Chalice Handbell Team Commitments Christmas 2018.

This year we had a very serious thinking session as to whether, with my health problems, we should even offer to take 'Near Christmas' bookings but we were encouraged to do so by a sudden rush of phone calls asking us to visit both previously visited, as well as 'new visit' care homes. As a result we have been quite busy.

If anyone would like to give us any other booking dates now or throughout the year, we are open to offers! We do not charge but willingly accept contributions to our chosen charity for the year 2018 Weston Hospice). A cuppa and any other refreshment is always welcome, as are any new recruits after these Christmas bookings.

Please phone Geoff. or Eleanor on 01934 834550. 3

Lucky winners of the village lotto in September and October were Ros Woodward, Graham Daniel, Pam Thomas, Gill Baque, Pete Briscoe, Sylvia Price, Jude Simmons, Hugh Edwards and Alan Saunders. Please give Olive Lawrence a call (on 01934-833186) or pop in to see her at the village Post Office on Tuesday mornings if you want to take part or to find out more. 4 Tiffin Cafe at Bullock Farm

We are very excited to announce that we will be welcoming Tiffin to the café at Bullock Farm from mid-March 2019. Many of you will already know them from the lovely ‘Tiffin at the Pier’ and ‘Tiffin at the Beach’ in where they have built up an excellent reputation for their fabulous food and great customer service over the last few years. If you don’t already know them, you are in for a treat! You can follow this link to their website and press announcement to get your mouth watering in anticipation! https://www.tiffingroup.com/news/launch-the-farm/ We’ll post updates on our website https://www.bullockfarm.co.uk/24/Facilities

Coming Soon - Tiffin Café at Bullock Farm Tiffin Group are delighted to announce the latest addition to their unique portfolio of venues, with the opening in mid-March 2019 of ‘Tiffin Café @ Bullock Farm.' Located at Bullock Farm in picturesque Kingston Seymour, this fully licensed 35 seat indoor/40 seat outdoor delightfully located venue, will continue the Tiffin theme of serving locally sourced produce in Tiffin style. It will operate Monday to Sunday daytimes, with later summer evening closing to enjoy that cool glass of white wine or locally produced beer and cider.

Nick Wring, Tiffin Group Marketing and Development Director said, ‘Bullock Farm location situated 10 minutes drive from our Clevedon venues with parking for 50 cars makes perfect sense as an alternative destination for our guests. It enables us to continue the popular coffee and cake style offer enjoyed at our Beach venue, while extending the food to serve good farm style cooking utilising all the fabulous regional produce we have sourced for years, all within a few miles radius. Sundays will be all about creating a terrific homestyle roast lunch, and there is the interesting seasonal option to also retail the local veg and produce we use every day. Bullock Farm whose name dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086, is already well known for its top-quality fishing lakes, cottages and campsite and we thank Farm owners Philip and Jude Simmons for working with us on making it possible. We are super excited about creating over time yet another welcoming and unique destination for our guests.’ ‘The Farm’ as it will be fondly known on their web site www.tiffingroup.com will be the 7th addition to the Tiffin Group portfolio, joining ‘The Beach’ and ‘The Pier’ venues in Clevedon, along with their Jersey venues ‘The Museum’, ‘The Brasserie’, ‘The Marina’ and ‘Infusion’. 5 All Saints Flower Guild

Christmas is coming…..

…… and it’s now frighteningly close! There’s little we can do to help you with most of the hard work to come but that wonderful tradition, the Kingston Seymour Christmas Post, can help with the delivery of all the cards you’re sending to other people in the village. The poster on the back of this magazine has all the details. Please don’t forget to put a little more than a name on the envelope, an address is required! Judy and Robin do a marvellous job sorting all the cards and delivering many of them themselves. With typically more than two thousand of them, however, they can’t do it all unaided. We have some help lined up with the sorting, but they’d be very grateful for volunteers to deliver 6 some of the cards around the village. Please call them on 832612 if you can help – even if it’s just a few near your own home. If you are not able to make it on the day please call this number as they are delighted to have some of them in advance – to reduce the chances of being buried in an avalanche of cards on the day! Have a great Christmas. Graham Daniel

A note from Mike Wallis......

On the 14th November 2018, I tendered my resignation as a member of the Kingston Seymour Parish Council.

I have represented the village on the parish council for over ten years and joined because I felt it was important to have a representative on the council with a rural background. I have lived and worked in the village all of my life, and I believe that I am probably the least travelled outside the village, however I am surely the most travelled in the village.

