The research method can be used in conducting empirical studies of consumer behavior. The method combines collected handset-based usage data with survey data, both of which are important in modeling consumer behavior. The process involves a handset- based software module that automatically extracts data on service usage, and transmits this data to centralized servers for the purposes of analysis. The method facilitates empirical research on the mobile Internet and computer like functionalities of new mobile phones. The research method is compared to other methods of empirical mobile service research. On several occasions the value of the defined research method is significant, providing accurate logs of service usage along with location and time stamps. The combination of subjective survey and objective usage data provides new angles in empirical research. The research conducted claims that the handset-based data collection method and associated analysis approaches provide valuable information for the stakeholders of the mobile industry. Results can be used in developing and launching new mobile services. Academic domains for the application of the research method include measurement of service usage, contextual end-user research, modeling of service adoption, and analysis of moderating factors of usage. Regarding the actual use of the method, three key observations are made. First, though the dissertation proves the novelty value of accurately monitoring the behavior of end-users in using device functions, mobile services, and various applications, the limitations of the method need to be carefully considered and only suitable research problems should be studied. In particular, the adverse selection of panelists creates challenges in the generalization of results. Second, in addition to descriptive statistics including ranking of services, contextual statistics of service usage, and application adoption metrics, future research should interpret and explain the results more thoroughly, seeking a deeper understanding of reasons for usage observed. Most importantly, future research should utilize customized surveys and usage data in parallel, as demonstrated in the dissertation. Third, in order to support the scalability of the research method, the panel study process should be modified. The dissertation identifies the key challenges to be solved when replicating the study process in bigger, international studies. Panelists should be provided with other than monetary benefits for participating in a study. The handset-based research method is a new innovation, providing a tool for further research and applications. The early results indicate that the method can be utilized in research problems that have substantial practical relevance in the mobile industry. Menetelmä tarjoaa mahdollisuuden tutkia mobiilitoimialan uusia ilmiöitä, kuten langattoman Internetin yleistymistä ja puhelinten uusia toiminnallisuuksia. Päätelaitepohjaista tutkimusmenetelmää verrataan väitöskirjassa vaihtoehtoisiin kuluttajatutkimusmenetelmiin. Menetelmä tarjoaa lokitietoa kuluttajan käyttäytymisestä yhdessä monipuolisen kontekstitiedon (esim. aika ja paikka) kanssa. Menetelmä mahdollistaa myös interaktiivisen datankeruukanavan erilaisten kyselytutkimusmoduulien avulla. Subjektiivisen kyselytutkimusdatan ja objektiivisen käyttödatan yhdistäminen tarjoaa uusia kuvakulmia kuluttajatutkimukseen. Viisi väitöskirjaan kuuluvaa tutkimuspaperia näyttävät, että päätelaitepohjainen tutkimus yhdistettynä analyysiprosesseihin tarjoaa arvokasta tietoa toimialalle. Tietoa voidaan hyödyntää uusien palveluiden kehityksessä ja kaupallistamisessa, sekä kuluttajan käyttäytymisen mallintamisessa. Akateemisia soveltamisalueita ovat palveluiden käyttöstatistiikan kerääminen, kontekstipohjainen kuluttajatutkimus, palveluiden adoptiotutkimus, sekä kuluttajien käyttötottumusten mallintaminen. Väitöskirja erittelee kolme johtopäätöstä päätelaitepohjaisesta kuluttajatutkimuksesta. Ensimmäiseksi, päätelaitepohjaisen tutkimusmenetelmän rajoitteet täytyy ottaa huomioon, ja ainoastaan soveltuvia tutkimusongelmia kannattaa tutkia. Päätelaitepohjainen tutkimusmenetelmä on tieteellisesti uusi innovaatio, ja se tarjoaa alustan tulevalle akateemiselle tutkimukselle sekä kaupallisille ratkaisuille. Tietyissä tilanteissa tutkimusmenetelmä tarjoaa uuden kuvakulman kuluttajatutkimukseen. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationships between social control patterns and electronic communication infrastructure use. Political, administrative, and computing infrastructure examples are used to provide initial understanding of infrastructure use. Social control models are used to provide insight into employee use of an electronic communication infrastructure. Case data from electronic communication systems is mapped to social control models to illustrate the effect of social control types on electronic communication use. In discussing the role of computing infrastructures, it is important to define infrastructure characteristics being considered. Computing infrastructure refers to the set of human and organizational resources that help make it simpler and faster for skilled people to use computerized systems (Kling, 1993). A computing infrastructure can consist of physical, technological and social characteristics. Physical characteristics can affect the ability to access the system. Technological characteristics involve issues of quality and reliability. Social characteristics address issues of information access and accountability. Physical and technological issues are driven by economic and technical issues, while social issues involve organizational issues.

Just two months later, daily reports of outbreaks—and of waxing and waning infection and mortality rates— continue to heighten anxiety, stir grief, and cast into question the contours of our collective social and economic future. Never in modern history have countries had to ask citizens around the world to stay home, curb travel, and maintain physical distance to preserve the health of families, colleagues, neighbors, and friends. And never have we seen job loss spike so fast, nor the threat of economic distress loom so large. In this unprecedented reality, we are also witnessing the beginnings of a dramatic restructuring of the social and economic order—the emergence of a new era that we view as the “next normal.” Dialogue and debate have only just begun on the shape this next normal will take.

As technology advances, it presents new societal and ethical challenges. The early Internet was devised and implemented in American research units, universities, and telecommunication companies that had vision and interest in cutting-edge research. The Internet then entered into the commercial phase (1984-1989). It was facilitated by the upgrading of back- bone links, the writing of new software programs, and the growing number of interconnected international networks. The author examines the massive expansion of the Internet into a global network during the 1990s when business and personal computers with different operating systems joined the universal network. The instant and growing success of social networking-sites that enable Netusers to share information, photos, private journals, hobbies, and personal as well as commercial interests with networks of mutual friends and colleagues is discussed.
