Intolerant populations may become locally extinct, whereas other species respond posi- tively to the creation of new habitat or resource conditions. Local extinction represents a challenge for conservation biologists. On the other hand, out- breaks of herbivorous species often are triggered by abundant or stressed hosts and relaxation of predation following disturbances. These insect re- sponses can cause further changes in ecosystem conditions and predispose communities to future disturbances. Improved understanding of insect re- sponses to disturbance will improve prediction of population and community dynamics, as well as ecosystem and global changes. -

Among the best-studied insects that are frequently exposed to ßooding are tiger beetle (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) larvae. In previous studies with a limited number of species, a correlation was found between habitat and hypoxia tolerance. In the current study, we examined hypoxia tolerance among third instars of six Cicindela species that vary in habitat association; we also tested adult survival of these species. -

Riverlake Drive Mequon, Wisconsin 53092 ABSTRACT One-hundred eighty-four species in 70 genera of geadephagan beetles (183 carabids and one rhysodid) were documented during a nine-year field survey of a national park site (George Washington Memorial Parkway) that spans parts of Fairfax and Arlington counties and the City of Alexandria in Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The capture of Elaphropus quadrisignatus (Duftschmid) represents the second record for the New World. Seven species, E. quadrisignatus, Harpalus rubripes (Duftschmid), Microlestes pusio (LeConte), Platynus opaculus LeConte, Pterostichus permundus (Say), P. sculptus LeConte, and Scarites vicinus Chaudoir are documented for the first time from the Commonwealth. Seven species, Anisodactylus dulcicollis (LaFerté-Sénectère), Elaphropus anceps (LeConte), E. saturatus (Casey), Oodes americanus Dejean, P. permundus, S. vicinus, and Tachys potomaca (Erwin) are documented for the first time from the District of Columbia. The study increases the number of geadephagan beetles known from the Potomac River Gorge to 255 species and the number from Virginia to 543 taxa. Hand picking and Malaise traps proved to be the most successful capture methods of the eight methods employed during the survey. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. -

PUTCHKOV & ERIK ARNDT Zusammenfassung Die Larvalmerkmale der Gattung Megacephala LATREILLE werden beschrieben und ein Larvenbestim mungsschlüssel für 5 der 6 Untergattungen vorgelegt. Larven von Megacephala sind durch die Y-förmig Gularsutur (ein Merkmal aller Megacephalini) und das fehlende Doppelsklerit ventral am Prämentum charakterisiert. Nur die Untergattung Phaeoxantha besitzt einen gezähnelten Clypeus, den wahrscheinlich plesiomorphen Zustand dieses Merkmals im Verwandtschaftskreis. Die Untergattung Tetracha umfaßt mindestens zwei verschiedene Artengruppen, die sich durch ihre Chaetotaxie am Pronotum und Abdomen deutlich unterscheiden. Summary A description of larval characters of the genus Megacephala LATREILLE and a larval key to five of the six subgenera are given. The most characteristic larval characters of Megacephala are the Y-shaped gular suture (known from all Megacephalini) and the lack of an oval double sclerite on the prementum. The anterior margin of the clypeus of the subgenus Phaeoxantha is serrated, which is probably the plesiomor- phic character state. The subgenus Tetracha includes at least two distinct species groups, which are distinguished by the chaetotaxy of the pronotum and abdomen. Introduction Genus Megacephala LATREILLE is one of the distinctive tiger beetle groups in the tribe Megacephalini (see HUBER, 1994 for the detailed history of the nomenclature of this group). About 90 species from 6 subgenera of genus Megacephala are now known (WIESNER, 1992). The classification of this taxon, however, is based on adult characters only. The knowledge of Megacephala larvae is limited.
