Neotrance and the Psychedelic Festival GRAHAM ST JOHN UNIVERSITY OF REGINA, UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND Abstract !is article explores the religio-spiritual characteristics of psytrance (psychedelic trance), attending speci"cally to the characteristics of what I call neotrance apparent within the contemporary trance event, the countercultural inheritance of the “tribal” psytrance festival, and the dramatizing of participants’ “ultimate concerns” within the festival framework. An exploration of the psychedelic festival offers insights on ecstatic (self- transcendent), performative (self-expressive) and re!exive (conscious alternative) trajectories within psytrance music culture. I address this dynamic with reference to Portugal’s Boom Festival. • Customer Satisfaction at Summer Sound Festival 2015: Evaluating Festival Quality
Customer satisfaction at Summer Sound Festival 2015: Evaluating festival quality Linda Hannonen and Noora Väänänen Bachelor’s Thesis Degree Programme in Experience and Wellness Management November 2015 Abstract 23.11.2015 Author(s) Linda Hannonen and Noora Väänänen Degree programme Experience and Wellness Management Report/thesis title Number of pages Customer satisfaction at Summer Sound Festival 2015: Evaluating and appendix pages festival quality 47 + 22 The thesis was commissioned by an event production company Events 365 Oy. The com- pany focuses on electronic dance music events including the Summer Sound Festival. The Summer Sound festival is a three day EDM festival held at the Helsinki Exhibition and Con- vention Centre. The commissioner will receive the final report for future developments. The objective of this research based thesis is to evaluate the festival quality at Summer Sound Festival 2015 through a customer satisfaction research. The purpose is to under- stand the festivalgoers level of satisfaction based on the perceived quality of the festival quality factors. The literature review introduces theories about customer satisfaction, festivals, festival management and festival quality. The framework of the research is based on the theory of six festival quality factors (program, staff, ancillary services, facilities, convenience and comfort amenities) by Chen, Lee and Lin (2012). By the commissioner's request three fes- tival quality factors (marketing, availability of information and entertainment) were added to the research. Altogether there were nine festival quality factors. The research was conducted using a qualitative research approach. The research meth- ods were a focus group discussion and personal interviews. Ten respondents participated in both parts of the research.

  • Multimodal Performance Approaches in Electronic Music
Multimodal Performance Approaches in Electronic Music Ben Eyes MA by Research University of York Music January 2015 Abstract Within this portfolio are three pieces which explore the use of video, improvisation and noise in the performance and production of electronic music. The pieces are presented as both fixed media and videos of performances. Also included is preliminary research in the form of two smaller research projects. Video has been used in various forms either as a stimulus to improvisation and composition, as an input for sound control, or more traditionally, as an accompaniment to a composition. The use of improvisation both in the composition and performance of the pieces was also investigated. Noise was used in the composition of the pieces, recorded from field recordings, performed by live instrumentalists or generated by synthesisers. Noise is an important theme in the work and is used to bind sounds together, to create tension and release and to provide a contrast to the more traditional melodic and rhythmic structures. This research endeavors to expand the idea of electronic music performance and explore different approaches to presenting electronic music in a live context. The aim being to break out of the paradigm of the laptop musician staring at a screen and doing little else whilst performing. For each piece I have explored a different mode of performance. For example in the piece Aberfan (2013) the traditional three piece band line up of guitar, percussion and bass, was mutated, creating instruments from springs, heavily distorting conventional instruments such as double bass and using improvising musicians to accompany a film.

  • Rave Culture and Religion, Edited by Graham St. John.Pdf
Rave Culture and Religion Rave Culture and Religion explores the role of the technocultural rave in the spiritual life of contemporary youth. Documenting the sociocultural and religious parameters of rave and post-rave phenomena at various locations around the globe, scholars of contemporary religion, dance ethnologists, sociologists and other cultural observers unravel this significant youth cultural practice. The collection provides insights on developments in post-traditional religiosity (especially ‘New Age’ and ‘Neo-Paganism’) through studies of rave’s gnostic narratives of ascensionism and re-enchantment, explorations of the embodied spirituality and millennialist predispositions of dance culture, and investigations of transnational digital-art countercultures manifesting at geographic locations as diverse as Goa, India, north-eastern New South Wales, Australia and Nevada’s Burning Man Festival. Contributors examine raving as a new religious or revitalization movement; a powerful locus of sacrifice and transgression; a lived bodily experience; a practice comparable with world entheogenic rituals; and as evidencing a new Orientalism. A range of technospiritual developments are explored, including: • DJ techniques of liminality and the ritual process of the dance floor • techno-primitivism and the sampling of the exotic ‘Other’ • the influence of gospel music and the Baptist church on garage music • psychedelic trance, ecology and millennialism • psychoactive substance use and neural tuning. Rave Culture and Religion will be essential reading for advanced students and academics in the fields of sociology, cultural studies and religious studies. Graham St John is Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland, where he is working on a critical ethnography of the Australian techno-tribal movement, and researching new youth countercultures and unofficial strategies of reconciliation.

Electronic music festival: a Customer Journey Blueprint Hanna-Mari Mykkänen 23 February 2015 Abstract 23rd February 2015 Author(s) Hanna-Mari Mykkänen Degree programme Hotel and restaurant management, HOTRA Report/thesis title Number of pages Electronic music festival: a Customer Journey Blueprint and appendix pages 32 + 16 The subject of this thesis was commissioned to make an ethnographic study about customer experience on an electronic music festival. More closely, the Summer Sound 2014 Festival in Messukeskus Exhibition and Convention Centre, Messukeskus, in Pasila, Helsinki. The festi- val was on 18th to 20th July. The aim of the thesis was to create a Customer Journey Blueprint (CJB) based on the study results. The CJB would map out the most important factors the customer meets during the experience. The scope was on the external factors. Naturally an individual reacts to certain things differently than another one and thus the social and cultural factors are taken into con- sideration in the CJB as well as the personality. An ethnographic approach was used to collect the study data. In other words the study was based on the material of the experience of the researcher, the festival customer. The results were gathered by taking Instagram -photos during the event and adding comments with each image. The experience was also written open; the document is enclosed in this thesis as well as the Instagram -photos. Using mindmapping the most significant themes were pointed out and became the base for the outcome of the thesis: the CJB. It displays in one image the most important themes that surfaced in the gathered material.