The reasons for my resignation are as follows:

North Council was invited to draw up a road safety plan in response to villagers concerns regarding speeding traffic in the village area. In this plan there were a number of road markings to be placed in the most rural parts of the village where there is very little traffic, and this included six ‘slow’ markings. I gave these some thought and then I realised that they were all along the proposed Weston to Clevedon Cycle Way. In my view Council were using the road safety plan for their own benefit.

I attended a council meeting at which only four of the seven councillors were present. The councillors voted in favour of the plan which will cost in excess of £4,800 and this will be financed by the parish, with no contribution from North Somerset Council. It was at this point that I resigned and further reasons are below.

1. These markings would have an adverse effect on the rural character of our village, and it is against government guidance 2. The village would be financing these road markings etc., for the Cycle Way, of over £1,000

The parish council has been concerned about the increase in traffic through and around the village as people will access the Cycle Way through the village. 7 There will be access from Weston Super Mare directly into the village for the first time. In conclusion, I find the support of the council for these proposals, unacceptable.

Playing Cards for Pudsey

Every year since 2002, many bridge clubs across the UK (and a few further afield) have devoted a club evening to Children in Need, raising more than £1 million in that time – from simply playing cards!

Each participating club plays on one of five days, with their results being merged with those from every other club playing on that day (with everyone playing the same hands) to produce an overall result. This year, the Kingston Seymour Bridge Club took part for the first time. We equalled our club record turnout of ten tables (that’s 40 players) and were one of more than 100 clubs playing on the Tuesday. We collected £195 in table money and, largely due to the Village Hall committee generously agreeing to waive their normal hire fee, every penny has been donated to Children in Need – with gift aid likely to add 25% to that figure.

The final consolidated result has still to be confirmed but, at the time of writing, one of our pairs (Joe and Daphne Patrick) were lying seventh out of more than 1900 pairs playing on the night, a little higher than me. It was a most enjoyable evening. Graham Daniel, Club Chairman

Cheryl Sewell is making up the list of participants. If your child or you know a child who may not be on that list and wants to join in, please do let her know by ringing 01934 830504, message on Facebook or email [email protected]

Kingston Seymour Parish Council

Just a short one this month as I’m sure the magazine will be bristling with exciting events for the Christmas season so first, an update on the BIG FOUR.

Road Safety. A working group of Councillors met with NSC Highways officials at the locations proposed for enhancement and came back with recommendations for the main council. Separately, it was confirmed by NSC Highways that the changes we wanted would be supported by them, but only if we paid for them from Parish Council funds and estimates have been provided. We have also been advised that these changes will not happen in this Financial Year (ends on 31 March 2019) because neither North Somerset or Skanska (their contractor) have any spare capacity. Extensions to the gates can be progressed as we do not need NSC for this work.

Your Councillors have voted and agreed on a wide portfolio of TRAFFIC CALMING measures on Lampley Road, Back Lane, Middle Lane, Ham Lane, Broadstone and New Cut Bow. These have been conveyed to NSC for inclusion in their plans for the next Financial Year (April 2019 – March 2020). Please see the Draft Minutes of the 14th November Council meeting for details and the website for location maps.

Cycle Route. The planning application has been lodged and was discussed at the special Council meeting we held on the 24th November. Your Councillors used that meeting to gather your views on this so that we were able to submit a formal response on behalf of the Parish by the deadline of the 4th December. This submission will be available on the 9 website. We understand the application will go to the NSC Planning Committee on 12th December. (For a link to the planning information, public comments or to add your own comment please see page 15 of the magazine. Editor)

Coastal Footpath. Natural – who are the sponsors of this – tell me that they have finished negotiations with landowners and that they will be publishing a report early in the new year which we will get sight of. The footpath will share the Tutshill Sluice with the Cycle Route but otherwise remains separate through the western edge of the village. As with the cycle route, we are concerned that access to the path is likely to attract more cars into the village.

Fracking. We have notified the licensed company that we have declared ourselves “frack free” and this notice has been acknowledged. We have also responded to two Government consultations to do with this industry and have copied Dr. Fox into both – making sure he understands our overall position. We are at the very bottom edge of his constituency but have pointed out that underground activity could well head north and east from any site that ever got started in our Parish.

With Fracking commencing in Lancashire recently, we must remain informed and vigilant if we are to keep KS “frack free”.

