PRESS STATEMENT - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 4, 2021

Three Spring Calves Arrive at the One of Anchorage’s most popular family venues is seeing a busy orphan season.

The Alaska Zoo recently received three moose calves in coordination with Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologists, and the Kenai Moose Research Center. Two male calves arrived on June 1st from the Kenai Moose Research Center, an Alaska Department of Fish and Game research facility north of Sterling, AK. The research center has been operational since 1968 and conducts pioneering studies on moose-habitat relationships, evaluation of moose physical condition, nutritional ecology and behavior. The male calves brought to the zoo by biologists were from a hand-raised female moose at the facility. The calves are doing great and may be seen by visitors in the outdoor infirmary yard where they have indoor and outdoor access.

On June 2nd, zoo officials were notified by biologists that a male moose calf was orphaned near Homer, AK after its mother fell from a cliff. He needed immediate care upon arrival and was placed in the indoor infirmary for further veterinary assessments. He is adjusting to feedings and being near our animal care team. We hope to see continued improvement and move him soon to live with the first two calves with outdoor access. All three of the calves have placements at outside of Alaska as the Alaska Zoo already has two adult bull moose in residence. The calves will be cared for by zoo staff until they are deemed ready to travel to receiving facilities.

“You can help us cover the extra care expenses for the two black bear cubs, one porcupette (baby porcupine) and three moose calves we have this season by bidding in our online auction starting June 13th and purchasing tickets to our annual fundraiser Walk on the Wild Side. This is a busy and expensive wildlife care season. We are below our goals for this fundraiser, and we need your support,” Executive Director Pat Lampi https://www.alaskazoo.org/walk-on-the-wild-side-zoo-fundraiser
