The Club Cricket Conference have presented a Bench to Wycombe House CC in memory of Vivienne Hoggarth and in recognition to her lifelong commitment to the game of cricket, manifested in particular by her loyalty to Wycombe House CC as our Scorer for many years, as well as CCC and MCC Women. The club welcomed Angus Fraser MBE Director Cricket Middlesex County CC together with Gulfraz Riaz, Club Cricket Conference to present the Bench from CCC in memory of Vivienne. This was accepted on behalf of the Club by Peter Baker, President Wycombe House Cricket Tennis & Social Club. Presentation was made during our annual game v Old Isleworthians CC followed by a buffet for our guests and members. ANGUS FRASER MBE CAME ALONG TO WHCC ON SUNDAY TO MAKE A FORMAL PRESENTATION IN MEMORY OF VIVIAN HOGGARTH. Angus is Director of Cricket at Middlesex County Cricket Club, Chief Selector for the England Cricket Team, and previously was an England and Middlesex fast bowler. Please have a read of Denis’ Testimonial below… Vivienne Hoggarth It is difficult to be precise about Vivienne, as the people that knew her well have either moved on, died or have memory lapses. I believe Vivienne joined Wycombe House as a scorer in late 1970’s, coming from Harrow Town CC. My understanding is that she learnt her scoring at Harrow Town but fell out with them (I don't know when but probably in the late 70s) She first came to Wycombe House as scorer for the Club Cricket Conference when we managed to get a game against them to commemorate the opening of our new clubhouse in 1980. Unfortunately (or fortunately for Wycombe House) there was a huge thunderstorm that day and the game was washed out without a ball being bowled. That meant that Vivienne was entertained in the clubhouse, not least by being serenaded by Mick McGuire with his guitar, and she enjoyed herself so much, she was persuaded to come and score for us. Perhaps we were a bit nearer to Bromley (not much) where she lived. The Club had also met her before at Lords, where she was a scorer for many years with The Cross Arrows, whom we played on a regular basis and still do. She also scored in Representative Games as well as The Club Cricket Conference. One of her most famous appointments was as scorer for the first MCC Women’s match versus a Surrey Under 21 side in May 1999, photo attached, which followed the change of rules to allow women members into MCC. Later she became our Press Secretary and Fixture Secretary, in which roles she of course came into contact with numerous Clubs. She was of course a superb scorer and fixture secretary, the like of which we will not see again. Why she chose Wycombe House CC for her undoubted talents is a mystery, considering where she lived, but of course she thoroughly enjoyed her time at The Club, scoring on both Saturday’s, Sunday’s and occasional mid-week games. Vivienne was a very private person, who appeared to have few relatives or family. Wycombe House was her family. The whole cricket fraternity was her family. She was a very loyal servant to The Club and cricket in general. I believe she was also an Officer in the 1987 League. In the 2004 season, Vivienne became unwell after a fall and was unable to drive, so both factors prevented her from continuing at Wycombe House. She still maintained contact of course and was very helpful with organizing fixtures and our fixture card. We could not find a replacement for seasons 2005 & 2006 and it was with some surprise that Russell Grant, Astrologer, Middlesex Fanatic, and now Dancer Extraordinaire volunteered to be our Fixture Secretary for one season, despite being unwell himself. Perhaps that was in some way a tribute to Vivienne, whom he knew well. Over recent years we lost contact with Vivienne, who preferred her own privacy during her illness, which gradually incapacitated her. She was an Honorary Life Vice President of the Club up to her death in August 2011. Her funeral was held on 14 October 2011 at Golders Green Crematorium and attended by Vinny Codrington, Chief Executive, Middlesex CCC, M ichael Welch, Chief Executive The Club Cricket Conference, Wycombe House members and friends. I was asked to say a few words which were really quite inadequate considering her lifelong commitment to cricket and after we all retired to a local hostelry to d rink her health and remember her life. I am please to say that Vinny produced his cheque book for the occasion. We must give a special mention to the Third Team Captain Vasi and all of his players for winning the league and in the attacking style they did it as well as under his first year of his captaincy! For those of you who do not know Vasi was asked to captain the 3’s by the 1st Team Captain Alex after playing with him the previous season in the promotion winning 1st Team and seeing what great potential he had. Vasi wanted continue playing at the highest standard in the first team but realised this would be the best move for the club and to support some of the younger players in our third team. And what a great job he has done! The third team players have gone all out for a winning mentality in every single game they played in and they ended up winning 10 out of the 15 matches played which is a massive feat! The team was lead by some attacking opening bowling from the skipper himself & Yahya with the back up of the ever reliable Sachin and the spin of Haq, Sehmbi, Guarav & Lotia too! Vasi led from the front and ended up leading run scorer but he was supported by a stable batting line up at the top of the order. A great season for the likes of Jankea, Haq, Ash Vyas & AB at the start of the season before his promotion to the higher teams. But overall it was an outstanding team effort with amazing spirit shown every Saturday afternoon and it was great to see as the guys were always coming back huge smiles on their faces! Next season will be a test for the guys playing in the Middlesex County League, playing against some very good teams at some lovely grounds but it is a challenge to step up to not shy away from guys and you deserve to be there!!!
