Williamson Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Glasgow Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies 2008 (Submitted May 2008) © Lisa E. Williamson 2008 2 Abstract Contentious Comedy: Negotiating Issues of Form, Content, and Representation in American Sitcoms of the Post-Network Era This thesis explores the way in which the institutional changes that have occurred within the post-network era of American television have impacted on the situation comedy in terms of form, content, and representation. This thesis argues that as one of television’s most durable genres, the sitcom must be understood as a dynamic form that develops over time in response to changing social, cultural, and institutional circumstances. By providing detailed case studies of the sitcom output of competing broadcast, pay-cable, and niche networks, this research provides an examination of the form that takes into account both the historical context in which it is situated as well as the processes and practices that are unique to television. In addition to drawing on existing academic theory, the primary sources utilised within this thesis include journalistic articles, interviews, and critical reviews, as well as supplementary materials such as DVD commentaries and programme websites. This is presented in conjunction with a comprehensive analysis of the textual features of a number of individual programmes. By providing an examination of the various production and scheduling strategies that have been implemented within the post-network era, this research considers how differentiation has become key within the multichannel marketplace.

  • A Critical Analysis of the Dixie Chicks and the Country Music Industry
ABSTRACT WE’RE CHANGING THE WAY WE DO BUSINESS: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DIXIE CHICKS AND THE COUNTRY MUSIC INDUSTRY by Justine Frances Stokes Over the last fifteen years, the Dixie Chicks have become one of country music’s most successful acts. However, the relationship between the band and the country music industry became strained following anti-war comments by lead singer Natalie Maines in March of 2003. This project analyzes this relationship from a feminist political economic perspective to examine how an apparent conservative ideology within the country music industry has impacted the career of the Dixie Chicks. By analyzing the various albums the Dixie Chicks have released since 1997 and the subsequent ways the band and their albums were marketed by their record company, questions raised about how women within country music are portrayed and treated by country music are investigated, along with how the Dixie Chicks may have subverted the treatment. • The Pioneer Was Ethel, and Later on Came Rhoda. but Sitcom Sidekicks of the '90S Are Neither Frumpy Nor Frowzy
TELEVISION; They've Come a Long Way; The pioneer was Ethel, and later on came Rhoda. But sitcom sidekicks of the '90s are neither frumpy nor frowzy. These women wear their libidos on their sleeves. Willens, Michele . Los Angeles Times (pre-1997 Fulltext) ; Los Angeles, Calif. [Los Angeles, Calif]26 May 1996: 7. ProQuest document link ABSTRACT (ABSTRACT) The same holds true all these years and trends later. "We balance each other out," says Amy Pietz, one of today's more memorable sidekicks, Annie, on NBC's "Caroline in the City." "Annie is impulsive, to the extreme, and Caroline thinks things out, to the extreme." For viewers, the sidekick is often a favorite character and even can take on epic proportions symbolically. Something about how we see our lot in lives: "I always was Ethel, and I'll always be Rhoda [Morgenstern]," feature film sidekick extraordinaire Rosie O'Donnell has said. Bonnie Hunt, who used to play sidekicks and then starred with one on CBS' recently canceled "Bonnie," is even blunter: "If I couldn't be Dick Van Dyke, I wanted to be Art Carney." One would assume that with "Friends" and all its wannabes, the singular sidekick has been diminished. But there are still more than enough to go around. Aside from Pietz, [Joely] Fisher and [Julie] White, there are Leila Kenzle as Jamie's best friend and now business partner on "Mad About You," Holly Wortell as the makeup artist and best friend on "Bonnie" and Christine Baranski as the perpetually intoxicated and revenge-seeking Maryann on "Cybill." FULL TEXT It is said that Elaine May's million-dollar contribution to the much rewritten script of "Tootsie" was a simple but critical one: Give the lead character a sidekick, she suggested, enabling him/her to have someone to let it all hang out with.
