JUNIOR LEAGUE OF ABILENE the Commentator | 1 SUSTAINER SALUTE Mary Whatley Jones By: Nancy Reed

Recently we paid a special visit to Junior League of Abilene Charter Member and Sustainer Emeritus Mary Whatley Jones to interview her for the Commentator Sustainer Salute. Joining us were her daughter, Harriet Jones Bass and dear friend, living a few doors down, Dot Kendrick. To put the title Charter Member into perspective, Mary just turned 95 years old. She was 34 years old, a wife and mother of two girls, in 1948 when a group of 24 Abilene women formed the Abilene Junior Service League (the group later joined Association of Junior Leagues of America in 1956). At the time there were older women active in volunteering in Abilene, but this group believed that there should be a role and place for younger women to be involved. Th e mission of the group appealed to Mary because of her family tradition to help other people and the belief that “if you have the extra time, you can use it wisely helping others who need assistance.” Mary said, “Abilene is big enough (to have needs) and small enough that you can make a diff erence.” When asked about how these ladies organized, Mary responded that this group of young women were capable and knew they could take on projects in the community — they didn’t know the world was so big or that they could fail. Mary said that then it was a less busy time and Th e experience was satisfying because Abilene is full acknowledges that it is increasingly diffi cult for women of good will, and they felt there was a need for this group to fi nd time to volunteer now. She still believes though to organize and serve. that volunteering in the community is important — She remembered that early meetings sometimes took especially our community. As then, Abilene still needs place at the Abilene Women’s Club and sometimes even projects to involve women; women need to be familiar in vacant rental houses she and her husband, Morgan and know about Abilene; and Abilene needs to connect Jones owned, near Butternut and on Leggett. Th e projects have always focused on the needs of Volunteering has been an integral part of Mary’s life, children and families. In the 1940’s the group determined and her work has touched Abilene through 8 decades that two great needs were assisting handicapped children of service in the Junior League of Abilene, Girl Scouts, and forming a central agency to organize and train and Alliance for Women and Children (formerly the volunteers. Th ese projects later would become the West Y.W.C.A.). She also sees there is still more work to be Texas Center for Rehabilitative Services and the R.S.V.P. done and encourages the ladies in Junior League to program. Mary also remembers working on the League’s fi rst cookbook, “Th e Party Cookbook.”
