Covid Safety Message All COVID-19 precautions during fittings, rehearsals, and filming were taken during the process. Masks were incorporated into the concept, the number of people allowed on set was limited, and all efforts were taken to maintain social distancing while on and off stage. All props and set pieces were cleaned frequently, and the theatre was aired out on a regular basis. Participants were regularly tested throughout the process and answered a series of questions daily by Covid safety offi- cers in coordination with the daily checks by VCU with guidance from

His last project was The People Who Called, an audio play directed by fellow cast member, Drewe Goldstein (@peoplewhocalled). Recent credits include Forever Plaid at the Hanover Tavern (RTCC Nomination: Best Ensemble); Cinderella (VA Rep), Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (VA Rep); Brightstar (Swift Creek Mill); Little Shop of Horrors (VCU), (VCU); and Heath- ers: The Musical (Firehouse/TheatreLAB) He enjoys drinking coffee and falling off his skateboard but not at the same time. Past VCU mainstage roles include Little Shop of Horrors (Audrey), The Three Musketeers (Queen Anne), Something Wonder- ful (Vocalist), and Into the Woods (Lucinda). Mariah is a Michael Chekhov teaching certification candidate. She is involved with SPARC—she assisted in their 2019 Live Art show and worked on their production of Little Shop of Horrors. Vocal credits include singing at the Tin Pan with Marquee Five and Dan Pardo and backup vocals for artists such as Sara Bareilles, Jason Maraz, Josh Groban, Rayvon Owen, MILCK, and Hanson. Mariah is a vocalist, choreographer, and treasurer of VCU’s premier a cappella group, The Ramifications. They competed at the ICC A Cappella quarterfinal where Mariah was awarded best choreography and the group advanced to semifinals. You can listen to their music on Apple Music and Spotify. HANNA CLINTON (Marianna) is so excited to make her VCU mainstage debut in such a meaningful piece. Most recently she musically directed and choreographed High School Musical Jr. (HHS) and has spent the last two summers as the Performing Arts Specialist at Camp Hilbert. Her favorite roles include New Wave Girl in Heathers (Firehouse Theatre), Eponine in Les Miserables (Second Stage), and Olive in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (TDHS). She would like to thank all her loved ones for their unconditional support in her journey and hopes everyone can find their own purple summer.

ZOË DEAN (Anna) is a senior pursuing her BFA in Theatre with a concentration in performance and a minor in sociology. Other acting credits include Evil Gabbi in She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms (VCU), Nia in In the Red and Brown Water (VCU), and Rose Alvarez in Bye Bye Birdie (Loudoun County HS). She is thrilled to perform in one of her favorite musicals, and is so thankful to the Spring Awakening team for making it happen! She would also like to thank her friends, family, and Grant for all the support!

SCOTT DITTMAN (The Adult Men) is a member of SAG-AFTRA as well as a former company member with the Los Angeles based National American Shakespeare Company. During his time with the NASC he performed in fifteen plays and directed twelve, along with numerous appearances in film and television. Dittman returned to his home in Florida in 2011 to attend the University of Central Florida, where he earned his BA in Theatre Studies with a minor in Education. During his time back in Florida, he spent two years as Artistic Director for Arts in Motion, a youth theatre group, and directed two plays along with two summer camps. Currently Scott is an adjunct professor and MFA candidate here at VCU and an adjunct professor at John Tyler Community College. KHADIJAH FRANKS (Thea) is in her final semester at VCUarts Theatre and is so happy to be able to finally share this experience with you after a year-long hiatus. Some of her latest works include The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (independent, dir. Drewe Goldstein), An Octoroon (TheatreLAB), and Eclipsed (VCU). She’s grateful for this opportunity to safely bring this show together and thanks the entire cast and crew for making this production both safe and enjoyable. ERICA HUGHES (The Adult Women) is an instructor of Voice & Speech at VCU and JTCC, as well as a private voice/dialect/ text coach for clients nationwide. In Richmond, she has worked with Virginia Rep, RTP, Firehouse Theatre, TheatreLAB, University of Richmond, CAT, and Quill Theatre. Nationally, she has coached for the Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre, Chesapeake Shakespeare, Pride Films & Plays, Round House Theatre, Olney Theater Center, Appalachian Center for the Arts, and the National Speech & Debate Association, among other institutions. Erica has an M.F.A. in Theatre Pedagogy/Stage Voice & Speech from VCU, and has received additional training from Carnegie Mellon University, Denison University, the Gaiety School of Acting (Dublin, Ireland), and the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. JET JAMESON (Melitta) is a third-year senior, graduating this May with a degree in Theatre and Content Creation with a concentration in choreography. She’s been seen in Richmond performing in The Consoling Mechanism (VA Rep) and Rocky Horror (RTP). Jet has also choreographed and directed with SALT and is currently producing and choreographing with FADED productions. Starting this summer, she will be attending the Atlantic School for Acting for graduate school. She’d like to thank her Momma, her brothers, and her partner Lennon, for getting her through this year. ASJAH JANECE (Martha) began to love theater at the age of five when she saw her first musical, Grease. Now at age twenty two, Asjah has performed in various shows and is graduating this semester with a Bachelor of Fine arts in Theatre with a concentration in performance. This is her third and final mainstage performance at VCU. You may have seen her previously in TheatreLAB’s An Octoroon. Special thanks to my Mom for supporting me in everything I do and to my daughter Junie.

