Lenten Regulations

Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent.

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one‘s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for

Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

But, was it, as some have judged it, “a tendency towards unnecessary elaboration”? The old St. Andrew Daily Missal (1950) describes the Pre-Lenten season as Sometime in a reflective prologue: December, I received a It serves as a time of transition during which the soul passes package from from Christmas joys to Lenten sobriety . . . It is recognizing lasting connections with the eternal. Clear Creek Abbey is an American offshoot of Fontgom- bault Abbey in France. Both Abbeys celebrate the Ex- -Fr. Luczak traordinary Form of the Roman Rite. It became obvious, as I turned the pages of the calendar, that the ordo of feasts was taken from the Latin Missal of 1962. The calendar was a vivid reminder that, thanks to wise provi- sion of Pope Benedict XVI, Catholics can experience the continuity of historic and contemporary liturgies.

The Clear Creek Abbey Calendar tells me that the Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time is also Quinquagesima Sun- day. It may seem odd that, for centuries, the Catholic Church observed a Pre-Lenten period without the Gloria and Alleluia and in purple vestments. Beginning with Septuagesima, then Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima, the faithful did a “countdown” of days to Easter . . . Sev- enty, Sixty, Fifty and finally Forty Days. In many places Lent had been more than forty days. In some places, it had been a full eight weeks!

In the Babylon of our earthly life, we sit by the streams, weeping as we remember Sion.

The SIJ Parish Pastoral Council October meeƟng was held on Thursday 1-22. The following agenda items were discussed. • We welcomed Father Mario to our Parish Pastoral Council Meeng and are looking for- ward to working with him. He noted the welcoming community and is appreciave of Father Luczak’s mentoring. • A discussion was held around how we can encourage involvement in the many organi- zaons and acvies which SIJ has to offer. We realize that due to changing mes it is our challenge to make these organizaons relevant to the parish. • The current Mission statement will be revisited to simplify while sll capturing the core philosophies of our Parish. Also, we are reaching out to parishioners on what makes SIJ special and how we can beer serve the community. • Archbishop Cupich asked Parish Pastoral Councils to consider “If I were to aend the next Synod of Bish- ops in October, 2015, what feedback would you want me to provide?" The Archbishop wants to know the more pressing issues out of the list in the The VocaƟon and Mission of the Family in the Church and Con- temporary World from the Synod of Bishops in 2014. Some of the topics in this are in regards to single parent families, divorce/annulment process, LGBT community and youth.
