Fans of The Simpsons Hank Azaria know him as the man behind the voices of ill-tempered bartender Moe Syzslak, gluttonous police chief Chauncey Wiggum, sad-sack Comic Book Guy, hillbilly Cletus Spuckler and America’s favorite convenience store clerk, Apu (“Thank you come again”) Nahasapeemapetilon. Azaria’s over- the-top film roles include fork-flinging superhero The Blue Raja ( Mystery Men ), 1950s sports legend Patches O’Houlihan ( Dodge Ball ), megalo- maniacal pharaoh Kahmunrah ( Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian ) and inept houseboy Agador Spartacus ( The Birdcage ). Scripps collaborates with Amazon Advertising to bring Amazon’s premium OTT offerings to local businesses May 18, 2021 CINCINNATI – Further accelerating its leadership in the over-the-top (OTT) space, The E.W. Scripps Company (NASDAQ: SSP) is collaborating with Amazon Advertising to bring its OTT advertising offerings to local businesses. As part of this new initiative, Scripps’ Octane OTT sales team and Amazon Advertising will work together to sell Amazon OTT inventory across IMDb TV, livestreaming service Twitch, top-tier network and broadcaster apps and Amazon’s News apps to local businesses. Amazon OTT and Twitch jointly reach an unduplicated monthly audience of 120 million viewers across the U.S. Scripps launched Octane OTT in 2019 as a platform for local advertisers to reach cord-cutting audiences across a variety of premium OTT video brands and services. “Scripps’ collaboration with Amazon Advertising underscores our commitment to help local advertisers engage hard-to-reach consumers and extend the value of their media investment,” said Missy Evenson, vice president of sales for Scripps’ Local Media. “As television advertisers look for ways to reach cord- cutter and cord-never audiences, incremental reach becomes key to any campaign’s success. This initiative is consistent with our commitment to deliver the highest quality brand-safe inventory to our customers while helping them engage these essential audiences.” Scripps’ new sales initiative with Amazon Advertising is its latest move to serve local buyers in the OTT advertising space, following its recent roll out of Octane Verify, an integrated linear and OTT attribution solution that measures the effectiveness of Scripps Octane OTT and linear TV campaigns.

  • Comedians, Characters, Cable Guys & Copyright Convolutions
Legal Lessons in On-Stage Character Development: Comedians, Characters, Cable Guys & Copyright Convolutions Clay Calvert⊗ ABSTRACT This article addresses the trials and tribulations faced by stand-up comedians who seek copyright protection for on-stage characters they create, often during solo performances. The article initially explores the current, confused state of the law surrounding the copyrightability of fictional characters. The doctrinal muddle is magnified for comedians because the case law that addresses the fictional character facet of copyright jurisprudence overwhelmingly involves characters developed within the broader framework of plots and storylines found in traditional media artifacts such as books, comic strips, cartoons and movies. The article then deploys the 2014 federal court ruling in Azaria v. Bierko as a timely analytical springboard for addressing comedic-character copyright issues. Finally, the article offers multiple tips and suggestions for comedians and actors seeking copyright protection in their on- stage characters. I. INTRODUCTION The Whacky World of Jonathan Winters aired on television from 1972 through 1974.1 The humor of its star, Jonathan Winters,2 came primarily “from his construction of outrageously fantastic situations and characters.”3 Those characters included the Oldest Airline Stewardess4 and, perhaps most notably, ⊗ Professor & Brechner Eminent Scholar in Mass Communication and Director of the Marion B. • Amazon and IMDB Sued for Not Respecting Elders | Page 1
Amazon And IMDB Sued FOr Not Respecting Elders | Page 1 Amazon And IMDB Sued FOr Not Respecting Elders By: Jack Greiner on October 19, 2011 on graydon.law Well, sort of. An actress who identifies herself as Jane Doe has sued the Internet Movie Database Web site, and its parent company, Amazon, for revealing her actual age. I’m not making that up. Here’s the actual complaint, which was filed in a federal court in Seattle. In case you haven’t used it, IMDB is a Web site that has detailed information on any movie ever made. I personally love it. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve watched a movie on TV and wondered who the actor was in some small role, and where I’d seen him before. IMDB has all that information. But I digress. According to the complaint, Jane Doe is of Asian descent, and her given name is difficult for Americans to spell and pronounce. She has for that reason used a stage name throughout her career. She is also very careful not to provide personal information, including her true age. According to the complaint, “[i]n the entertainment industry, youth is king. If one is perceived to be “over-the-hill” i.e., approaching 40, it is nearly impossible for an up-and-coming actress, such as plaintiff, to get work.” IMDB also offers a service called IMDbPro, which offers “industry insider” information to paying customers. Ms. Doe signed up for the service and in so doing, provided her name, birth date and other personal information.

  • 'House Hunters: Comedians on Couches'
HGTV SPOTLIGHTS COMEDIANS AND THEIR HOUSE-HUNTING COMMENTARY IN NEW JUNE SERIES ‘HOUSE HUNTERS: COMEDIANS ON COUCHES’ New York [May 18, 2020] Fans who miss televised live events and the pithy professional commentary that comes with them can now look to HGTV to fill that void with its new, highly anticipated series House Hunters: Comedians on Couches (fka House Hunters: LOL). In a four- night, star-studded special event at 10 and 10:30 p.m. ET/PT from Tuesday, June 2, through Friday, June 5, America’s favorite contactless past time—watching and commenting on House Hunters—gets a fun new twist when seven popular comedians deliver hilarious, no holds barred, color commentary on classic episodes of the hit series. Together via videoconference, the entertainers will call out the victories and agonizing defeats caused by paint colors, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and open concept spaces. The House Hunters: Comedians on Couches celebrity lineup is led by Dan Levy and Natasha Leggero and features their comedian friends Whitney Cummings, Eliot Glazer, John Mulaney, Chris Redd and J.B. Smoove. “House Hunters is a pop culture phenomenon that inspires strong reactions from viewers who like to play along with its familiar house selection process,” said Jane Latman, president, HGTV. “While we may not agree with the house each family chooses or the reasons they select it, we can agree that it’s a good time to lean on talented people who can find the humor in everything and make us laugh out loud—even when it comes to the challenges and triumphs of house hunting.” And, the comedic fun on the couch supports a good cause.
