The weekly newsletter for The Junior King’s School, 16 March 2018

From the Head We love to celebrate all the many and varying achievements of our pupils at assembly. I am delighted that Oleg and Toby were awarded first and second place (respectively) in the South East fencing championships last weekend. Both boys will now go on to represent the South East region at the British Youth Championships. Both boys showed excellent sportsmanship and support for each other throughout the competition, they were excellent ambassadors for our school and this is a superb achievement for them. We had very successful Junior King’s Academic and Governors’ Meetings this week, followed by the full Governing Board meeting on Thursday in London, which gave me the opportunity to provide the Governors with a full update on all the work and developments at Junior King’s. Maths winners This week we have a number of trips Jerry, 8M & George, 8L joined with two Year 9 boys from the King’s School to take part happening, including Year 1 to the Old in the UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) Team Maths Challenge. Synagogue, Year 3 to the British Museum and Year 6 who have headed A full report can be found on page 3 for France for the weekend. We wish them Bon Voyage! From the Piste Some of our Year 7 and 8 pupils attended the King’s Exhibition On the 10th of March, Oleg, 7SK, made his individual debut for the school and Toby, yesterday, showcasing the best of 7TU, his second appearance for the school as they competed in the U12 Age group of Design Technology. We look forward the BYC (British Youth Championships) qualifying event, which also doubles as the South East Region Championships. Continued on page 2 We look forward to welcoming new families to Junior King’s tomorrow for our Forest School Open Morning, and hope that the threat of snow and freezing temperatures does not become a reality. The King’s Choral Society will be performing Duruflé’s Requiem this Saturday 17th at 8pm in the Shirley Hall at King’s and tickets are available for Junior King’s families. I hope to see some of you there tomorrow night. With one week to go until the end of term, there is much going on next week, from the music ensembles concert and the Snow Queen play to swimming galas and Easter-themed fun. I hope to see as many parents at these events as can make it.

In fact, it’s brought us closer together because of the excellent lay-out of staff and pupils’ accommodation.” Inevitably there is still a little work to complete before the transition is entirely complete, but every effort has been made to settle the pupils readily, with Mrs Ladd and Matron Mrs Emma Jones even organising a personalised Mitchinson’s mug for every one of the 60 House members, including one for a pupil who only joined the school at half- Above: The Milner Court Orchestra playing at last years’ Ensembles Concert. term! On an unexpected and glorious spring morning this week, Hazels and Willows children took their Maths investigation outside. We were looking at capacity. We measured using a variety of vessels, including measuring spoons, bottles, boxes, cups, jugs, tubs and buckets. We looked at two different containers, which were completely different shapes, but discovered they held exactly the same amount of liquid. We estimated how many times we would need to fill and empty a smaller container into a bigger container, then counted each time. The number often surprised us: sometimes many more and sometimes quite a few less!

Eggs are our theme for this week in the Nursery. We learned the nursery rhyme about Humpty Dumpty and made our own Humptys, which you can see sitting on our classroom wall. We played with chicks and eggs and made colourful paper nests for them. Continuing on the theme, Edwyn made eggs in an egg box before mixing them together to make us all a huge stack of pancakes! Yummy!