SETH LYONS (Ernst) is a senior at VCU and has performed in many VCU mainstage productions. Past mainstage roles include The Witch in Into the Woods and an Urchin in Little Shop Of Horrors. He is also a tenor in VCU’s collegiate a cappella group “The Ramifications.” Seth previously performed in multiple productions in the RVA theatre community which include: HONK! (Va Rep), Before It Hits Home (RTP), and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (SPARC). Seth is excited to be in such a talented cast and hopes that the audience enjoys the show. KYLEE MARQUEZ-DOWNIE (Wendla) is thrilled to finally be making her VCU mainstage debut, despite the year-long delay! She has recently been seen as Dolly in Santa’s Enchanted Workshop (VA Rep), Cosette in Les Misérables (Westfield Summer Stage), and as Lois in You Have the Right to Remain Dead (VCU SALT). She is currently Associate Director of El Eterno Femenino, Farsa at Firehouse Theatre. ELIJAH WILLIAMS (Georg) is a junior pursuing a BFA in Theatre with a concentration in performance at VCU. He is so excited to finally be performing this show, more than a year in the making. Elijah has previously been seen as Joe Jr./Jerry in Grey Gardens (RTP), El-Fayoumy in Last Days of Judas Iscariot (ind. dir. Drewe Godlstein) and Jason/Tyrone in Hand to God (VCU SALT). He has also performed in previous VCU mainstage productions, as a vocal soloist in Something Wonderful, and Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

THE ARTISTIC TEAM

KIKAU ALVARO^* (Director / Choreographer) is thrilled to finally bring Spring Awaken- ing to VCU. At VCU Kikau has directed and choreographed Spama- lot, Into the Woods, Something Wonderful, and Little Shop of Horrors. He is Co-Head of Undergraduate Performance and Head of at VCU in addition to Associate Artistic Director of Virginia Repertory Theatre. At the Rep, recent direction and choreography credits include A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and (Richmond Theatre Critics Circle award for Choreography). Kikau serves as a member of the Richmond Triangle Player’s Artistic Committee. Previously at RTP he provided choreography for It Shoulda Been You and the Regional Premiere of The View Upstairs. He has worked for Theatreworks in Palo Alto, CA, providing direction and choreogra- phy for productions of Big River (starring Tony Winner James Monroe Iglehart), The Trouble With Doug (New Works Festival), Fly By Night (World Premiere), and [title of show] (West Coast Premiere). Kikau is an Associate Member of Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), serves on the board for Musical Theatre Educators Alliance (MTEA), and is also a member of Actor’s Equity Association (AEA). He lives in Scott’s Addition with his husband Derrick and their puppy, Boggnes.

