www.southernowls.com Owls’ Women’s Soccer 2005 Outlook

The Owls lost just three seniors from last season but there was one significant off-season change in the Southern lineup. After founding the women’s program in 1996 and guiding the Owls through their first nine seasons, head coach Jim O’Brien left to become the head women’s coach at .

Southern didn’t have to go too far to find a new head coach as Owls’ men’s assistant Adam Cohen was appointed by Director of Athletics Patricia Nicol.

Cohen’s task has been made easier by the return of a pair of Northeast-10 Conference second team selections from 2004 -- midfielder Carlene Holness and forward Cristina DelBuono. Holness is a solid, physical player and is a key to the team’s defense, which Cohen feels will be a team strength.

DelBuono, a team captain, was the Owls’ third-leading scorer a year ago with eight goals and five assists and has scored 20 goals in three seasons. She gets help from junior Theresa Viscardi, who scored a team-leading 11 goals in 2004 and help is expected up front from freshman Gina DellaRose, who starred at Woodlands Regional High.

Joining Holness in the midfield are junior Ali Ahearn and sophomores Molly DesJarlais and Allison Barker. Natalie Polnik and Katie Killebrew are the leading freshman prospects along with redshirt freshman Janell Manicini.

Team captains Jenny McCormack and Jen St. George will help anchor the defense along with sophomore AnnMarie Janes. Junior Beth Gandley has been a two-year starter while seniors Amber Meimers and Eileen Tracy offer Cohen additional options.

Junior Stephanie McGinley, who played in just five games a year ago, takes over in the goal with backup help from Amanda Marchetti and Pilar Rodriguez.

Adam Cohen is in his first season as the head women’s soccer coach at Southern Connecti- cut State University. Cohen, a resident of Cheshire, Conn., has been an assistant with the Southern men’s pro- gram for the past three seasons. A 1995 gradu- ate of where he earned a bachelors degree in Business Management, he earned all-conference rec- ognition as a goalkeeper for the Bobcats. The Guilford High School gradu- ate earned all-state honors as a goalkeeper. Cohen has also developed quite a coaching resume around the New Haven area over the last several years, directing numerous area high schools and working with the South Central soccer program. He has an “A” coaching license to go along with a National Youth coaching license, as Cohen is also a member of the Olympic Developmental Program (ODP) staff and is an assessor for the United State Youth Soccer regional staff.

CONFERENCE HISTORY Now in its third decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has established itself as one of the premier all-around NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. The NE- 10 is now the second largest Division II Conference in the country with 15 members from five New England states and New York. Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the charter members were American International College, Assumption College, Bentley College, Bryant College, the University of Hartford, Springfield College and Stonehill College. St. Anselm College was admitted in 1981 and Merrimack joined the conference in 1984 replacing Hart- ford, which moved to Division I. The conference expanded to 10 teams in 1987 with the addition of Quinnipiac and St. Michael's. Springfield and Quinnipiac later left the con- ference but were replaced by Le Moyne College and Pace University. The present 15-school membership was established in 2000 with Franklin Pierce, UMass Lowell, Southern New Hampshire, St. Rose and Southern Connecticut joining the NE-10. The Conference sponsors 23 championships including football, men's and women's soccer, field hockey, volleyball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's cross country, golf, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's and women's lacrosse, men’s , men’s and women’s swimming, and indoor and outdoor tracks for men and women.
