    Maria Bamford, standup comedian, actor and star of her own show on Netflix Lady Dynamite Maria Bamford has dealt with depression and other mental illnesses for much of her life. “I am on a cocktail of medications and I have not felt depressed for about four years. But at age nine or ten I started writing in journals that I wanted to die. I would leave them around the house and my mother would read them and ask ‘Honey, are you gay?’” “I never understood when someone would say ‘Come on let’s go do this, it’s going to be fun.’ I would think that this is another set of extremely uncomfortable circumstances that I’m going to have to grit my teeth through.” She was treated for an eating disorder and was put on Prozac. “One of the things I had was agitated depression. I was not only depressed, but I had a tremendous amount of energy while feeling terrible. That’s a dangerous place to be. You have a lot of energy to kill yourself. As a kid I felt that a lot.” Having depression alone can be excruciatingly difficult. When you add other conditions into the mix, it gets excruciating and complicated. Maria had depression and an eating disorder at a young age. But at least, she thought, those are things that people get. People don’t talk about them enough, but they do talk about them. However, she also had something else that scared her to death. “I started feeling obsessive and started having unwanted thoughts about violence.

    Docucharacters: Public Persona as Character in Film, Television, and Fandom Melanie Brooke Piper BA (Hons), University of Queensland A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2017 School of Communication and Arts Abstract Screen characters function to personalise narrative actions for viewers, help us form judgements and understanding of moral points of view, and give us a way to make affective connections to media texts. This is true of both purely fictional characters in film and television narratives, and the real- life characters of the public figures that populate the news cycle. But how does character function when these two realms of fact and fiction merge, when the text of an actual public image is further fleshed out with speculation and fictionalisation in media ranging from Hollywood biopic to erotic fan fiction? Despite the centrality of characters in understanding media texts, there is a small body of scholarly work on fictional characters in screen media, and even less on real people as fictionalised characters. The latter has been touched on in studies of the biopic, historical literary fiction, and historical film, but we also see real people turned into characters in other media forms, such as sketch comedy, fan fiction, and celebrities playing fictional versions of themselves on screen. This thesis proposes the ontological category of “docucharacter” as a means of considering how public and private selves come together through the interpretive work of media producers and audiences across this variety of film, television, and fannish media forms. To define the docucharacter, I draw on celebrity studies approaches to the intertextuality of the public image, Erving Goffman's theories of self-presentation, and Murray Smith’s typology of character engagement.

It is thanks to Catherine’s own sense of style and imagination that Daisy Dukes are now part of the popular vernacular—her character was initially supposed to wear a poodle skirt, but Catherine asked the producers for a shot at creating the character’s wardrobe, with the idea of a more edgy look for an independent character. Catherine’s famous pin-up poster that she styled has outpaced other contemporary beauties and sold over 5 million copies. Catherine is not afraid of adventure and activism; while portraying the lead in African Skies, the first American show filmed in South Africa after Apartheid, she spearheaded the cause of preserving the endangered Black Rhinoceros and testified before U.S. Congress to protect them. She was instrumental in lobbying for the Black Rhino and Tiger Preservation act, which was passed in 1996.
