3 PARISH MATTERS A round-up of the latest news and events from the Town Hall, Parish departments and our associated clubs and organisations.

St Helier Allotments Situated in Ruette Pinel, located in the field to the east of Surville Cemetery, the allotments have been a great success, with 33 of them growing a huge range of plants and vegetables. An area to the north of this location is now marked out and ready for a further 28 new allotment holders, and these are now being distributed to those on St Helier’s waiting list. Whilst this gives an improvement on the call for more allotments it still does not satisfy the current waiting list, and the search for more locations within the Parish continues. We are currently looking at an additional site and hopefully, if all goes well, we’ll have more news later in the year.

10 CONSTABLE’S Comment NOT THAT AGAIN! ’m afraid so. The subject of States’ reform has already what it means in practice been raised during Question Time in the States, with one is that in Jersey the amount of ISt Helier Deputy pointing out that if the Council of representation you have – your influence over your Ministers’ avowed intention of concentrating most new government – and the amount of attention you can expect housing development in St Helier is realised, the position of from your States’ Members, depends on where you live. St Helier’s voters will become even more unfair than it is at It has a particularly important effect when it comes to key present. Our Parish is already under-represented in the votes in the States whose outcome affects the lives of States, and increasing the number of electors in St Helier St Helier residents, such as whether the States should pay can only make that position worse. But does it matter? For rates. Perhaps Estate Agents should state, alongside ‘quiet many Islanders, the preservation of the ‘Parish System’ in its country location’, that the owners of a particular property current form means that every parish Constable must have being offered for sale will enjoy more political power than a seat in the States, even though that makes it impossible if they buy a house in town! Joking aside, this is surely an to achieve voter equity. This is presumably why the unacceptable situation for an island which wants to referendum last October on ‘keeping the Constables in the continue to develop its international reputation, and it needs States’ was won by the ‘B campaign’. (St Helier supported to be rectified soon. the ‘A campaign’, albeit by the slimmest of margins.) Equality of votes may not sound important as a concept, but Constable Simon Crowcroft

11 Leo Mansell of The Mansell Collection added, “'The Fuel’ is second to none in Jersey. It has been mine, and my father Nigel's, dream to create a very modern forecourt, with a Formula 1 style ‘THE FUEL’ service area behind it. We are very proud of what has been achieved.” The service area will house part of the Full Service Centre, which is also part of the Mansell group of companies, providing Jersey’s latest and after-sales care not only for Mitsubishi owners but drivers of all makes of vehicle. ‘The Fuel’ re-opened just before Christmas and an official newest forecourt launch was held towards the end of January, for customers of RUBiS and The Mansell Collection. At the launch a competition was announced offering RUBiS card holders the chance to win £100 worth of fuel each month, whenever they fill up with 30 popular petrol forecourt and service station has reopened litres or more of petrol at ‘The Fuel’. RUBiS has been supplying products 8pm on Saturdays and 9am to 5pm on Sundays. through the forecourt for many years. A great deal of thought and planning has gone into the refurbishment of the garage, including installing state-of-the-art pumps and new storage tanks beneath the forecourt with the project team overcoming significant engineering challenges. The completed petrol station has been designed to meet the very latest national and local guidelines, which have been drawn up in consultation with petrol station operators across the UK. As the newest petrol station to open in Jersey, ‘The Fuel’ therefore benefits from national expertise as well as abiding by local regulations. Nick Crolla, Head of Sales & Marketing at Fuel Supplies CI Limited said, 'The Fuel’ has been completely transformed from how it was before. It has always been an extremely well run and popular service station, but the redesign of the forecourt will give customers a much better experience when they stop off to top up. 20 THEATRE REVIEW Dance Fusion at the Jersey Arts Centre

By Dani Noble-Devenney

Emma Jane’s dance school’s annual show of talent and hard work had entertainment for all. There was a range of styles showcased, from ballet and tap to street and modern. Of course, the cheerleading group, Jersey Rockettes, performed too. “I’m excited and a tad nervous!” said cheerleader Hannah Mundy, just one day before opening night. “The older girls who do street dance are really good, and there are some cute little ballet dancers too.” Indeed, all routines were impressive. The older girls who have danced for years not only pulled off the fastest paced, most mind bogglingly brilliant routines, but also looked great doing it. I find that you can tell whether a performance is of a high calibre or not by how much you want to join in, and I really, really did! As for the younger dancers, for any toe out of line or any turn that went the wrong way (honestly, there weren’t many!) their smiling faces and snazzy costumes more than made up for it. What I loved was the range: the ages of the performers, the styles, and the music varied significantly from routine to routine. Towards the end, there were some more spooky numbers, based around witches and one dance was called have always found the opening night of any show captivating ‘The Plague’. They were of an especially high standard and these and Dance Fusion was no different. The performances are dances stood out the most as the mood of the performances was Ifresh, full of anticipation fuelled by the mixture of the so sinister. performers’ nerves and excitement. The families and friends were Dance Fusion certainly lived up to its name. The fusion of equally anticipant, discussing costumes and the effort their so many styles meant that there was something for everyone children had put into their routine. That’s what I love about and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Four performances over three days Jersey – everyone says hello and it really creates a community meant it may have been difficult to make time to go for some, atmosphere. but I would fully recommend it for next year!
