3RD INTERNATIONAL SEA-THEMED BIENNALE

ME AND THE SEA

ART EVENT GUIDE

JŪRMALA 8 JULY – 29 AUGUST 2021 3RD INTERNATIONAL SEA-THEMED BIENNALE “MARĪNA 2021”

ART EVENT GUIDE

JŪRMALA 8 JULY – 29 AUGUST 2021 Welcome to Jūrmala!

The theme of the Biennale MARĪNA 2021 – Me and the sea – points to the personal relationship each of us has with the sea. Since the ancient times already, the majesty, the destructive force and the mysterious underwater world of the sea has been an inexhaustible source of myths to peoples living by the sea. According to Latvian myths, God and the Devil created the world, using the sludge from the bottom of the sea. Regardless of the origin of the myths, they indicate the close interaction of people and the sea. Today, both science and art strive to look for answers to the following questions: what is the relationship between each of us and nature really like? Is it preserving and future-tended? The union of Me and the sea has a long history and yet – does it also have a never-ending and beautiful future?

The activities of the marine themed Biennale “Marīna 2021” can be enjoyed from the beginning of July until the end of August throug- hout the city all the way from the Open-Air Museum in Buļļuciems to the Forest House in Ķemeri. May there be a lot of inspirational moments in exhibitions and family activities!

“My days pass by one after another like waves of the sea flow to the shore and back,” Anna Rijniece – who actually could not write – wrote to a friend of her youth on August 14, 1935. The sturdy woman, called Anniņa by others, was alongside Latvia’s greatest poets – Rainis and Aspazija – for more than 20 years. For both of them at first, but after Rainis’ death, a housekeeper, dressed in an apron and headkerchief, run the life of Aspazija’s house in Dubulti, located between Lielupe and the sea. The exhibition “Anniņa and the sea” reveals the inner and outer world of the unspoiled woman, using the eternal rhythm of the sea waves as a narrative. Author of the exhibition – artist Linda Jurķe.

Artworks from the museum collection of The Artists’ Union of Latvia (LMS) owns a unique collection of the visual contemporary art works from the second half of the 20th century and now. Founded in 2001, the museum collection of the LMS contains approximately 16,000 items and about 5,000 of them have been granted the status of the National Museum’s collection. The works of the collection are exhibited in the exhibition halls of the LMS and deposited in Latvian museums. This year, the exhibition of classical art of the Biennale from the collection of the LMS Museum will take place in the Ķemeri Forest House. Ķemeri has been affected by major visual changes, while the historical cultural heritage here is valued and respected. Paintings and sculptures selected for the exhibition date back to the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Each author has their own signature, a set of means of expression, and their work has undoubtedly enriched the art space of their time. To mention just a few of the artists included in the exhibition – Lidija Auza, Aleksandrs Zviedris, Rūdolfs Pinnis, Juris Baklāns, Vija Maldupe, Rimma Pancehovska and others. Curator: Jana Rāve.

08/07–29/08 Opening: 08/07 at 5PM

The exhibition “Survivors” looks at the paradox of masculinity through the prism of the sea, a sailor / fisherman. Historically, these professions have been attributed to men and considered particularly masculine. Liminal existence: not really in one or the other living space, wanting to be both at sea and on the land, the sailor had to imagine masculinity in order to be able to function in both spaces. The internal liminal state allowed them to survive and return. Stories of the experienced captains offer not only pain but also irony – as “there’s no crying out in the sea”. The relationship between a boy and the sea from boyhood to adult years is explored in a video interview with Roberts Radionovs from Roja. The survival skill of the sailors was also provided by the experience that was passed down from generation to generation through shanty songs. Shanty songs were collected by musician Helmuts Šembelis. The exhibition includes the video recording by the men’s choir “Dziedonis”, conducted by Einārs Verro. Author of the video materials is Eva Strazdiņa, liminal objects were created by the sculptor Krišjānis Beļavskis, the scenographer of the exhibition is Kristīne Abika. Curator – Inga Bunkše.

09/07–29/08 Opening: 09/07 at 5PM

Following the tradition of the marina genre established by the Dutch masters in the 17th century, contemporary artists also indulge in this passion, and it does not leave indifferent authors of various art media of the younger generation. The works have been submitted by 140 artists from 10 countries and use a very wide arsenal of creative means of expression. Each art work is a visual story of personal communication with the sea and respective emotional experiences. Stories are translated into colours, line rhythms and figural compositions, allowing viewers to interpret and compare these messages with their personal experiences. The jury commission was headed by the Professor Aleksejs Naumovs. The laureates are traditionally announ- ced at the opening of the exhibition, the main prize is presented, and the laureate of the art student category determined. There is also a vote of the audience. Curator of exhibition – Guna Kalnača.

