretations. All previously known species of the genus Coscinium were reported from the Lower Permian of Russia. Clausotrypa monticola is known from the Lower Permian of Russia and Arctic as well as from the Upper Carboniferous of Carnic Alps (Austria). Rhabdomeson cf. propatulissimum and Penniretepora pseudotrilineata are known from the same level of Italian Carnic Alps. Streblotrypa (Streblascopora ) nikiforovae and Rhombocladia punctata are known from the Upper Carboniferous (Moscovian) of Ukraine. Fistulipora petaloida is known from Kasimovian Stage of Russian Plate. Several other species show connections with North America. Although only one specimen of each is known, it is well preserved. The new Agnrico- crinus bears a resemblance to A. ponderoszts Wood, and the new Actinocriniles to four species described by Miller & Gurley: A. spergenensis, A. botuztosz~s,A. gibsoni, and A. shnronensis. A preliminary survey of species assigned to Agaricocrinz~ssuggests that revision of the genus is overdue. Although the occurrence of the specimens leaves some doubt as to their stratigraphic posi- tion, we conclude that they both probably weathered from the Fort Payne formation and rolled down the slope onto the New Providence, where they were found. The sites where the crinoids were picked up are now deeply inundated by water impounded by the Wolf Creek dam on the Cumberland River. Wyse Jackson Department of Geology, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland Ever since the commencement of scientific publication the views of the authors have been available to others to agree with or to find fault with. Without scientific debate it is unlikely that major scientific advancements could have been made. The differences of opinion of a number of scientific combatants have in the past led to long-term animosities. In the field of geology and palaeontology there are a number of well-known instances: James Hutton produced an abstract of his ideas on the history of the Earth in 1785, but was stung into publishing his full-length Theory of the Earth in 1795 following criticism leveled at him by various opponents including the Irishman and chemist Richard Kirwan (McIntyre 1997, Wyse Jackson 1998). The two close-friends and stratigraphers Adam Sedgwick and Roderick Impey Murchison, who together named the Devonian in 1839, ultimately fell-out when the latter’s Silurian encroached on the former’s Cambrian successions (Secord 1986). During the so-called ‘Bone-wars’, that raged in the United States during the late-nineteenth century, Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh argued over the reconstructions and significance of many dinosaur specimens that each had discovered (Shor 1974, Jaffe 2000).
