THE BENEDICTINE FOUNDATIONS IN XISHAN AND CHENGDU, 1929-1952 Fr. Luke Dysinger, OSB Mission and Monasticism, Studia Anselmiana 158, Analecta Monastica 13, (Sant’ Anselmo, Rome; EOS Verlag, Germany, 2013), pp. 185-195. The story of the Benedictines of Szechwan Province during the first half of the Twentieth Century can be divided into three epochs or phases encompassing two geographic locations. The three phases correspond to the first three superiors of the monastery, each of whom possessed a unique vision of how Benedictine monasticism could best serve the needs of the Catholic Church in China. The two geographic locations are: Xishan, near Shunqing, where the community was first established in 1929; and Chengdu, the capital of Szechwan Province where in 1942 the monks were compelled by the vicissitudes World War II to seek refuge 1: CONTEMPLATIVE ASPIRATIONS 1927-1933: Xihan, Prior Jehan Joliet In 1926 Dom Jehan Joliet, a monk of the Abbey of Solesmes, and Dom Pie de Cocqueau of the Abbey of St. André (now know as SintAndries, Zevenkerken), departed the port of Marseilles for Beijing. They were to establish a new monastic foundation that would be a canonical dependency of St. André.1 The Benedictine Abbey of St. André had been designated at its inception as a “Monastery for the Missions”. Since 1898 the community had been committed to monastic missionary work in Brazil by its founder, Abbot Gerard Van Caloen; and in 1910 his successor, Theodore Neve, pledged the community to work in Africa by accepting the Apostolic Prefecture of Katanga in the Congo. 1040 NORTHERN WEST VIRGINIA PANHANDLE now resides at Rayland, Ohio. Doctor Caldwell was a Democrat, a member of the Presbyterian Church and Masonic Lodge. To Dr. John L. and Anna (Reddy) Caldwell two children were born: Alice, married Doctor Hitchcock, lives in Ohio; and Dr. John R., the sub- ject of this sketch. Dr. John R. Caldwell received his early schooling in the public schools of Rayland, Ohio, and Martins Ferry, Ohio. He then attended Ohio Northern College, from which he was graduated in 1907. He then studied medicine and surgery at Ohio Medical College, now Ohio State University, and received his degree. He was located in practice at Rayland, Ohio, until 1917, when he volunteered for service in the World war and was sent to France as a captain in the Medical Corps, One Hundred and Thirty-sixth Machine Gun Battalion. He was discharged at Camp Sherman, Ohio, June 29, 1919, and imme- diately engaged in practice at Steubenville, where he is now well established. He has been in complete charge of Follansbee Brothers Hospital at Follansbee since 1923. In November, 1913, Doctor Caldwell was united in marriage with Miss Emily Schulenberg, born in Kentucky in 1895. They have three daughters: Harriet, born June 15, 1917; and Ellen and Eleanor, twins, born February 5, 1920. Doctor Caldwell is a Democrat, a member of the Presbyterian Church, and belongs to the Masonic and Elks lodges. He is an ex- cellent citizen and progressive in his profession. Very Rev. L. M. Hermanns, V. F., pastor of St. John's Catholic Church of Wellsburg, West Virginia, was born near the world famous city of Cologne, Germany, in 1878. -

6 The Foundations of Feminization EN AND WOMEN, as far as we can tell, participated equally in Christianity until about the thirteenth century. If anything, men were more prominent in the Church not Monly in clerical positions, which were restricted to men, but in religious life, which was open to both men and women. Only around the time of Bernard, Dominic, and Francis did gender differences emerge, and these differences can be seen both in demographics and in the quality of spirituality. Because these changes occurred rapidly and only in the Latin church, innate or quasi- innate differences between the sexes cannot by themselves account for the increase in women’s interest in Christian- ity or the decrease in men’s interest. In fact, the medieval feminization of Christianity followed on three movements in the Church which had just begun at the time: the preaching of a new affective spirituality and bridal mysticism by Bernard of Clairvaux;1 a Frauenbewegung, a kind of women’s movement; and Scholasticism, a school of theology. This concurrence of trends caused the Western church to become a difficult place for men. A monk who renounced the world, he set in motion the Crusades, whose effects are still felt in the geopolitics of Europe and the Middle East. -

Fontgombault had begun to sell the very stones of the Abbey walls (July 2, 1791). But the work of destruction was not yet complete. It was about this time that an impious hand sought to destroy the statue of Mary above the northern door of the church. He positioned a ladder and climbed up in order to carry out the practice, quite common with the revolutionaries, of breaking off the head and members of a piece of art that offended him and the new ideas of those who had no more need of God and His Saints. As he swung his hammer, however, he suddenly lost his balance and fell off the ladder, hurting himself mortally when he hit the ground far below. As he lay dying, the poor man regretted in an instant the evil deed he had done and begged The Story of Our Lady of a Happy Death God, through the intercession of the Virgin Mother of God whom he had so gravely offended, to forgive him. Such was his change of heart, his conversion at the moment of death, that the Notre Dame du Bien Mourir witnesses recognized in the event a special grace from heaven. I am told that this stone fell and lay prone for some time; but that within the last year or two it was replaced. When my friend, Rev. J. C. Morris and son of Wynnewood visited it on January 8, 1927, it was standing, though it was weathered considerably from what it was when Mr. Darling set it up in 1870. Page 234 The Sacred Heart Mission, now known as Sacred Heart Abbey, was founded in 1876, by Father or Abbot Isidore Robot, of the Order of St. Benedict. Father Robot was a native of France, born in Burgundy, July 17, 1837. His parents were well to do farmers, who gave him the benefit of excellent educational advantages. He was an accomplished writer in the French language and was possessed of a fair knowledge of music, especially of the plain chants and other sacred music of the Catholic Church. He was ordained to the priesthood of the Catholic Church, April 17, 1862. He served for one year as vicar general of the little diocese of Monaco. During the Franco-Prussian War, in 1870, he served as a chaplain in the French Army. In 1872, Father Robot answered the call of the Bishop of New Orleans for missionaries. He landed in the United States, January 28, 1873, and was assigned to a field of labor among the French and Creole French people of Louisiana, where he rendered faithful and effective service for several years. -

McGuinness (1945-1957), Bishop Victor J. Reed (1958-1971), Archbishop John R. Quinn (1972-1977), Archbishop Charles A. Salatka (1977-1993), and Archbishop Eusebius J. Beltran (1993-present); and WHEREAS, more information is available in the book “Roman and Oklahoman: A Centennial History of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City”. A Heritage Room has been established at the Catholic Pastoral Center in Oklahoma City featuring artifacts reflecting the history of the Church; and WHEREAS, a Mass to observe the centennial of the founding of the Diocese of Oklahoma (1905-2005) was celebrated on August 14, 2005, at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