09/07–29/08 Opening: 09/07 at 6:30PM

The sea illuminates us. Just like black and white photography – leave out the excess. Photography is being in a space of time where momentary capture stops the flow. In eternal motion, everything transforms or moves out of place, and is not permanent. A photograph becomes seemingly eternal. The photographs in archives become narratives after time. The exhibition “The sea illuminates ...” is a story about the author being by the sea. There are photos from when the author lived by the sea in Liepāja and often wandered along the coast of Kurzeme, as well as now, in 2021. People are captured in black and white pho- tographs: once-interviewed poet, writer, artist, friends, moments with loved ones. These are events and symbols where the sea has been present, where it austerely illuminates the nature of the rhythm of time, our longing for peace, silence, light, expanse, and freedom. The sea tells us about meetings, the habits of our society, consuming and disposing. But the sea continues to exist…

Kristaps Vanadziņš trio consists of some of the brightest representa- tives of jazz music in Latvia today - composer and pianist Kristaps Vanadziņš, percussionist Rūdolfs Dankfelds and double bassist Jānis Rubiks. The three fundamental cornerstones of the philosophy and the basis for the ensemble’s individuality and idea: interplay, com position, creation. The trio is characterized by a clear and nuanced sound, alternating with traditional playing techniques and New World winds (rubato, academic and Scandinavian music). The music is influenced by both Creole and African, voodoo – combined with European Impressionism, Scandinavian and musicians’ own origins and traditional music. Kristaps Vanadziņš says: “About 70 percent of the concert repertoire will be my own music, which we have recorded on a vinyl record. We will also play classics - Bernstein melodies, John Coltrane compo- sitions, and Edward Elgar’s composition “Land of Hope and Glory”.

The activity of photo clubs and studios in Latvia began in 1962 with the establishment of the Photo Club. Photo studios were the places where strong and creative personalities met, certain aesthetic criteria emerged, in- formation and views were exchanged, and the creative tension prevailed.

Regular exhibitions raised awareness of photography as an art work. Photo thoughts” of “Islands Liberte Una studios and photo clubs in Latvia maintain these traditions still today. To highlight the identity of the Biennale “Marīna 2021” “Me, and the sea”, Jūrmala photo studio “Aspazija” organizes an ambitious exhibition in three venues. 10/07–29/08 Opening: 10/07 at 4PM

Since 2018, the workshop of Valdis Bušs (1924–2014) is available to visitors on the 2nd floor of the Bulduri Exhibition House, where the outstanding master of Latvian painting worked from 1984 to 2014. Artist’s work is characterized by bright, saturated colors, energetic strokes, and decorativeness. Although he lived in Jūrmala for a long time, he rarely painted the sea. Valdis Bušs’ landscapes often show rivers, lakes, but only a few depict the sea. Probably, the wide horizon of the seascape, the calm rhythm of the horizontal lines see- med too calm for the artist. In his landscapes Valdis Bušs has arranged the objects and colour fields in dynamic compositions. The horizon line in his landscapes rarely is straight – usually it’s slightly curved, complemented by some vertical element. The exhibition features works by Valdis Bušs from the collections of the Jūrmala City Museum, artist’s family, and the ArtPlatz gallery.

10/07–29/08 Opening: 10/07 at 7PM

In the chaos and unpredictability of the modern world created by humanity, our relationship with nature is marked as the most important and valuable. In today’s reality, when borders have a new meaning, we take a closer look at what is happening right next to us - the environment we live in and see as a safe haven. The exhibition of visual plastic art calls for awareness of what is happening here and now, rather than searching for the truths of the past or striving for the unknown future.. The permanent exposition of the Jūrmala Open-Air Museum reveals the stories of local fishing, the thoroughness of the industry and trade, but at the same time it gives artists impulses for present interpretations. 11/07 at 3PM

The high value of the artistic performance of painter Jānis Weiss (b. 1928) is certified by artworks in museum and private collections. Colleagues and viewers of numerous exhibitions have praised the presence of the artist’s creative signature in the Latvian painting community. It’s certain to say that the artist has been painting for more than sixty years, probably even seventy. And yet: this striking catalog of works is his first. The extensive collection of images compiled in the catalog reflects the painter’s creative signature at different stages of life. Additionally, the catalog includes the text of an interview, allowing you to look into the artist’s personality. “Pine trees. Water. Air. They inspire me. You could also say that they energize me. It may sound general, but it really is true.” The catalog has been published with the support of Jūrmala City Council and Jūrmala History and Art Society. Compilation and text by Ieva Grantiņa. Design and layout by Līga Lastovska.