ANTHONY SMITH (Musical Director) is the Music Supervisor and Musical Director in Res- idence for Virginia Repertory Theatre in Richmond, Virginia. Formally educated in flute, piano, vocal, and percussion performance, Anthony has won several regional and national competitions on each of his in- struments, and has had the privilege of studying with and participat- ing in masterclasses led by some of the the top artists in the world. An active proponent of new music, Anthony has been involved in the world premieres of several new musicals and operas, most recently Atlantis by Matthew Lee Robinson, Ken Cerniglia, and Scott Morris, The Snow Maiden by Andrew Haile Austin and Kept by Kristin Kuster and Megan Levad. He’s also a frequent collaborator of the Chamber Mu- sic Society of Virginia, The Virginia Chorale, and the Virginia Arts Festival. Mr. Smith is a strong believer in the importance of music ed- ucation, and in addition to his work with the Education Department at Virginia Rep, he maintains an active private studio comprised of flute, percussion, piano, and voice students. He has also focused on colle- giate education, providing musical direction for Virginia Commonwealth University, The College of William and Mary, and the University of Richmond. Anthony resides in Richmond with his spouse, fiber artist Mi- chael-Birch Pierce, and their three dogs: Aurora, Bracket, and . DORIE BARTON (Film Director) made her debut as writer-director with the feature film “Girl Flu” which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2016 and went on to become a festival hit, screening at over 30 festivals worldwide, garnering many awards including the Audience Award in the New Director category at the Nashville Film Festival. Barton’s second feature, “Welcome to the Show,” had its world premiere at Cinequest Film Festival (2021) and will be released in the Fall. “WTTS” was specifically written for Barton’s acting students at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she earned her MFA in Theatre (2020), teaches Acting for the Camera, and directs Senior Showcase. In the Fall of 2020, Barton co-directed the filmed/virtual version of “She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms” for VCUarts Theatre, which has received recognition for excellence from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. As an actor, Barton has been seen in countless television shows from daytime drama to multi-cam sitcoms, major motion pictures, and indie favorites. Barton has performed onstage for much of her life as an award- winning actor, including originating the role of Edith in Charles Busch’s “Die, Mommie, Die!” and starring as Alice in The Blank Theater’s “Lobster Alice,” for which she won Best Actor from the L.A. Drama Critics Circle. Barton graduated from California Institute of the Arts with a BFA in Theater and she remains a proud member of the Evidence Room Theater Company in Los Angeles. CHRIS RAINTREE (Scenic Designer) is a freelance scenic designer in Richmond and Interim Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. His scenic education includes a BFA from VCU and an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University. His designs have won awards from the South Eastern Theatre Conference, the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, and the Richmond Theatre Critics Circle. He was given the honor of designing CMU’s centennial production of The Wild Party. Select credits include Sense and Sensibility (VCU); A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Mr. Popper’s Penguins (VirginiaRep); Passing Strange, Songs From Bedlam, Desire Under The Elms (FirehouseTheatre); Moth, A Doll’s House (TheatreLAB); An Act of God, Seven Homeless Mammoths (Richmond Triangle Players) AUDREY REED (Costume Designer) is in her third and final year as a costume design MFA student at VCU. She’s excited to see Spring Awakening finally bloom to life after so long on hold and is thankful to everyone that made it happen. Her bachelor’s degree is from Middle Tennessee State University with a major in Japanese and a minor in Theater Design. Her past works include Mary Poppins at Cultural Arts Murfreesboro and The Taste of Sunrise at Middle Tennessee State University. Audrey would like to give a big thank you to everyone in the Costume Shop for all of their hard work on this production. EMILY STEINMILLER (Lighting Designer) graduated from VCU with a Bachelors in Fine Arts in 2020. She is thankful for the opportunity to come back to VCU and finish her lighting design for Spring Awakening. Emily is excited to continue her lighting career theatres open again. She would also like to thank her friends, family, and professors for their continued support throughout the years, especially after graduation.

TYLER SCHEERSCHMIDT (Film Editor) graduated from the VCU Cinema Program in 2018, and in the same year co-founded & launched his film production company Out of Sight Creative, LLC. In the years following graduation, Tyler has worked in Richmond as a music video director, cinematographer, and editor. He spent much of his time in quarantine co-editing his first feature film, Welcome to the Show (Dir. Dorie Barton) and working with VCUarts Theatre editing their first virtual production,She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms. Tyler now works as a video editor for the Joe Biden campaign, and is the CEO of Hourglass Sessions, a live music video series shooting in Richmond.

SARAH COOK (Co-Props Master) is a second year student pursuing her BFA at VCU in Theatre with a concentration in scenic design. She is absolutely thrilled to finally seeSpring Awakening come to life after almost three, long semesters! Sarah worked as Scenic Designer for two productions this Spring— the VCU mainstage production of The Dentist and El Eterno Femenino (recipient of the VCUarts Undergraduate Research Grant). Her other previous mainstage credits at VCU include Assistant Paint Charge for Sense and Sensibility and crew on Machinal. She would like to thank Tomya Pryor for their support and talent. TOMYA PRYOR (Co-Props Master) is a second year student pursuing their BFA at VCU in Theatre with a concentration in scenic design and a minor in psychology. They’re excited to be working on Spring Awakening after watching it hang in limbo for so long! Previous credits include: Designer for Common Wealth & Common Debt (The Conciliation Project), and 2nd Assistant Designer on Machinal (VCUarts Theatre). They are currently working on an ongoing design project: Performance Check (VCUart Undergraduate Research Grant Project), a serial livestream performance art piece which you can find out more about @performancecheckdnd on all social media platforms! JENNY MALE (Intimacy Consultant) is a Fight and Intimacy Director based in the DC/ Baltimore area. Recent credits include Newsies, Celia and Fidel (Arena Stage), (Ford’s Theatre), The 39 Steps (Constellation Theatre Company), Bloomsday (Washington Stage Guild), Agnes of God, Lela & Co. (Factory 449), and E2, Kill Move Paradise, True West (Rep Stage). Jenny is a certified Intimacy Director with Intimacy Directors & Coordinators and a Certified Teacher with the Society of American Fight Directors. She is Associate Professor of Theatre at Howard Community College and Resident Fight and Intimacy Director for Rep Stage. Jenny earned her MFA in Theatre Pedagogy from VCU in 2002. CRIMSON PIAZZA (Co-Production Stage Manager) was on this production the first time as an ASM, but got a promotion the second time around. He will graduate in May with his BFA in Stage Management. This process would not have been possible without his Co-PSM Gracelyn Shalaski, and he is very grateful she came back for this version of the production. Crimson’s other PSM credits include Matilda the Musical (Dogwood Dell), She Loves Me (SPARC), and The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (independent, dir. Drewe Goldstein). He also worked as an ASM on VCU’s productions of Eclipsed, Something Wonderful, during the original rehearsals of Spring Awakening, and was a PA for Little Shop of Horrors and The Two Gentleman of Verona. He is very happy that this production and the hard work of everyone involved is finally able to be shown to the world.