Other village news in brief: - The Police have advised us that there has been a spate of burglaries in North Somerset recently where the objective was to find the keys to high performance cars that had been left at homes. In 75% of the cases so far, the owners had been on holiday. Please secure all of your belongings and don’t advertise your whereabouts on social media because it won’t only be your friends who are looking in!

- So many people helped make the Battle’s Over commemorations a success so, on behalf of the parish council we would like to publicly thank Sue Thomas, Avril Gaunt, Jane Bell, Sue Hyde, Andy Gillam, John Harris, Ed Brooks, Jo Fenna-Brown, Anita Simmons and Mark Humphries – together with everyone who in turn supported them and made the events over the weekend so memorable. Thank you all!

10 - On Thursday 2nd May 2019 there will be local elections for your District Councillors and Parish Councillors. If this is a role that you might be interested in, think about it now and look out for announcements of the relevant nomination forms in March 2019.

Please contact me if you have any comments or questions about any of the above or anything else about the village. In the meantime, I hope that you and yours have the Christmas and New Year period – in whatever form it takes - that you hope for!

Seasonal Regards

Steve Dixon, Parish Clerk

Thank You from Diana and Warren Williams

Diana and I write to express our grateful thanks and appreciation for all the wonderful cards that have been sent to us on my/our retirement and for the many gracious written comments therein.

We thank you also for the huge special card signed by so many and for numerous individual and corporate gifts as well.

Our last services were most memorable, and we shall never forget the magnificent farewell Tea provided for us in St. Mary’s Chapter House on our final Sunday with you and for the warm words of appreciation given on behalf of everyone expressed by Tim. I am grateful to Tim for his warm support throughout my house for duty ministry and also to dear colleagues and friends serving within the ministerial team as well as to dear churchwardens past and present, YM church council and local sub-committee of that council representing All Saints and St. John the Evangelist local parishes. Diana has asked me to thank you for the huge bouquet of flowers given to her and both of us are most grateful for the very generous cheque presented to us before our departure. We are also grateful for the privilege of having had the opportunity to serve in the parish of Yatton Moor and the two church communities of All Saints and St. John the Evangelist, Kenn for the last five and a half years and for the lasting friendships which each of us have made. We go with grateful hearts and very fond memories.

God bless you all. Warren and Diana 11

Church Notes

All Saints Sunday, Patronal Sunday, was celebrated quietly this year with a very moving, interactive service led by Tim Scott, Team Rector for our Yatton Moor Parish. Thank you Tim, it was a different approach with very positive feed-back and very much appreciated.

Remembrance Weekend this year really will be remembered. Congratulations and huge thanks to everyone involved in leading and organising the whole event. The Concert in church on the Friday was fabulous, so much local talent - but it was the children who stole the show. Thank you Susie and Mark for putting the programme together and to all of you, especially the children. A special big thank you to Avril for a wonderful Remembrance Service, starting at the War Memorial and finishing in church. I'm sure it took a great deal of thought and time particularly in bringing so many people together to share thoughts and stories of those dreadful days. It was a service of reflection and of honouring all who sacrificed in so many ways, but it also offered hope as we look forward. Thank you for the amazing decorations and placements, the poppies made and also to the lovely catering crew who served up coffee and cake all day Saturday and again after Sunday's service. 14

Grateful thanks to Anthony Hawks for renewing the car park Notice Board and to those who helped tidy the churchyard. And grateful thanks as well, to all the Autumn Clean team - lots of help and the church looks fresh and clean again.

Last evening the Flower Guild held a Wreath Making workshop. It was a fabulous night, great fun and 24 people, nearly all from outside the village, went home very happily with a beautiful Christmas wreath for their homes. Well done and thank you particularly to the younger mums for your leadership and enthusiasm.

Christmas Services will be circulated on a separate sheet but briefly: Sunday 2nd December 11am Christingle Service Friday 21st December 7.30pm Candlelit Carol Service Christmas Eve 5pm Crib Service Christmas Eve 11.30pm Candlelit Midnight Mass

Look forward to seeing you. Sue Thomas and John Allday

Burns Night

Details in the new Year

And finally thank you to Steve Dixon and the Parish council for arranging an extra Parish Council meeting to take feedback on the plans submitted by North Somerset County Council for a 1.6 km Cycle Track over the river Yeo at Yeo Bank Farm. Steve gave us an excellent presentation with maps to orientate us and to make us think about the impact on the village. Many interesting points were made by villagers for the Parish Councils response to North Somerset regarding the plan. For more information or to make a comment yourself go on the North Somerset web site and look for planning application 18/P/4758/FUL.
