Special thanks also to those who send in items for this newsletter which delight the families to read about the boys’ successes. 17 October SHCMS Gold 8/29 were defeated by St Peters 3/123 St Peters won the toss and sent us in on a wet pitch. The boys battled hard against some very sound bowling. Few runs came from the bat with top scorers being Lachlan (6) and Hayden (4). Only defending a small target, St Peters came out hitting, however both Harvey (2) and Ethan (1) were able to pick up some late wickets. 24 October SHCMS Blue 9/94 defeated Scotch 10/43 Scotch won the toss and decided to bowl on a green and damp pitch. Our team struggled early in their innings but a great partnership between Davis and Bunworth managed to steady the ship. In the field SHCMS performed brilliantly to bowl Scotch out for 43. The hearts boys were positive and encouraged each other throughout their innings. Bunworth took a brilliant catch of Jessep’s bowling to give him his first ever cricket wicket. Great catch also by Davis. Best batsman, Bunworth (21), best bowler Vanzetta (2/4). SHCMS Gold all out 51 were defeated by St Johns 6/110 Top scorers were Hayden and Harvey (6 each); wickets were taken by Ethan (2), Harvey, Keegan & Jack Whelan (1 each). 7 November SHCMS Blue 8/124 defeated SHCMS Red 9/86 This was a good competitive game played in the right spirit between these two SHCMS teams. Best Blue batsman were Fraser (20), Bennett (18) and Bunworth (18 n.o.). Best Blue bowlers were Bunworth (3/1), Fraser (2/13) and Bruijn (1/5). Man of the match was A.Fraser. SHCMS Gold all out 49 were defeated by St Andrews 7/177 Top scorers: Zac (9), Lachlan and Ethan (7 each). Wickets: Lucas and Jak (2 each), Harvey, Jack and Zac (1 each). 14 November SHCMS Blue 6/14 defeated SHCMS Green 8/67 Best batsmen for Blue were Murphy (33) and Fraser (23 n.o.). Best bowler for Blue was Faulkner (2/6). SHCMS Gold 5/85 were defeated by Prince Alfred College 7/104 Top scorers: Hayden (16), Harvey and Terrance (9 each) and Lachlan M (7). Wickets: Haydn (2), Lachlan N, Lachlan M, Lucas and Ben (1 each). One run out. The boys have shown continuous improvement over the past 4 matches. This was the best performance with the bat; the bowling and fielding is lifting each week. SHCMS Purple 4/96 lost to St Andrews 10/132 Fantastic effort up against a well-drilled and balanced team. This was the first time St Andrews had been bowled out this season and their previous two scores were 270 and 217. Luke D led a great bowling effort with 4 wickets and a catch and was well-supported across the board. The batting was led by the recruit of the season, Carter N, and ably supported by Seby in his last game for us and by Aidan with a nice double figure not out. This was our best effort of the season to date and shows how far we have come as a team. Well played, you can all be very proud of your efforts. 21 November SHCMS Gold 7/40 were defeated by St Ignatius 4/109 Top scorer: Dylan (6), Lachlan M, John B and Jackson (3 each). Yvette Zaric Swimming The Year 6/7 swim team finished off the year strongly with a 4th place in the last carnival held at Immanuel College. • Sandy Tribute
FOREWORD As I write this foreword in humble tribute to my very great friend, Sandy, it is nearly midsummer 2010 and almost a year has passed since, all of a sudden, he was called away from us during a cricket match at Ditchling. How fitting it is that Desmond Devitt, a fine Martlet colleague, should be the inspiration behind this booklet. It gives Sandy’s friends the chance to capture the essence of his life and remind us of the fullness of his spirit which grabbed so many of us in different ways. Sandy would probably not believe me if I told him he was one of my sporting heroes. But he was, he really was. You see, I envied his great love of cricket and football and rugby. I envied him for never having been a professional, which left enthusiasm and joy still intact. He loved these games, and especially cricket which he played with great skill too. Sandy never wanted it to rain. Every day he looked forward to playing. It was a serious affair with lunch and tea always important too. But most important to Sandy were the people he was playing with and against. They really made his day and the game worth playing. If you knew Sandy well, none of this will come as a surprise, for he was a giver at heart as opposed to a taker. He was generous and wanted everyone to enjoy each day as much as him. He wasn’t one to grab the first place in the queue nor the best seat in the house.