GRACELYN SHALASKI (Co-Production Stage Manager) started this adventure two years ago as the PSM before she graduated with her BFA in Stage Management last May. She is delighted to be Co-PSMing this version of the production with the lovely Crimson Piazza and truly could not do it without him. Since graduating, Gracelyn went to work remotely for Westport Country Playhouse as an intern and moved to New York City. Prior to graduation, some of Gracelyn’s most notable PSM credits include The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (independent, dir. Drewe Goldstein), Eclipsed (VCU), and In the Red and Brown Water (VCU). She also worked at VCU as the ASM for The Wolves, and PA for Legally Blonde and A Time to Kill. The department originally planned Spring Awakening as part of our 2019-2020 mainstage season, but production abruptly stopped in March 2020 when the pandemic hit and theaters were closed worldwide. The team decided to move to a filmed version in Summer 2020, but in the interest of safety, waited to resume production until Spring 2021.

This production of Spring Awakening extends special recognition to all of the collaborators who were unable to join from 1.0 or who switched roles. Your work made 2.0 possible, and this production could not have been completed without you.

This production is entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). The aims of this national theater education program are to identify and promote quality in college-level theater production. To this end, each production entered is eligible for a response by a regional KCACTF representative, and selected students and faculty are invited to participate in KCACTF programs involving scholarships, internships, grants and awards for actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, designers, stage managers and critics at both the regional and national levels.

Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for invitation to the KCACTF regional festival and may also be considered for national awards recognizing outstanding achievement in production, design, direction and performance.

Last year more than 1,500 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theater department is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary work produced in college and university theaters across the nation.

RICHARD AND WILLIAM NEWDICK THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP The Richard and William Newdick Theatre Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled in the theatre program in the School of the Arts who has exhibited outstanding engagement in and commitment to theatre. The scholarship will be awarded with preference to students with demonstrable need.

MARVIN SIMS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Eligible students must be theatre students who display individual achievement, academic excellence, financial need and who contribute to the School’s diversity. The Marvin Sims Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by gifts from the family, friends and colleagues of Marvin Sims. A highly respected and talented professional, Marvin was the president of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and of the Black Theatre Network at the time of his death. A former board member of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, he also helped found the Theatre of Diverse Voices at VCU.

THOMAS JOHN KELLER SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FOR THEATRE STUDENTS Student must demonstrate an outstanding work ethic and positive attitude in service to the Theatre Department. Available to Sophomores & Juniors enrolled in the Theatre program. The endowment honors the memory of Thomas Keller, a 2007 alumnus of the School of the Arts. The scholarship was established through a gift from his parents, Rosemary and David C. Keller.

THE KYM FRANKLIN SCHOLARSHIP The scholarship is eligible for VCUarts Theatre students who are majoring in an area of design or technical theatre. The Kym Franklin Scholarship was established in 1999 by the friends and family of Kym Franklin (BFA 1991, magna cum laude) Kym was an accomplished scenic artist and painter who had worked for TheatreVirginia and was the charge artist at Alabama Shakespeare Festival at the time of her death.

JENNIFER JONES HUNDLEY GRADUATE THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP The scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student in the Theatre Department. The Jennifer Jones Hundley Graduate Theatre Scholarship was established in 2005 by Mr. William O. Jones in honor of his daughter’s graduation from the Department of Theatre in December 2005. JETT HIGHAM SCHOLARSHIP FOR COSTUME DESIGN This scholarship is awarded to sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduate student majoring in costume design and enrolled full time., and consideration is based on financial need and portfolio review. This scholarship was established in summer of 2013 in memory of Jett Higham, son of former VCUarts Costume Design faculty member Toni-Leslie James.

THEATREVCU ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP Established and supported by alumni and faculty from the department. Student recipient must be a full time continuing student majoring in Theater the semester the award is given, and the following Spring semester, when the award is distributed.

DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE DESIGN COMPETITION GRANT The Department of Theatre Registration Fees Grant Program, established by Lou Szari, is designed to support VCU Undergraduate Lighting, Scenic, and Costume design students who seek assistance to pay for convention registration fees and design competition entry fees.
